Hey Supe - why do you have iTunes installed? For an iPad or iPhone? I got an iPad for Christmas and I have nt yet installed iTunes. Don’t think I will either. So far I have been able to get most files I want on the iPad via DropBox. However each time I download a file from DropBox it (DB) stops showing my list of files! Page says "Loading" but the entire file list is missing. Next day I go to the DB site and it's fine. I select a handful of files again and download them. Then the file list disappears once again. I haven't figured this out yet.

Thanks!

Jim
Yeah, I have the ipad1.  I don't know what you're problem is, but I've had lots of problems with things like dropbox, evernote, (cloud stuff) in that a lot of the wifi security can really restrict a lot of that stuff.  They have a stupid amount of security at my work, and even with all my special access profiles, I can't use my ipad or any tablet with dropbox and evernote because it gets blocked.  it's not the intent of IT here, but that's what happens.  Again, too much paranoia to the point where these devices become largely unusable.

The iOS can just be finicky at times.  Usually things connect really easily, but when there's a problem, it's difficult to troubleshoot it.  Apple is not troubleshooting friendly exactly because they are easy to use.

I'm surprised you haven't had to use itunes yet.  Didn't you have to connect it to itunes initially just to start using it?  I just jailbroke my ipad yesterday to ios5.01 so that I can use the comic reader mobi app.

I'm really just waiting for a nice windows tablet.  These androids and ios don't cut it for me

It's true what you say...I get it.  But is there really money in it?  I'll do one or two if that's the case.  I know what people like... ;)

Boy, Steven and tranglos have got me thinking about all these todo programs...

I had never tried ListPro before, I just tried it now.  What a strange application!  On one hand, it seems very plain.  On the other hand, there are some really cool features and itneresting interface ideas there.  it's definitely quirky and seems to be well thought out.  It's VERY fast.  Great outline navigation features, hard to describe, but got it just right.  Printing is awful as with all the other ones.

Seriously, what's the deal with printing?  Am I the only one who wants to print my lists and take it with me to meetings to show others?  Maybe nobody else works away from their computer, I don't know.  I think it must be fairly difficult to program a good printing featureset because nobody does it for any of these information managers.

I agree with tranglos, I sue MLO for mostly long-term, serious type of lists.  I don't make quickie lists in it.  Swift seems to be much better at that (although it seems to have some pretty hardcore database features also).

We'll see where I end up.  I'm being more organic in my approach to this PIM software now.  I'm not trying to find the best of the best anymore.  I let the software come to me as the need arises.  I seem to be using mostly these software right now for my information management: Treesheets for brainstorming (brilliant); MLO for serious task lists; RightNote for general note-taking; CHS for capturing all my clipboard content; infoqube for specialized database type of lists like, say, all the songs and albums of a particular artist I like.

What's with the youtube videos that have millions of views but all they are are crappy animal slideshow?  I don't get it.  Usually, it's a stunning picture of a scene like "ZEBRA KILLS LION" (I won't post it because it's so stupid) but when you click on it, it's just a dumb slideshow.  Yet it has millions of views, and because of that, you're curious (when you see the thumbnail there on the side).  What's the story behind all of these?  There has to be something weird going on...has someone made a lot of money doing this?  It's gotta be something like that...it's way too stupid and successful for it to be an accident.

I'll give that a shot, Shades.

The other program I'm suspecting is itunes.  that program has a very intrusive installation and uninstallation, and I've had to reinstall it a couple of times lately.  This is exactly why I can quickly hate apple products, if only they didn't make tablets and phones the "feel" the best.  Itunes really sticks its nose in all sorts of places on your computer.

J-mac!  I like the way you think...but my wallet don't!

I'm really having some windows problems.  I think it's Comodo.  They did a pretty major upgrade a few weeks ago and that's possibly when my problems started.  Comodo's latest update changed it's look pretty significantly, that's why I remember it.  Anyway, the event log is showing these things:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
cmdGuard
discache
MpFilter
spldr
Wanarpv6

also:
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service ShellHWDetection with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{DD522ACC-F821-461A-A407-50B198B896DC}

DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service WSearch with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{7D096C5F-AC08-4F1F-BEB7-5C22C517CE39}

Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. The system administrator should review the list of libraries to ensure they are related to trusted applications. (this is regarding the file  C:\Windows\system32\guard64.dll

So I think either the problem is Comodo, or it's part of the problem.  I'll try removing/reinstalling it later this week.  The other one was the Wing FTP service possibly.  I also tried messing with some IIS or WEbdav stuff to try to get my ipad comic reader app (great app) working.   Ugh.  I always do this...I always play a little too much with things.  My curiosity is going to be the death of me, I'm sure of it.

Thanks!  I sure hope it's that easy.  I'll do that.

I'm having other odd problems.  System restore was turned off.  I tried turning it on and got an error.  A program that was working yesterday (a portable exe program) can't run today and gives me some .net errors.  I looked at my event log, saw some problems with wing ftp server (a really neat server solution I was trying out, but I just removed that), there were problems with Comodo's gaurd64.dll file.  And of course the unexpected shutdown error.  I have issues.

I swear, all this started a couple of weeks ago when I was trying to get the icecast streaming thing working.  I changed the audio settings, but I can't see why that would be the problem.  I had two sound cards, the motherboard one and my pro-audio one.  I unplugged the speaker from the motherboard one and put it on the pro-audio one.  i also changed the default sound to the pro-audio.  It seems like that's when everything started, but I've tweaked so many other things since then.

Well...this may call for a fresh Windows install.  But off to radioshack first...

I have more serious issues to deal with...BSOD all over the place.  I have some kind of weird memory, hardware, or something problem.  This all happened lately when I started experimenting around with live streaming a radio station that I want to do.  Something has gone wrong.  But hell if I know what it is.  I've installed and uninstalled dozens of programs, I've changed some hardware settings.  I have no idea.  It's always a big BSOD with a couple of seconds of dumping memory off, which I've never seen before.  Usually, a BSOD is static.  I've never had this one where it shows a couple of seconds of memory percentage dumping.  I hope it's not hardware.

I also just noticed that when I rebooted and the part which shows all the hard drives coming up...that is usually very quick, this time it had to wait several seconds to detect the each drive.  Made me think I have a motherboard problem.

@SB - ok, looks like I'm outvoted on the 8Gb vs 16Gb argument by DC folk who are currently using 16, so please disregard my earlier questioning of how advantageous it would be.  :)

Not a problem.  Knowing myself, I tend to go overboard initially anyway, so in the end, the advice was good.

If I go for 8GB, can I mix the RAM, or do I have to replace everything from scratch?

What if I just double up to 8GB?  I don't really want to do a major upgrade at this time.

I'm looking to beef up my RAM to 16GB (I currently have 4GB).  Can you guys help me choose the proper sticks to get?  I have no clue about the technologies involved, what's compatible with what, what to avoid, etc.  All of my computer specs are still here, when you guys helped me last time:

Also...I seem to be developing a bit of a soft spot for these Russian/ex-Soviet software developers.  I don't know what it is...the Delphi programming, or what...but they usually make really snappy, feature-filled applications sort of against all odds.  Most American authors or other Western authors, in order to make a living, have had to ditch their software development ventures and give in to the "man" so the shareware/freeware world has really gone south for me in the last decade.  I'm telling you, I used to LOVE those little programs that would be all over the place years ago, but that era is coming to a close.  Again, I have high hopes for Windows 8 this year, please!!!  But then again, guys like mouser/skwire/all the other cats hanging around here are keeping the ship afloat.  I'm dead-convinced that these little freeware software have more skill/features/talent poured into it than MOST of the big and very expensive corporate software I have come across in the professional world.  I keep looking for the right opportunity to bring financial success for these small time developers and steal it away from the awful Oracles and mediocre Microsofts, etc. but I haven't figured out anything really great yet.  But it's there...there's something there.

Steven, I'm feeling the same way you do.  I did purchase it because of the discount and also because I'm trying to support authors who sound like they are dedicated to customers.  (Even though I'm afraid that the future doesn't look too good for Windows shareware authors...we'll see with the new Windows market thing this year).

But yeah, it's a decent program.  I still think RightNote is king right now.  RightNote does everything really well, and feature-wise is far more mature than this new program.  Like you said, the special folder monitoring is a neat unique feature.  I like the version history for each note.  Other than that, I can't think of anything else that makes me prefer it over RightNote.

Found this one: Livefyre

Real time commenting, voting, ratings, nested replies, media inclusion, and moderation that can be accessible through online or mobile.

Login options are Facebook, Twitter, or Livefyre account.

And there is a free community version good for sites with under 2 million monthly views.

Judging from the comments here, they have a good responsive helpful support staff, too.
Nice find, app!  That might be the winner right there.  Thanks for the help.

How about Disqus?

Visitors could log in with Disqus, Google, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, OpenID, or just as a guest (with name/email)

It supports most blogging platforms and there is a js widget code for inserting on non-blog pages, which means it will work anywhere.
Looks good.  I'm worried about the pricing scheme.  I need to pay $300 a month if I want real time updating?  I don't think so.  Where these people get these prices from I have no idea.  Who pays for this??

I guess the question is, what's the easiest way for people to send me a message if they visit the website?  Email? facebook? twitter?  Also consider people who are visiting on a mobile device.

Actually I think the easiest thing would be a chatfeed where anyone can just type and have it show up.  No registration, no verifications, no login...just type and go.  Would that quickly get spammed to death?
2169
That just displays a feed. What feed would you display in it?
That's exactly what I want, i think.  I just want it to show the feeds from the most popular protocols like facebook, twitter, etc.
2170
http://zooshia.com/

Also looks pretty good.  I'll definitely give this one a shot.
2171
Good points, app.  The only thing I don't like about that friendfeed is that it's another thing for people to sign up to.  Sure, it can use your existing facebook/google account, but I'd like something with no additional signups.  I'm not such a popular guy where people are willing to sign up to give me a shot.  Any hesitation means they're just going to leave.
2172
Ah...as usual I'm overengineering this.  I think the easiest way to do this is to setup a twitter account and just display the twitter feed on the site.  Everyone has twitter, the posts are nice and short.  It should do.  Twitter also has embed code readily available.
2173
Be careful with something like that. Look over your web hosts TOS and make sure it doesn't forbid running a chat server...many don't allow it.
I don't really want a chat server...let's say I'm chatting on my computer using a universal client like miranda...I want the feed being displayed on the website.  It's not serving anything, it's just showing what my own chat is doing.

But on that note, why would they be opposed to it?
2175
Hi everyone, now I'm looking for a hopefully easy to use universal chat client to embed into a webpage.  I'd like to do a live streaming talk show (audio only for now) and I want people to be able to chat on the same page.  I'd like all the major protocols to be supported in one interface...google, aim, facebook, icq, etc. as many as possible.  Does anyone know of anything?  The website would be here:
http://tbgentertainm...m/stream/stream.html

If it turns out well, I'd like also to do a live talk show about topics dc members would be interested in as well.

OK, after some more research...I don't really want a whole chatroom embedded on the site.  I just want the chat feed to be displayed on the site.  So, let's say I'm using Miranda or some other universal client to chat, I just want the feed being sent to the website and displayed.  So it's not really interactive, it's just a display.
