Living Room / Teen gets PS3 for x-mas, but guess what's inside the box
« Last post by Josh on December 29, 2007, 12:15 PM »
Thousand Oaks  --  Imagine tearing into a holiday present to find a PlayStation 3 box... with a phone book sealed inside! That's what happened to 13-year-old Brandon Burns Christmas morning. He says he laughed about it when it happened. His parents... not so much, since they spent $500 for the PS3. They say they plan on taking the phone book, the box, and their receipt back to the Thousand Oaks mall store where they bought it. Good luck, guys!

Coding Snacks / What language is the best for a new programmer to start with?
« Last post by Josh on December 28, 2007, 07:44 PM »
I have a friend who is wanting to start coding, the problem is what language. I am partial to VB and C++ as those are what I was brought up on, but I want to get some input from the coding community. Any thoughts on what would be a good place to start when going for Windows applications programming while allowing for cross platform compatibility using libraries like WxWidgets, etc.

Thoughts?

Will BestCrypt Traveler allow you to access encrypted containers on a machine where you do  not have admin privileges?

Quoting the help file:
"Please note that the user should have administrating privileges to run BestCrypt Traveller software."

"BestCrypt Traveller" seems like a very limited version of commercial "Bestcrypt". I'll stick with TrueCrypt.... 100% free, no crippleware.

Does TC allow you to run it off a usb drive and without admin rights? I would love to have a portable encryption system I can use on any system.

Living Room / Taking lights to the extreme
« Last post by Josh on December 24, 2007, 12:14 PM »
While some of his neighbors were decorating their houses with multicolored lights and illuminated Santas, Tony Hansen was building an assault on the senses. Using $10,000 worth of professional lighting and sound equipment that he borrowed from his job as a lighting designer, Hansen's 25,000-light display is synchronized to five songs, which he broadcasts over an FM-radio frequency so passers-by can pick it up in their cars.

When "Snoopy's Christmas" plays, strobe lights timed to gunfire in the song flash, and at the end, when a champagne cork pops to signal the "holiday toast" between Snoopy and the Red Baron, half of Hansen's lights cut out as if they've been hit by the flying cork.

The rest of the internet? I've yet to run into a site that ISNT A TEST SITE that IE has failed to render properly.

No fun to use? IE has been extendable since its initial release. The API has always been there and has been used by hundreds of thousands of developers. You can tie just about anything into IE.

Bad interface? Thats subjective

Ugly Icon? Again, subjective, but does it matter when it comes to browsing the web? Does an icon affect your browsing?

Name? Umm, sounds like reaching for straws to me.

The best idea in IE7 was hiding the Menu bar automatically, using the ALT key to display it. I rarely go to the menus, and this saves valuable screen space. I wish Opera would do this.

This quote is getting saved from you zaine :)

Living Room / Blu ray vs HD DVD
« Last post by Josh on December 22, 2007, 08:13 AM »
OK Folks, once I move I plan to make the switch to the HD Formats to coincide with my 1080P TV. I was wondering, which of these formats has an advantage over the other? From what I see on the web, its mainly opinion and no side-by-side comparison of the features and technologies. Does anyone know if HD-DVD supports 1080P? Does bluray offer something over HDDVD and vice-versa? Does anyone here own one of these players?

Any input is appreciated.

I figured that since we have a "3 favorite programs" thread, why not a portable one? I am always interested in seeing what programs are used portably.

Mine are as follows:

Roboform Portable
OpenOffice Portable
FoxIT Reader Portable

Am I wrong in that firefox still does not pass acid2? So is microsoft finally doing something that even mozilla cant do? I mean, to me the fact that microsoft can do this is a pretty amazing step given their past history with standards compliance.

General Software Discussion / Current IE8 build renders the ACID2 Test correctly!
« Last post by Josh on December 19, 2007, 05:17 PM »
The most current build of IE8 running in standards mode now correctly renders the Acid2 browser test.

Acid2 is a test that determines how well a browser works with several different web standards.  Successfully rendering Acid2 is an important landmark for IE8, as it highlights the interoperability, standards compliance and backwards compatibility that we're committed to for this release.  We are also announcing that IE8 Beta 1 will be released in the first half of 2008.  This is the first significant disclosure of IE8 features and standards support and we expect broad interest.  A Channel 9 video interview will provide further detail on this announcement.

As per usual, we will continue to collect designer and developer feedback to determine additional milestone timelines further down the line.
New information for developers:  One of the goals of IE8 is to support the right set of standards with excellent implementation and without breaking the existing web.  Last week, IE8 reached a core milestone:  IE8 in standard mode now correctly renders the “Acid2 Browser Test”.  Acid2 is a test that determines how well a browser works with several different web standards.

This guy took pictures of himself everyday for 8 years. After he bought his Nikon CoolPix 900 camera, his girlfriend asked if he would be using it everyday with a sarcastic inflection. Little did she know that he was about to begin the project of his life. Click the image to see the video.
