N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: My NANY 2017 submission: EOLConverter. Uploaded bug fix.
« Last post by app103 on October 17, 2016, 08:05 PM »
Welcome, MsDayna! Glad to see you didn't forget us, and finally joined the forum. Also glad to see your NANY submission. Looks really useful. :)

I guess this may need to be said, since there are some that may not know or recognize MsDayna.

For those that dont know, MsDayna is not some unknown person that just joined the forum to upload questionable software.

Those of us that have been in the #donationcoder IRC channel for a number of years, may recognize her from efnet, before we moved the channel to freenode. (yup, same Dayna  8))

I've known her even longer, going all the way back to about 2003, from #delphi on efnet. She is one of the few people in that channel that was never too arrogant to help a Delphi newbie. Personally, I'd trust her code more than I'd trust my own, since she is a much better developer than I am.  ;)

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?
« Last post by app103 on October 12, 2016, 06:18 PM »
I am currently reading a book by a former employer. I had legal issues with him in the early 90's, related to wrongful termination and gender discrimination, and since I don't want him to make more money, especially at my expense, I bought it used for $0.01.  :D

I'd tell you what the title is, but as I said...I don't want to help him make money. It's light "educational" reading, chock full of anecdotes, targeted at small business owners. So if you are into that sort of thing, PM me and perhaps I'll mail the book to you when I am finished with it. So far, there is nothing really earth shattering in it that will help you make a million bucks, so it's a rather useless piece of entertainment.

Ahhh, I see. Much easier to find free coffee with a search engine, any search engine, than to earn one with a specific search engine.  ;)

And after over a year searching with Bing I still cannot achieve my laudable goal of a free coffee at Starbucks!

Didn't take long with Google to find the free coffee: http://www.usatoday....o-get-them/90727136/

It was 5 days ago. Looks like you just missed it.  :(

And while Starbucks did participate, they weren't one of the places giving away freebies to customers (just free coffee trees to needy farmers). Krispy Kreme was giving away free coffee and donuts, though.

then I ran into a bug I think.

I have never had that happen to me in the 10 years that I have used it. I don't know what to tell you.  :(

Basically, Newzie seems to be using it's internal browser to display the rss article. Trying to avoid that. That seems to be what most rss applications do.

That was the beauty of Klipfolio rss, it just lists the headers of the rss page and when you hover over it, it shows you the first few sentences or paragraph and if you are still interested, click on it the header and then it launches in whatever browser you have open or associated.

That's exactly what the Today window in Newzie does. Unlike the main window of the app, both the Today window and the ticker only show excerpts on hover, and if you want to read more, just click and it launches pages in your default browser.

And this is why I have some very realistic looking artificial plants. That and I don't want to have to worry about whether my plants are toxic to cats.

But if that's not something you really want to do, try growing some rye grass.

the widget screen (right hand big window) is always there. You can't hide it it.

I am not sure what you mean by this. Widget screen? What widget screen? And what do you mean by can't hide it? I don't recall Newzie ever having anything that forced you to have it on your screen at all times.

There's different modes, one of which is a large screen with a left sidebar, another is a tiny ticker that goes across your screen, and the one I am referring to, the Today window that pops up when there are new items (if you set it that way) and looks a lot like your screenshot, but color coded to indicate the age of the entries.

Curious flock to KFC's fried-chicken scented sunscreen

This is not a new idea. Back in 2008, Burger King released Whopper-scented cologne.

I think people have been covering themselves in oil and frying like chickens, for even longer than that, but now they can actually smell like it, instead of coconut.  :D

@app103: How kind of you to say so!
However, I don't know that you are necessarily correct. For example, you apparently joined in 2006 and are already at 5,643, so, arithmetically speaking, you are doing quite well and there's not too far to go to 6,000 now, whereupon - who knows? -  the aptly-named (as you have pointed out) @Miles.Ahead could well be there to congratulate you too. (The insolent cad.)    ;)

That will then make two of us who have been similarly knighted. I don't know, but there may already be more.

That loud noise is not a plane flying over your head.

@app103: Sorry. Perhaps surprisingly, the irony was implicit in the comment.
Do try to keep up.

Having to put up with people like you is precisely the reason why I may never reach 6000 posts. Now go pat yourself on the back. You earned it.

