Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR Alias "f"
« Last post by mouser on October 11, 2008, 07:08 PM »
This is the "fileinfo" alias, activated by typing something like:
fileinfo mdb
and it tells you about the .mdb file extension.

These are both sites for giving info on FILE EXTENSIONS.. we probably should add some more items to that fileinfo alias that return info about specific files like "system.dat" not just file extensions.

If anyone has any recommendations let me know.

because python is so closely tied to an underlying base of C code and exposes most of it, i would think python could be a good option.

Ok so it does sound like something is going wrong with D+D robot.  It's been a while since i was in the source code -- i'll take a look and see what i see and report back.

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: Major CPU flaw?
« Last post by mouser on October 11, 2008, 12:19 AM »
there are too possibilities here.. either i have forgotten something and am using a huge amount of cpu monitoring the launched application.. or more likely, what's happening is that D+D Robot is being "blamed" for the cpu use of the program you are launching.

In other words, i suspect that cpu usage you are seeing is really the cpu use of the launched program -- it's just being assigned to D+D Robot because of the way D+D launches the program.

General Software Discussion / RegBench - Registry Benchmarker Utility
« Last post by mouser on October 10, 2008, 10:24 PM »
Looks like DC friend Jeremy Collake (maker of PECompact) released a cool little utility recently that benchmarks registry speed.

As Martin on ghacks points out, this will finally make it much easier to answer the questions about the effects of registry defragging and cleaning.  I can't wait to see the benchmark scores on before and after registry defragging so we can see what the real speedup is.

This was a fun thread i thought.. people who believe in god are bound to have a different take on it than those of us who don't -- as long as no one tries to tell the others what questions to ask (or what answer we would be likely to get) i don't see the harm.

General Software Discussion / Re: advice wanted re: software bounties
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2008, 09:31 PM »
Another site that does this kind of stuff and is pretty nicely designed is http://www.micropledge.com.
They have actually put out a call for help for donations recently so give them a visit for sure.

I'm definitely interested in hearing about your idea, and yes i welcome you to post about it on dc if you do set it up somewhere.

I think you summed up the dilemna exactly as i understand it:
I think the big critiques of bounties is it that they create a mercenary feel and take away the fun of coding a project, which is a problem because you're still reliant on programmers being naturally interested in the project unless you can raise the obscene $ to pay for an actual contract programmer.

In other words, these types of projects usually don't have enough money to outright hire someone who will take it on as a professional job, and for whom getting paid is a primary concern.  Which means the people you are trying to appeal to are usually people for whom money is low on the list of their priorities, and so its kind of weird to focus on a bounty type thing where money is such a dominant aspect of the project.

Recently I've been thinking about alternative approaches.. For example a programmer presenting an idea they want to work on, and looking for someone to match their coding time with some small amount of funding money, and then the two people being co-owners of the work produced..

I will post a detailed response tonight and if problems remain we can talk via email ([email protected]).

LaunchBar Commander / Right-clicking on a node -- what do you want it to show
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2008, 02:37 AM »
At long last I have implemented the right-clicking of nodes on the launchbar (new version not yet released as of oct 9, 2008 but will be released in next few days).

The main thing i think everyone will agree that we want to show on the pop-up context menu is the normal system shell context menu for the file or folder clicked on.

But i want to know if people thing other things should be shown instead on this right-click menu?

« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2008, 09:47 PM »
Just a reminder -- some people have warned us that magic jack occasionally employs people to post on forums praising their product.

Not accusing anyone of doing this just reminding anyone thinking of doing such a thing here for any product, that it's the fastest way to develop a very bad reputation for your product and is definitely not the thing to do on this forum.

Find And Run Robot / FARR: New feature: User Variables tab
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2008, 02:30 PM »
I've implemented a new feature that makes it possible for users to define UserVariables which aliases and plugins can read (and write).

For those who want to try it before the next official release:
https://www.donation...AndRunRobotSetup.exe
(if you have no use for the functionality of user variables you might as well wait for next official release)

You can find a description of what User Variables are and how to use them in the online help section here: https://www.donation...s___advanced_use.htm

Living Room / Re: How to enter code???? :)
« Last post by mouser on October 07, 2008, 07:00 PM »
The far more troubling aspect of this captcha is this part:
"There is no zero."

I certainly hope this is a typo because it's going to cause some serious turmoil in the field of Number Theoryw if it turns out to be true.

Living Room / Re: How to enter code???? :)
« Last post by mouser on October 07, 2008, 06:50 PM »
clearly when they say to enter it exactly as it appears, they want you to put in the Postscriptw or LaTexw codes that will regenerate it.  your first step will be to figure out what font it is, then start measuring the angles and get yourself a good book on LaTexw and the mathematics of curve descriptions.

That is *extremely* cool.
Screenshot - 10_7_2008 , 5_12_59 PM.png

Just testing out and from 6 to 12 point look terrific.  Very cool.  At 14 point and beyond there are some strange artifacts (see lowercase "a" but i'm not sure why anyone would want to use Dina at 14 point or higher so i dont think it matters).

Really great work -- people ask for this regularly.
