General Software Discussion / Re: Fixing File Associations (PDF)
« Last post by tomos on December 04, 2015, 05:40 AM »
Since you've got DOpus you might find it easier to do it in there, Settings->File Types->System File Types

[ Invalid Attachment ]

That's usually how I end up fixing associations that screw up.

that was interesting -- even though it (Dopus) shows the Adobe Acrobat icon and states: "Opens with: Adobe Reader", when I go to edit as per your screenshot, it had the following for open:
"C:\Windows\eHome\ehshell.exe" "%1"
which turns out to be Windows Media Center ...

Thanks for the tip -- I think it need a log-off or reboot before it works -- will report back later :up:

EDIT// it wasn't working because I put "1%" instead of "%1" after the exe path :D
All seems to be fixed now, very painless thanks to your help :up:

General Software Discussion / Fixing File Associations (PDF)
« Last post by tomos on December 04, 2015, 04:54 AM »
Windows 7 x64

I'm having persistent trouble with PDF file associations: *sometimes* PDF's open in Windows Media Player. Usually it's when another programme tries to open a PDF, currently Softmaker is the culprit, but I've had the same problem with other software, so I know this is not a Softmaker issue.
I have found no helpful tips online (some others have the problem, but get the usual - set default file associations e.g. via file context menu, which makes no difference).

So I'm asking here :-)

Starter Question is:
where in the REgistry do I set file associations *and* how exactly do I do it ?
=>
IIUC default file associations are here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\

Here's a screenshot:

Screenshot - 2015-12-04 , 11_14_35.png

The persistent handler is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\PersistentHandler
=> (Default) - REG_SZ - {F6594A6D-D57F-4EFD-B2C3-DCD9779E382E}

The shell ex is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\ShellEx\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}
=> => (Default) - REG_SZ - {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}
This bit may be irrelevant:
When I search for this {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193} (from shell ex key) I get lots of hits about why preview doesnt work in Outlook. I dont know if this is relevant as I dont use or have Outlook.

Screenshot Captor / Re: SC: Discussion of Scanning Functions
« Last post by tomos on December 02, 2015, 07:34 AM »
Either I was wrong all along (wont be a first) or you did some work on this and PDF creation now works in a more logical manner:
basically a PDF is created at exactly the size of the image.
So, if I scan an A4 page @ 300dpi, and crop it a bit - it will show in the PDF Reader's print preview at it's actual size i.e. almost A4 size (so long as fit-to-page is not enabled).

I've not used creation of PDF's from screenshots before:
this is logical, PDF is size of screenshot -- mind you the resolution is very low (I'm not sure what exactly it is).

Topic beer:
there's a new craft beer shop opened in the nearest town here. I avoided it for a while -- I mean why pay four euro for a beer when I can get a quite-good one @ less than one euro a bottle ?

Well, I finally tried a few bottles, and they've ruined my capacity for 'good-enough' beer :down: :)
But there are advantages to drinking high-quality beer -- it can taste incredibly good (no guarantee though**), and you cant afford to drink so much of it :p

** I've tried some of the supposedly best beers in the world (e.g. Belgian beers Chimay Blue, and Trappistes Rochefort @ various strengths) and just dont see what the fuss is about. But then I'm a pils drinker, so can relate more to styles that use more hops.

« Last post by tomos on November 30, 2015, 04:38 PM »
mouser! are you looking for an idea? :)

Convert PopUp Quotes to a personalised reminder and/or motivational and/or goals software. Could even be used for random ToDo's that dont need to be done urgently. Or simply a way of running ideas by every now and again so that they can rattle around in the background -- that's the main idea: that one sees a suggestion or idea on occasion, unexpectedly, to help keep it in mind. But instead of coming (directly) from others, the are from out input, from our experience.
Or it could be simply something like 'helpful tips for me'.

I know this can all be done, but it need ease-of-use for non-motivated people like me :-\
Seriously though, imo it does need ease of use before it could be presented as software for these purposes.

Doesn't need much work I dont think:

  • ability to easily add text/quote (e.g. via popup or the tray icon - would possibly have to be limited to one editable file)
  • ability to delete (quoted) text (ideally via button on the popup)
  • ability to edit text (ideally via button on the popup) -- PopUp Quotes just showed "Remove a Restriction" (no kidding: that's what I love about this app)

[..] some pictures are in 'standing mode' while others ''lie down'' (not sure how to put that in english, hoping you still understand what  I mean).

nice way of putting it (and very understandable) -- 'Portrait' and 'Landscape' would be the terms used
('Hoch' and 'quer' auf deutsch if that's any help).

Are your images different sizes?
Are the frames/margins always the same width?
-tomos

Sadly there aren't a lot of constant factors. The only thing we can see as an certainty is that the white frame is always located at the bottom of the picture. But it can vary in width cause some pictures are in 'standing mode' while others ''lie down'' (not sure how to put that in english, hoping you still understand what  I mean).

And.. besides those differences the pictures are also in various sizes as an whole. So I already figured that wasnt the best outcome for an coding adventure... right?

it might possibly be of help that the margins are all white -- but I wouldn't know as I dont know anything about coding myself...
But the IrfanView route would not work AFAIK if frame width varies a lot.

I did this once with IrfanView but dont have it installed here so cannot check. I remember it being a little unintuitive -- at least I had to mess around a bit before I discovered how exactly to get X number of pixels off of the bottom of multiple images. I was removing the taskbar from screenshots, some of which had already been cropped (but the taskbar edge was not cropped so I always wanted to remove that 'X' number of pixels).

Are the frames/margins always the same width?

It is odd Curt -- this is the only result if I search for "adblock shield light 1.3.9" or "adblock shield".
Dont want to make you paranoid, but I wouldnt be too sure about not having a virus -- or something in that direction.

Might it not be better to just do a system restore and pretend it never happened?

Depending on what your bank charges for currency conversion, it'll be cheaper if you buy it in AUD at AUD$29.95

thanks for this -- yeah, it was 4 euros cheaper using AU$.
PayPal tried to compensate by charging me one Euro more than the current XE.com exchange rate (but of course they would have done that no matter the currency).

If anyone else is going for this - dont forget to untick extended download for the 29.95 AUD price !