Miles, when I got out of prison for impersonating a NIP (Non-Important Person) in 2008, I joined DCF, and  you joined in 2009 (according to our stats at any rate).
So how is it that I am now just over 6,000 posts and yet you are currently way ahead with about 7,100 posts and have the effrontery to congratulate me at getting to 6,000?
What? In my youthfull exuberance, was I not expected to be able to last the distance?

Enquiring minds need to know.     :tellme:

I am amused by this. You are asking someone that goes by the handle of MilesAhead, why he's MilesAhead of you? ;D

I am unable to compile something for use on a Mac, and I have need for a small utility to be compiled, for one of the guys on my work team...the only Mac user on my team. (The rest of the team already has access to a version I compiled for Windows.)

It's just a tiny little thing to help make his work faster & easier. Source is attached at end of this post.

It's just a URL builder, which takes a Bitbucket user name and opens the URL for that profile in the default browser.

Screenshot of Windows version:

If you volunteer to do this, you'll have to compile it in Lazarus on a Mac, changing the fonts used in the memo & button to something that is actually on a Mac. I have no clue what fonts are on a Mac, other than Helvetica, so use your own discretion and choose something legible.

Also catch Wentworth, if you have the time. (much better than Orange is the New Black.)

I was very confused for a sec.  At first, after you'd been talking Prison Break, I thought you were talking about Wentworth Miller.  ;D

Strange coincidence with the name.

msconfig in Win10 will only show you Windows versions, and only ones that don't use a boot.ini file. That means only Vista+. The older versions will still be available and show on the bootloader menu, but I am unsure if it only shows them all as a single entry of "older windows version" and just hands off to the old boot.ini if you select it, and you then get hit with another menu listing each OS listed in the old boot.ini, or if it will list each older windows version from that file individually. And I will probably never know, unless I am willing to wipe the whole thing and start over, installing more old outdated crap than I could possibly ever need.

Ultimately, what I would like to do is add Xubuntu to the Win10 boot loader menu and have that menu be the default.

I used to have that problem- it was solved by removing the other options.  If windows senses others installed, it shows you that bootloader menu.  Unfortunately, I forget how I got the others to not show up.

EasyBCD?

But somehow the grub bootloader only shows Mint and Windows. Then, if I select Windows, I get a Windows bootloader which allows me to choose between Windows and Remix OS.

That is exactly how it works on my multi-boot system, too. Grub shows Xubuntu and Windows 10, then if you select Windows 10, you get the Windows bootloader with Windows 10 and the other 2 options that were installed prior to my installing Windows 10 (XP & Win7).

I'd say that in my case, Linux is definitely at an advantage here, giving me more incentive to break away from using Windows, by choosing the fastest loading option. The whole setup makes it a royal pain to want to boot up into anything other than Xubuntu. Takes too long just to select anything else!

- does it work properly like PaceMaker, or does it sound like Mickey Mouse when speeding up playback of human voices?

That all depends how much you speed it up, but If you keep hitting Faster (fine), you'll come up with a speed that should suit your purposes, without it sounding too non-human.

I was able to speed up the MP3 of this song to about 2X, before David Draiman's voice started taking on a Drac-like quality, on long notes. (Enemy Mine reference).

100+ Coats of Nail Polish

She could have been done with that in a fraction of the time, if she did thinner coats and every 3rd coat was Ruby Kisses Lightening. Then she wouldn't have had to wait as much for it to dry.

Doing my nails used to be a hobby of mine, before I acquired my first computer. I used to routinely layer on 25 coats of nail polish, plus artwork, then wear it (without it chipping) till I started to noticeably outgrow the polish, which was usually about 2 weeks.

I won't ask... Ok, I will ask.  How do you happen to have this knowledge?

I've been a nail polish fanatic since childhood and you could say I was a pioneer in the world of nail art, doing weird things to my nails waaaay before it was fashionable. While other girls were still wearing a single color, I had stripes, polka dots, and pictures. I have tried a plethora of base coats, top coats, etc. And I know the brands that not only dry fast, but are capable of drying multiple layers of regular polish beneath them, and can be acquired at a low cost. If I had not taken up computer geekery, I could very easily have become one of those successful Youtube nail polish queens or nail art bloggers. I even entertained the idea of becoming a professional manicurist, at one point, but decided against it. I didn't want to turn a fun hobby into work, with the possibility of taking all the fun out of it.

By the way, I am still in search of a good quality nail polish in the perfect shade of "circuitboard green" for a project I plan on doing to my nails. I already have the gold striping tape and perfect polish in both color and consistency for "solder dots". :D
