Official Announcements / Re: Cody's (Internet Citizens) Club Begins!
« Last post by Lashiec on January 11, 2007, 12:51 PM »
Actually, what do you think about using the badge as an icon under the avatar for Club Members?

That's a good idea.

That also goes for dhuser, Lashiec, KenR

Yep, I know. I'm still thinking what should I write about me...

Good idea, mouser. I'll sign up immediately... after finishing the exams in February :(

Why buy xplite when there's the free www.nliteos.com ?

Yep, I know, but, unfortunately, nLite is way different because you can't uninstall or reinstall components after you've got installed Windows. So, for me, is not an option.

OK, the general opinion can be resumed in the following: use it, but with care. I'll follow the advice. Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR v2.00.01 ALPHA PREVIEW Release
« Last post by Lashiec on December 20, 2006, 06:13 AM »
I think I'll wait 'til Monday. At first, I wanted to give you a helping hand in bug testing, but I'm a bit busy at the moment (exams, the project, last-minute Christmas shopping, computer components hunting...)

The 8 ball looks nice, and it'll look nicer at 256x256 (for Vista compliance). Nudone's first suggestion is also good, but I'm not so sure about the second one...

General Software Discussion / The experiences of XPLite customized installations
« Last post by Lashiec on December 20, 2006, 05:59 AM »
I was thinking in buying XPLite to strip my future XP-fueled computer (as it was a car :)) of useless components. But first, I want to know what are your experiences with the usage of this tool (if there's someone who uses this tool...). That is, if you had problems after customizing the installation, such as programs refusing to start due to some obscure missing component, or something along the lines.

Besides this, and this other one is very important, I want to know if any you used XPLite as a cleanup tool prior installing upgrades. For example, you removed Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player before installing SP2, to get a cleaner upgrade as possible. And then, you ran into similar problems as the mentioned above.

I wanted to know if XPLite is worth its price tag, because I've been an user of 98Lite during some time now, but I ran into some problems due to its usage, like the impossibility of reading MHT files with Internet Explorer (due to the lack of Outlook Express) and some programs refusing to start due to runtime problems and some other things.

Fairly interesting

For now, we'll take enthusiastic reviews with a grain of salt... unless it's Zaine Ridling talking about XYplorer or me about Opera ;D

Hey, hey, I'm not in! I was asking about that Visual Paradigm because that's what I'm going to do during Christmas as a project for the high school. I can't really see the utility of a bunch of UML diagrams ;D (at least for this contest)

If you do a "DonationCoder Summer of Code" take on Google's SoC, maybe I'll take that one. With some bit of luck, I'll have a bit more free time in summer than during Christmas

WHOA! My comment disappeared from the blog!

A new review of firewalls could come along... The present one is not exactly comprehensive, and it mostly praises Outpost (no offense here, at the time of the review it was the best option considering all things implicated). And the firewall world suffered a convulsion after th ;D ;De Kerio and Sygate debacle... at that time I thought the only free alternative for the future would be ZoneAlarm, but then Sunbelt Software came forward, and people discovered Comodo and netVeda, and everything went for the best ;D

I'm waiting for the results of the test that Scot Finnie is conducting on his own computers. At some point in the future, maybe I would post some mini-reviews since finally it seems that I'm getting my new computer as a Christmas present... complete with an Internet connection! ;D, so the firewall is going to be a must, and probably I would test all free ones, and maybe some of the paid, like the same Outpost or the full version of ZoneAlarm. I'll keep you informed :D

I answered in your blog, Zaine. Though it could be a more elaborate answer...

So, Carol, Outpost 4 will run wonderful after Outpost 5 gets the release.

Living Room / Lifehacker looking for DonationCoder
« Last post by Lashiec on November 24, 2006, 05:32 AM »
Ok, not the best topic title in the planet, but I'm not inspired right now. Lifehacker wants to know if "Is there a web site somewhere out there where users submit ideas for things to be programmed and good Samaritans code the ones they like in their free time?" defining the very spirit of DonationCoder (at least regarding Coding Snacks). Wise readers point at DonationCoder in the second comment ;D

Living Room / Re: digg requires far too much effort!
« Last post by Lashiec on November 24, 2006, 05:12 AM »
I have only entered Digg a couple of times (not a fan of hype-powered websites), but looking at the front page right now, I can say most of the stories are uninteresting and posted by your average teenagers (being one of them, but anyway ;D). It's more a site posting about curious things than about interesting things, it reminds me of these weird Latin American programs talking about extremely bizarre things (I think there was one on Televisa or something...)

For tech news, I prefer Daily Rotation. Plain simple, with a very basic layout, but very customizable, and excellent to be in sync with daily tech news. And now, you can add your own feeds, as reported by mouser some days ago, with enhances even more the value of the site. By the way, thanks to it, I came to this link feature in CNET news: http://www.usersubmitter.com/. True or not? If it's true, it's yet another "triumph" for the wisdom of the crowds ;)

Nah, thanks to you, for the idea, the programs and the infrastructure that makes possible the existence of this community :). In short:

Pity that you still can't pay your bills... ;D

btw, i just realized, one of the tools used (PEiD) is partly developed by Jibz.

PEiD is another excellent tool, too.

Go for it. Not that I would need it, but it would very useful to those not exactly experts about computing

I think I would choose between Deus EX, Max Payne and my beloved The Longest Journey... I might miss one or two, but I have a somewhat big collection and it's difficult to choose at least three ;)
