I've made yet more changed to the URL button when posting:
Screenshot - 9_20_2008 , 7_29_06 PM_thumb.png

Now if you have selected some text before you hit the button, you are only asked for the url to link your text to.
If no text is selected, you will be asked for both url and label.

Developer's Corner / Re: Universe Project
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2008, 07:26 PM »
I'm reallllly excited about this project.

I played EV Nova a few years ago and it left a lasting impression on me for a few reasons.

I'm not a heavy duty gamer so i tend to gravitate towards simpler games with simpler controls.  The complicated real-time-strategy games are all just too overwhelming for me.

What really impressed me about EV Nova was that it seemed like a perfect example of a fairly low-budget game which struck all the right balances in terms of the game engine graphics/technology, the control scheme, and the storyline.  To me it was a textbook example of a game that drew you into it's world, was engrossing and hard to stop playing, and wasn't overwhelming.  For me everything just "felt" right in terms of the control scheme, etc., and the graphics were nice but from a developer's point of view not out of the reach of a single or small group of developers.

So i've long wanted to work on a game similar to EV Nova but it's hard for me to find the time to do it.  I was ecstatic when Deozaan started working on a game with an interface similar to EV Nova.  He has worked really hard on the basic control feel and we have talked a lot about the importance of simplicity of control and getting the flow just right.

I think it's really off to a fantastic start and I can't wait to see how it progresses.

Daniel,

What I'm about to say might give you some feeling of exhaustion because of how much work you've clearly put into that tutorial, but i would *highly* recommend that rather than work on improving this ms agent based tutorial, that you set about making a set of short flash-based "screencasts" demonstrating various features.

Let me explain:
  • The interactive tutorials you've created are really nice and fun, and are perfect for someone who has already downloaded and decided to use your program -- they will teach them how to use it to it's fullest.
  • But what you also need and what this tutorial doesn't help much with, is some shorter screencasts (video movies) that can be viewed over the internet without the user having to download anything.
  • The screencasts don't have to teach people how to do stuff -- their main purpose will be to demonstrate cool features quickly so users without much time can check out if you're program is a good fit for them.  I advise making a few of them showing different features rather than 1 big long one, so they load quickly and don't require a big commitment.
  • There are several tools you can use to make these screencasts, both free and commercial.

Living Room / Re: News Article: Laptop Border Search Procedures To Be Documented
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2008, 04:15 PM »
This would go a long way towards curbing abuses.  I think TSA agents should also be required to fill out some kind of form stating exactly WHY they are taking your laptop, with stringent requirements that it be a detailed and real explanation.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Visio not liking SC's screenshots !?
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2008, 12:28 PM »
Just a couple of tips:
  • You can drag and drop images from the thumbnail view to any other program like Visio -- no need to copy and paste.
  • You can set the DPI of your screenshots from within Screenshot Captor -- this won't effect screen display but it does affect printing size and size when pasted into some programs like Microsoft Word, etc.

f0dder is right about the cause.
another solution is to just delete the ini settings file.

i can fix this problem in future versions -- xerces8 can you mail me your ini file so i can help test a solution? ([email protected])

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 7 -- ribbons for everyone!
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2008, 11:42 AM »
I think there are some nice things to like about the Ribbon.

But this whole discussion just underlines a point I have been trying to make: The OS designer/company should stop focusing on writing applications.

The very fact that the focus of "Windows 7" discussion is about adding ribbons to the microsoft applications which really have nothing whatsoever to do with the operating system itself tells you how far down the wrong path we have gone.

That is really strange..
The fact that you are going through the clipboard each time is somewhat of a clue that suggests to me it's not to do with the file formats, since i think it should always be copying image data to the clipboard as bitmaps.

You are doing a lot of extra steps through MS Paint that you shouldnt have to be doing.

Can you try this:
Open the screenshot in SC.  Make sure you click in the main window area of SC or select a region of your image in SC, and hit Ctrl+C.  Now paste it into visio and save.  Exit and restart visio and see if it works.

You could also try the same thing you were doing above that failed using MS Paint EXCEPT do not use MS Paint, but use something like irfanview.

The Form Letter Machine / Re: Any update on this program?
« Last post by mouser on September 18, 2008, 11:04 PM »
Sorry i haven't replied sooner.
The issue with updating TFLM is simply one of trying to think of minor updates the program might need before i have to work on a major completely new version.  If you have suggestions let me know.

this is not a global hotkey we are talking about, but one only triggerable once chs is the current application -- so what we want is something standard like ctrl+F.

I love it.  Great post ander

Actually i agree with you 100%.  Finding out that there is no update available for Mobysaurus is not a cause for celebration.
A more appropriate messagebox would be: "Our deepest consolations and condolences.. There is still no update available for Mobysaurus."

Living Room / MakeUseOf.com: 15+ Podcasts Every Geek Should Listen To
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2008, 08:27 PM »
Nice roundup of technology podcasts:

Podcasts, Netcasts, call them what you want. Every geek out there should be listening to these things. Every single one of you. If ever you see a geek with earphones plugged into his/her ears, I guarantee you they are listening to the latest podcasts. It’s just something most geeks can’t live without. We thrive on the latest podcasts.

Now, I know there are still some people out there who haven’t listened to many podcasts, and I’ve been feeling a bit sorry for those people because they are missing out on so much. So, I’ve decided to make a list of my favorite podcasts so that new listeners can have some suggestions while sifting through the thousands of new podcasts each day.
