I hear ya Carol, but when i read it i didn't read it as attacking those websites listed, quite the contrary.
I read it as two separate points:
First, here is a list of sites people find useful.
  • Second, here are some common problems with getting advice and help on some discussion forums. I thought the problems pointed out were reasonable concerns, even if they aren't problems i think are present on DC.

well i think he was just quoting someone who was making a general comment about the problems with many support sites.. and the comment is no doubt valid for many of them.  happily at DC I think it's safe to say that we welcome non-techie people with open arms and are happy to lend a hand to anyone who needs help

Living Room / Nice mention of DonationCoder in Windows Secrets Newsletter
« Last post by mouser on October 02, 2008, 03:09 PM »
Brian Livingston who edits the Windows Secrets Newsletter writes this in his current newsletter:

I announced last week that I'd hold a meeting in the London area to get feedback from subscribers (see Figure 1). This is the second in a series of free seminars I'm holding in the few hours between changing planes in various airports of the world. The first seminar was held on June 15 in Hong Kong (see my June 19 report).

It's always been a dream of mine for readers to have a structured, online way to help each other and get help in return. We may be able to realize this goal as early as next year.

I asked readers to let me know about high-tech user forums that they already visit, and what they like and dislike about them. Here's a list of some of the forums that were submitted, in case you haven't heard of them all:

• AutoPatcher
• Experts Exchange (specifically, the forum on Microsoft products)
• Dell Support
• DigitalSpy
Donation Coder
• Google Groups
• Infoworld
• Microsoft Software Forum Network (independent, not affiliated with Microsoft)
• Neowin Forum
• PC Pro
• The Register (comments on articles)
• Techworld (described by one reader as "now moribund")
• Yahoo Groups
• Zone Labs User Forum

Living Room / Stephen King's "N." - 25 Short Videos
« Last post by mouser on October 02, 2008, 03:49 AM »
These are quite cool.. mysterious and ominous story and a beautifully drawn and animated comic.  All online (ad supported) for viewing.

Master storyteller Stephen King presents a revolutionary new form of entertainment: his short story “N.” brought to vibrant life through a series of 25 graphic video episodes. The original series tells the story of a psychiatrist who falls victim to the same deadly obsession as his patient—an obsession that just might save the world!

Drawn by award-wining comic book artist Alex Maleev, and colored by famed comic book colorist José Villarrubia, the episodes were adapted by Marc Guggenheim, co-creator of the ABC-TV series “Eli Stone” with creative oversight from Stephen King.

DonationCoder.com recently teamed up with fellow DC Member Chris Hanscom from Veign.com to sponsor a small programming challenge.  Chris and I agonized over who to award the grand prize (a $10K MSDN Visual Studio Bundle) to, and eventually ended up giving it to longtime DC member Eoin O'Callaghan.

The person who we almost awarded to the prize was Eric Wong (VideoInPicture) who stumbled upon DC right as the programming challenge was announced.  To our extremely pleasant surprise, Eric didn't skip a beat when he didn't win the grand prize, and just kept on coding and sharing his creations with the rest of us.  He wrote some coding snacks based on requests on the forum, and has been actively working on his programs based on feedback from everyone here.  He's really added a lot to the site.

So.. when Chris unexpectedly got his hands on another of the giant Visual Studio Bundles to give away.. We both immediately thought of Eric, and it was clear to us both that the thing to do was to give this copy to Eric as a gesture of thanks and recognition for his work.

It's a great feeling to be able to recognize Eric's contributions in this way, and I want to thank Chris for letting me and DC be part of the process.

ps.
There are a huge number of you who contribute to DC, both in coding and in other ways -- and I hope no one feels like they are being taken for granted when we giveaway something like this to one particular person.  It's impossible to thank everyone properly who helps make this site a better place -- i hope you will join me in viewing these things from the standpoint of a victory for one of us being a victory for all of us.

ProcessTamer / Re: Enabled but not running...
« Last post by mouser on September 30, 2008, 07:55 AM »
Do you see the process tamer icon in the tray? And the configuration program says it's running?
Try this:
  • go to options and change Cpu Usage Trigger High to 10%
  • and see what happens when you run the test cpueating program that eats up a lot of cpu.
  • make sure you look at icon for it to change or hover your mouse over the icon to see if its taming the application just in case you have balloon tips turned off.

A *giant* thank you to Carl Thorpe, who has been organizing these discounts and giveaways.  Without him there wouldn't be any.  Not only has he been hunting down and organizing the discounts but he does all the work of updating the pages with the discount info, etc.  It's a fair amount of work and he deserves our thanks. Thank you Carl.

URL Snooper doesnt work very well with flash movies because of the way the flash player communicates with server and generates the urls for the streams.

Mentioned on the official remember the milk blog today:
http://blog.rememberthemilk.com/

ps.
Is it just me or is phitsc trying to compete with me in a contest of who can do the worst job of naming their software?  May i suggest that trying to pronounce "FarrRMillk" is reminiscent of reciting poetry while eating peanut butter..  How about changing the name while you still have time, before it gets too popular.  I suggest something simple like: "FarrMilk".  Kind of sounds like a science fiction energy drink of the future.

« Last post by mouser on September 26, 2008, 05:43 PM »
I can add ability to set format to BMP, i have to release a new version soon and will add it.

A .png renamed to .bmp isn't a .bmp - it's still a .png
katykaty, you are correct in 99% of the cases this would be true.  however SC has a special functionality -- if you change the filename in the bottom panel, and you specify a file extension, SC will actually convert the file while it renames it :)

I think the problem is that your map is shown in 2 different pages in your profile -- the summary where you cannot change it, and the profile information page (https://www.donation...file;sa=forumProfile) where you can edit it.  i need to make a link from the first to the second, as it is confusing.
