LaunchBar Commander / Re: Show sub menu items on mouse over
« Last post by sri on August 22, 2008, 05:03 AM »
Another question: I have set up a hotkey as in the attached screenshot. Is it supposed to bring up the launch menu because at the moment it doesn't do so? I was wondering if it is possible to get the launch menu (the one that shows up when sys tray icon is clicked) at the current cursor position when this hotkey is pressed.

Besides True Launch Bar and LaunchBar Commander, are there any other applications which can display sub folders & files upon mouse over? Let's say my 'My Documents' folder has 10 sub folders (again, some of them have sub content) and 2 files, most of the free s/w (like LaunchOnFly) can't let you simply add 'My Documents' AND show its content dynamically upon a mouse over. You will have to manually add each folder/file that you want to the menu.

TLB implements this best but isn't free.
Virtual Folders

You can also create virtual folders on the True Launch Bar. When you create a virtual folder, you select the folder's content you want to see in the toolbar menu. It can be any folder on your disk or on a local network (Favorites, Programs, Recent, etc.); or you can add file system folders such as Printers, Control Panel, My Computer, Dialup Network or other similar folders. If you right-click on an item in the virtual folder, you can see a full context menu like in the Explorer window, and you can perform any action from this menu (Properties, Open, Delete...).

LBC doesn't yet have a context menu for the menu items.

So, any other software? Ideally I should be able to bring up the launch menu upon a keypress at the current cursor position.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Another FARR similar app - Executor
« Last post by sri on August 20, 2008, 02:42 AM »
I have been using FARR till yesterday. I have switched to Executor now. I feel it is faster and easier to set up (keywords). Of course, the functionality provided by FARR via plugins like GoogleSuggest is not present in Executor. But for now, Executor is okay for me. Anyone else here uses Executor? If so, please check this out.

Is it possible to have a menu's items come up on mouse over as opposed to mouse click?

General Software Discussion / How to extract icon of a folder?
« Last post by sri on August 17, 2008, 10:39 PM »
I found several software that extracts icons from dlls and exes, but none that would extract an icon of a specified folder itself. I want to get the .ico file of a specific folder. Any ideas? I have already looked in %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll and it's not in there.

Is there an add-on similar to AdBlock Plus for IE 7?

Perhaps you already know this: http://www.admuncher.com/

Not free though.

Chandler: What went wrong

Despite some innovations in brings to the category, it has not delivered on the promise. Here's where it fails:

o Whether you're working in the Chandler web app or using a desktop client, you enter to dos, appointments and notes in a single entry field, then add detail. But the devil is in these details, and you will get tired very quickly of the slow interface for entering calendar items.

o While Chandler lets you triage your items into Now, Later and Done buckets, this is rudimentary task management at best and will leave practitioners of David Allen's Getting Things Done wondering where the rest of the application is.

o Chandler's big selling point--seamless Web app/desktop synchronization and backup--works as advertised (although it did not work for me out of the box), but a competitor, the free but commercial Evernote, offers superior features, like picture and sound recording, and Web-based OCR of images stored.

o Chandler organizes your information into collections, but unlike say Google shared calendars, there's no way on the Chandler Hub to discover collections others want to publicize.

An alternative for Firefox users is CustomizeGoogle add-on. After installing the add-on, go to its options and check 'Remove click tracking'.

General Software Discussion / Re: Drop Box lands
« Last post by sri on July 22, 2008, 12:34 PM »
Dropbox is very useful. I use 3 computers (one home laptop, one work laptop, one work desktop) and installed Dropbox on each of them. The beauty of Dropbox is that it works even from behind a corporate proxy since it takes the settings from IE. Here is how I am using it:

PhraseExpress: I installed PhraseExpress on all my 3 computers and set the PhraseExpress data file to that in the Dropbox. So no matter which computer I add a phrase in, the same phrases are available everywhere everytime. So essentially I am getting the functionality of network edition of PhraseExpress w/ just its free version and Dropbox.

RoboForm: I have moved the RoboForm's passcards to a folder in Dropbox and all my sites' login and password info is available on all the 3 machines.

Portable Applications: I also use few portable s/w. I just place them in Dropbox on any computer and they get auto replicated on the other 2 systems. I plan to uninstall some installed programs like IrfanView, Notepad++ and get their USB versions and put them in my Dropbox.

On both Windows XP and Vista, pressing Windows+S key stores the session into memory (not sure if it is standby/sleep or hibernate) and resumes when the system is restarted. How do I prevent this? I don't want Win+S key to do anything to do w/ power management.

Thanks in advance.

I found a comparison review of FARR w/ Launchy and couple other apps at http://www.pcmech.co...ind-programs-easily/

Of the four programs included in this roundup, Find and Run Robot was my clear winner. It simply did it all without any hiccups.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New C# FARR Plugin: FARRGoogleCalendar
« Last post by sri on June 25, 2008, 12:33 PM »
'\7' didn't help. I mean, the slash gets typed but not the number.

However, I unchecked 'digit keys launch results from search window' option and now this plugin works fine.

Is it possible by any way to make it work w/ 'digit keys launch results from search window' checked?

well, I am not able to go up to that part.

I type the following in FARR window:

gcal add gym tomorrow

and after that when I press the space bar and type '7', nothing happens. '7' doesn't get typed.  :-\
