The flame warriors pictures have been made into 65x65 avatar images and put in the dc forum avatar list so anyone who wants can select them for their avatar image.

Thanks to DC member scancode for creating them from the original images by Mike Reed on the Flame Warriors site.

ps. Before anyone asks us if we have permission to use them: I emailed Mike and asked him if it was ok and got a reply in about 30 seconds saying "By all means, use them - that's what they're there for - thanks for asking".  Three cheers for mike!

Living Room / Flash Toy of the Week: How Well Can you Differentiate Colors?
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2008, 02:32 PM »
I recently made a few trips back and forth to the paint store trying to find an acceptable match for the colors on my ceiling so I could do some touchup painting.

I started wondering: what are the chances that I could find a color close enough to the current one that *I* personally wouldn't see any difference, but others who have better color perception might see clearly the differences and therefore perceive the ceiling and wall as being painted with two different colors of paints.

So I was happy to find this little online flash test which challenges you to line up color hues in order to see how sensitive you are to small differences. I suspect the quality of your monitor could effect the test someone, but very cool idea and quite useful.

I got a 32 without obsessing over perfection:

what score do you get?

Find And Run Robot / Re: Match Alias First?
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2008, 02:06 PM »
d4ni is right, those folders are too big for FARR to normally search through except in worst case scenario.
many people like that FARR has no indexing but yes, indexing will be added, as an OPTION, for such cases in the future.

aliases are always matched first
and always shown before any other matches.

so this should be impossible:
Lately, about 50% of the time, when I type "en" it auto-completes to something else FARR is searching for (in my Program Files folder, since that's the first search directory).

maybe something else is happening.. can you observe next time what exactly it is matching against instead of the alias?

what if the podcast was mainly a series of short segments where various people on DC talked about what they were up to?
nudone and timns could talk about their latest webcomics
other people could talk about their websites, etc

can you get a list of the last ips that have checked that file in the recent past? if you can't using logs on your website, your website host may be able to.

if you find an ip that isn't one of yours, maybe someone here can help you track it down.

Make sure you sit down and try to remember any sensitive logins or data that might be on the pc that you need to worry about or have changed.

This event has inspired me to adjust my backup plans to anticipate a break in and theft.
This means i really to finally have to start using an online encrypted backup solution and/or a practice of hiding a backup drive in the house somewhere.

The truth is that there are good sides to this episode.  You lost a lot of important stuff.. but you didn't lose so much to make you have a nervous breakdown, and now you've learned how absolutely critically important it is to back stuff up regularly.

This lesson may save you one day, because you'll not let yourself get into a situation where your working on some giant project and you lose it all.  So consider this a wake up call -- a message from the universe telling you: Back up your data regularly.

Wow that has got to be extremely stressful. Damn these people.  This makes me so angry.

I think you did good to buy yourself a new laptop right away -- that's the way to keep your brain from obsessing about the one you lost.

Hang in there and just concentrate on your studies and try not to think about it too much.  Aside from having everything stolen you might also just be all stressed out over the fact that someone broke into your place and feel like you have to walk around in a hyper vigilant mode.  Damn these people i hope they get what's coming to them.  And as for you you just have to allow yourself to grieve for a bit and then try to just push on with your life and not let this get to you.

ABSOLUTELY get the mac and contact the ISP and see what they can do.. you could get lucky and it's worth a try.

Podcast Radio Show / Re: Requesting Ideas for DonationCoder Podcast #7
« Last post by mouser on September 15, 2008, 04:26 PM »
Another issue is whether there should be some more structure and focus than we had in the past.  Mainly this was just a matter of we put on the show anything anyone submitted.. That has it's own charm, especially for those of us who are on the site all the time -- it's just fun to hear other regulars speak.  But on the other hand it may not have much value for non-regulars.

What might be cool to find some kind of "hook", some theme or format that would make for a sustainable podcast that could be produced once a month.

Some ideas: keep the podcasts SHORT.  15-20 minutes in length.  anything more is too hard to make and listen to.

You know what would be cool: Something like the McGloughlin Group but for software (see http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=oSqsBfBCW7k).  Basically a heated group discussion on new software and hardware/technology.  Someone would have to figure out how to record such a phone meeting though..  Seems difficult.

It might be helpful to reflect on the reasons that the original podcast proved hard to keep producing:

1) too few people willing to record segments
2) no one person who loved making creating the podcasts -- i believe that this is one of those things that really needs one or two people who in their hearts have secretly always wanted to have their own radio show.
3) very uneven recording quality and volume control -- made it less pleasant to listen to.

Developer's Corner / OSNews.com Multi-part Article on User Interfaces and Usability
« Last post by mouser on September 15, 2008, 01:29 PM »
Thom Holwerda over at OSNews.com has been writing a regular series that he calls "Common Usability Terms" but the title is misleading.  The series is actually quite an interesting take on different graphic user interface techniques and metaphors, discussing both historical origins and the functional motivations.

Very readable and just another demonstration that OSNews.com is improving every day and becoming essential reading for developers.

This is the ninth article in a series on common usability and graphical user interface related terms [part I | part II | part III | part IV | part V | part VI | part VII | part VIII]. On the internet, and especially in forum discussions like we all have here on OSNews, it is almost certain that in any given discussion, someone will most likely bring up usability and GUI related terms - things like spatial memory, widgets, consistency, Fitts' Law, and more. The aim of this series is to explain these terms, learn something about their origins, and finally rate their importance in the field of usability and (graphical) user interface design. In part IX, we are going to talk about the menu.
