Living Room / Re: Automakers Want to Outlaw Gearheads From Working on Their Own Cars

edit// not really sure if this in correct thread, but will leave it...

From here:

http://ifixit.org/bl...7007/farm-equipment/

And a snippet from there:

Aside from using it, there’s not much you can do with modern ag equipment. When it breaks or needs maintenance, farmers are dependent on dealers and manufacturer technicians—a hard pill to swallow for farmers, who have been maintaining their own equipment since the plow."

"[DIY repair] is cheaper than calling out the technician. But that information is just not out there," Dave explained to me.

The cost and hassle of repairing modern tractors has soured a lot of farmers on computerized systems altogether. In a September issue of Farm Journal, farm auction expert Greg Peterson noted that demand for newer tractors was falling. Tellingly, the price of and demand for older tractors (without all the digital bells and whistles) has picked up. “As for the simplicity, you’ve all heard the chatter,” Machinery Pete wrote. “There’s an increasing number of farmers placing greater value on acquiring older simpler machines that don’t require a computer to fix.”

The problem is that farmers are essentially driving around a giant black box outfitted with harvesting blades. Only manufacturers have the keys to those boxes. Different connectors are needed from brand to brand, sometimes even from model to model—just to talk to the tECU. Modifications and troubleshooting require diagnostic software that farmers can’t have. Even if a farmer managed to get the right software, calibrations to the tECU sometimes require a factory password. No password, no changes—not without the permission of the manufacturer.

John Deere, in particular, has been incredibly effective at limiting access to its diagnostic software. Which is why I wouldn’t have been able to tweak the programming on Dave’s tractor, even if I had been able to hack together the right interface. John Deere doesn’t want me to. The dealer-repair game is just too lucrative for manufacturers to cede any control back to farmers.

I report this in case: (1) with apologies if reported already, and (2) I think it might be a problem with how AHK works with window display i.e. unfixable.

To reproduce:

  • Resize e.g. first column smaller -- so as text not all readable
  • Resize window height - [the columns auto-resize to text width]
  • Resize first column again

Splat freezes, (has to be killed)

and what is the benefit? Why should I use SC and not start the other app?
I dont know -- I'm not familiar with the other app, so I cannot say.

Here is a quote from mouser (the author):

Will there also be a text-capture (OCR like) in future?
i.e. a screenshot with text - the text is OCR'ed and then copy pasted into something else

Again not currently possible, though it has come up before.  You can easily add tools to SC menu to launch external processes, which should make it possible to use a 3rd-party OCR tool, but im not sure anyone has done this yet..

So, no, it's not what you request here:

mws reader should do it in backround. so that I use only SC

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

Is there by now an easy way to upgrade from a computer with OEM win8 pro to a clean install (not upgrade on top of win8) of win10 pro? I.e. extract a key from my win8, put a win10 iso on a USB, format the harddrive and then clean install win10. Has anyone here done it? Did you run into any issues?

Not directly AFAIK -
see the linked dc thread (it is a couple of months old, so things *may* have changed since, but I dont think so)
Windows 10 Clean Install Instructions
Summary
you would have to do the upgrade in place, Windows 10 registers the hardware - you can then format and do a clean install. I *think* you then dont even need a key (but check that - is discussed in thread).

MWS Reader homepage is here: http://www.mwsreader.com/en/

Could you add it to 'External Tools' in SC:

WinPatrol is the type of application that tries to detect changes to these setting from external causes, not the Windows built-in screens & features.

I was wondering if that the case -- thanks Ath

hmm i changed association as a test, and winpatrol did nothing?
-jadekitten5425 (November 10, 2015, 02:18 PM)

you have me there -
I just tried it myself, and nothing... There is a setting in the Plus version that changes notification to real-time, but that didnt produce any response either :-/

I thought it used work, but very seldom change, or allow file associations to change on this machine.
Maybe someone else is more familiar with that aspect of WinPatrol?
Or anyone have a different/better suggestion?

FWIW it's very minimal in terms of resource usage --
currently @ 9MB memory use, and at times it goes *up* to >0.01 CPU (mostly it's not using any).

In everyday use, the only messages I get would be as per your request, and/or if an app puts itself in start-with-Windows.
I mostly dont use the rest of it's capabilities, but it can be helpful in tracking down malware etc.

They still have a free version, but it's not clear to me if it will do what you want.

WinPatrol keeps an eye on this:
Managing File Types & Associations

WinPatrol will monitor registered file types and alert you if a change has occurred. There are two useful reasons to monitor file types.

A malicious program may modified standard types causing you to run dangerous program when you perform normally safe operations. Many virus programs, for example, have been known to change the action taken when a user clicks on an .EXE file.

A new legitimate program may reassign file association of file types without your permission. The result: instead of your preferred media program opening, another media program opens instead to view media files. For example, if you quickly install a new photo program it may re-assign the program association for your JPG and GIF files without your permission. WinPatrol will alert you and allow you to change back to your original program association.

WinPatrol allows you to view information about file types and if required restore them to their previous association.

Sort of getting into the guitar solo thing :p only kidding -- it's not my first port of call -- but I did [start to] grow up in the 70's so heard a fair bit... Not so much a fan of 'Mayall et. al.', but like a lot of what I've heard from Cream:

Living Room / Re: Does anyone here use Bitcoins?
« Last post by tomos on November 09, 2015, 01:02 PM »
I'm confused about transaction fees. I've read that they're completely optional, but I can't figure out how to make a transaction without including transaction fees. Maybe that's because the client I'm using (Bitcoin Core) doesn't allow that? It has an option I've checked to "send as zero-fee transaction if possible" but when I click send the confirmation screen shows the fee added in there automatically anyway.

The fees are fairly minimal. But when I'm only sending a few cents (in USD) anyway to get a feel for how it works, it kinda sucks losing even a penny of it in fees. Feels kind of like handing a dollar bill to a friend, then having him hand it back and it only being worth 98 cents.

still a whole lot better than e.g. paypal ...

Also, the initial sync was brutal. Over 50GB of blockchain data. If I had known then what I know now, I'd have chosen a different, "lightweight" bitcoin wallet software.

is that 50GB stored on your machine :tellme:
