Living Room / Re: I need more english knowledge
« Last post by wraith808 on August 17, 2017, 05:49 PM »
I had a woman reporting to me that had problems in English.  We were able to get her a subscription to Rosetta Stone.  She started to drastically get better, and then I suggested that they let her sign up for tutoring- not through rosetta stone, but through one of the more casual sites, where you pay for a period of time, and just talk colloquially to the person.  That accelerated her learning.  She still has problems, but she still uses both on the company's dime, and seems to be very satisfied with her progress; her self-esteem has risen drastically, as has her performance.

Ah!  I should have known that... never used the virtual desktop feature of Fences, but now that you mention it, I do remember that.  Glad you worked it out!

I've spoken English my whole life and it took me a bit of thinking to realize what they were looking for.

Yeah, same here. The first word that came to mind was 'despot', which also distracted me for a bit...

Meh, I always immediately think 'sexpot' when I see them mentioned.

Someone's mind is in the gutter!   ;) ;D 8)

Perhaps try to edit in Notepad++ or some other non-dos based editor?  You don't have to edit the file from the command line, AFAIK.

Are you going to tell us the solution?

I think he's going to wait until he's sure it's the solution before sharing it.

try to forget that and concentrate in determining the ghost process or service.
You really don't understand how troubleshooting works, do you? It's a process of elimination and lots of questions/information, not of any assumptions. Please re-read the quote below my posts...

As long as I can remember the three or more point are for a configurable desktops program. I think is from Microsoft.
What makes you think so? And what did you do to obtain them, as nobody in this thread knows them or how to enable them, and we're (nearly) all experienced Windows users

[rant]
As so often, your thread is full of fuzzy (non-)information and unrelated bits, and short on answers to questions that are asked. And yes, that bothers me, as it is very unhelpful in us trying to actually help you find a solution.
[/rant]

As said before: Check your video drivers settings and options for virtual desktop features, and, as mwb1100 suggested, remove the (probably) unused nVidia drivers from your system.

This is a bit more aggressive than I think is warranted in this particular audience.  We know that Contro is not a native English speaker, so is struggling through this.  If you can't work through this with him, it seems that a better approach for the community might be for you to ignore his threads?

Hi Sartoristudio,

Can you please disclose your affiliation with the site, and perhaps edit your post to make it a bit clearer rather than just linking to text?  Thanks!

Aren't these dots a feature of the video card driver?, possibly enabled by default? these manufacturers often throw in 'unexpected features' with minor updates, but then it should be possible to disable the feature quite easily. You probably won't find that (driver)process using process explorer, IMHO

They could be.  I guess it depends on what video card he has, and it's not obvious, which is the reason he's asking.

In Process Explorer you have a symbol on top that looks like what you see when you look through the visor of a rifle...the (infamous) cross-hair.

You can drag this symbol over the window that you have a problem with and when you release the mouse button, the process behind this window is selected in Process Explorer. That should make the "hunt" much easier.

That *might* work.  But as this is not a windowed process, it might not.  I had a similar problem of something showing up on my desktop, and it didn't work.  Just an FYI.

@Deozaan: Thanks for posting that ^^. Virtue-signalling apart, it stirred a couple of cogs in my brain.
I had belatedly donated $5 in DC Credits to @f0dder on 2014-01-01 for something that he had done in  2012   :-[  and which I am still using on an ad hoc basis - Re: DONE: "Filegrab"-like functionality integrated into the file explorer.
So I am making another donation to @f0dder - even though he is a cantankerous bugger - because (though I could be wrong. of course) that would seem to be within "the spirit" of DC.

I think "the spirit of DC" is to help out when you can/want to/are intrigued about something, and donate if you can/it helps you/it strikes your fancy.

So I think you're well within that.

In fact, there's IMO a very clear vision statement on the frontpage:

Can you please explain a bit more clear on what you try to achieve?

- Arrange your monitors within Windows?
- Make 'invisible' windows visible again after disconnecting the 6th monitor?
- Find an unknown tool that is hiding some of your windows?
- Solve an 'issue' with hotkeys that start applications on the no longer available 6th monitor?

If you look at his screenshot above, there are three dots at the bottom, right above the taskbar.  He doesn't know what these are, and they are putting functionality on his machine that he doesn't know how to use.  He just wants to find the process, and kill it.

I do appreciate this and will throw Skrommel a $5 spot for his effort.  It is not exactly what is needed.  It has to be something that is a 'one click fix' for the luddites.  If it is beyond the scope of the website or available programmers please accept my apologies.  Edge is a bonus.  Thank you for your patience and the time you invested.

So basically at this point, you need someone to convert what Skrommel did into a windows store extension and post it on Windows store?  Or is there another impediment?

That's all I posted.  And I just don't get what the perceived hostility was.  I was trying to see what was left to be done, so it could be possibly picked up by myself, or someone else.  And I wasn't even (nor I think Skrommel) looking for compensation.  What you're offering is appreciated, but a pittance compared to the hourly rate/effort put into the project.  We do it because we're interested and want to solve problems.  It seems like you're equating this with wanting to make money, when no one is on here for that.  If they were, they quickly disappear- there's no real money to be made.  It's for fun, for the challenge, and to help.  So anything being asked is under that aegis, and I asked to possibly contribute.  But why get it set up for the Windows store if that's not what you needed.  Which was the reason that the question was asked. This isn't a work for hire site.  I don't know that there have even been any agreements between people based on that, though I don't know the full extent, so maybe there were?  It's a site for software enthusiasts. When I do get money, I look at it as bonus, and a confirmation that I helped someone, not an end game.  The end game is creating something that's useful.

Neat. It reminds me of PasswordCard. Except this one has a built-in method of helping you remember your password for various places.

With that kind of support, it's a wonder that they drew back on it. There's money to be made!

You mock me ... But I want another..

Me mock?  Never!  And if it was- it was a friendly mocking :P

Truthfully, I was almost along with you for the ride.  But instead I put off getting a phone until after Windows Phone was pretty much dead.

There, but for the grace of God, go I...

The hostility is not called for.  It helps if things are communicated in advance of starting into anything difficult or time-consuming and I am sure skrommel knows that as well as tomos and others here.  If he had high expectations for the outcome he might have attempted to ascertain a clearer picture of what was sought.  Non-programmers will not always immediately grasp the concepts behind a software request.  My initial $20 stands as does the $5 for skrommel if he feels it is warranted.  I do appreciate what was done and will pass it along to those who have the interest and knowledge/skill to utilize it.

Hostility?  I was just asking the question for clarity.  If that's all that's required, I was considering looking into it.  Was being the operative word at this point.  Best of luck getting what you need.

I am gonna have to guess vodka wouldn't work. You'd need something that can burn by itself, 40% alcohol doesn't ignite unless heated up.

Well, you're actually igniting the sugar + soda from the looks of it, so wouldn't the spirits just be to fuel the reaction instead of starting it?

Are either one of the programs in any danger of idle waits for user interaction?  i.e. trying to close notepad with text in it?  Just figuring it would be a good question for whomever picks it up.

Hopefully in the CMS we'll have a space for a user maintained wiki; I think that was one of the purposes of the CMS transition.
