General Software Discussion / The definition of "bloat" - RE: Software
« Last post by Josh on February 07, 2008, 11:37 AM »
This is a topic which has confused me for some time for many many applications. Everywhere I look, be it software discussion sites, review sites, forums, etc. I see people making mention of "X Used to be light, now its bloatware". WHAT EXACTLY IS BLOATWARE? From most of the reviews I read, I see people whining that because X feature was added that THEY DONT FEEL is valuable, means that a program is suddenly bloatware. Are there certain features in certain categories which immediately classify programs as bloatware? Not to single anyone out, but when I read most of zridling's reviews on various sites he is registered, I will see him make nothing but glowing comments on an app, then 2 releases later it is moved into the bloatware category according to reviews he's posted. Zaine, if you are reading this, can you post? One of your latest reviews I read is what sparked my finally posting this topic, and I would like yours and everyone elses input on this matter.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by Josh on February 06, 2008, 11:15 AM »
I would like to add this. I have been using vista for about a year now and I have to say, I no longer feel like I have to be an OCD person to be able to organize my start menu. In fact, I dont care how its oragnized. The new built-in search feature is a god send and works BEAUTIFULLY. I type what I want and its found, all with a single key stroke. This feature alone makes vista worth the money for me as I have been far more productive.

Could this explain why most military personnel live long healthy lives to become the "Vietnam Veteran" stereotypes which tell old war stories?

General Software Discussion / Re: How many of you use encryption?
« Last post by Josh on February 06, 2008, 07:17 AM »
TrueCrypt 5.0 released:

5.0

February 5, 2008

      New features:

  • Ability to encrypt a system partition/drive (i.e. a partition/drive where Windows is installed) with pre-boot authentication (anyone who wants to gain access and use the system, read and write files, etc.,    needs to enter the correct password each time before the system starts). For more information, see the chapter System Encryption in the documentation.   (Windows Vista/XP/2003)
  • Pipelined operations increasing read/write speed by up to 100%   (Windows)
  • Mac OS X version
  • Graphical user interface for the Linux version of TrueCrypt
  • XTS mode of operation, which was designed by Phillip Rogaway in 2003 and which was recently approved as the IEEE 1619 standard for cryptographic protection of data on block-oriented storage devices. XTS is faster and more secure than LRW mode (for more information on XTS mode, see the section Modes of Operation in the documentation).
Note: New volumes created by this version of TrueCrypt can be encrypted only in XTS mode. However, volumes created by previous versions of TrueCrypt can still be mounted using this version of TrueCrypt.
  • SHA-512 hash algorithm (replacing SHA-1, which is no longer available when creating new volumes).

Note: To re-encrypt the header of an existing volume with a header key derived using HMAC-SHA-512 (PRF), select 'Volumes' > 'Set Header Key Derivation Algorithm'.

Improvements, bug fixes, and security enhancements:

  • The Linux version of TrueCrypt has been redesigned so that it will no longer be affected by changes to the Linux kernel (kernel upgrades/updates).
  • Many other minor improvements, bug fixes, and security enhancements.  (Windows and Linux)

If you are using an older version of TrueCrypt, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to this version.

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action

I've reported issues that have gone unresolved since before this thread began. I have not received any sort of response despite several follow up communications.

Is this any surprise given GemX's history of buggy applications? I am half tempted to get a refund on the 9.95 app portion I paid for (minus the trialpay versions), just as a sense that they gave me something back.

« Last post by Josh on February 02, 2008, 09:05 AM »
To all,

I will be unavailable for up to the next months time. I am currently moving on Military orders. I will make it a point to try and get into a new house as quickly as possible so that I can return to my good friends here at DC. Stay safe, keep in touch, and I will report in to mouser or wordzilla every now and then with my status.

Take it easy!

There are about 2,966,040 germs on your keyboard right now!
That's equivalent to the number of germs on 593 toilet seats.

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?

What most people fail to realize is what starts with the OS. On windows, most people have far more items that run on startup.

« Last post by Josh on January 31, 2008, 07:07 AM »
I am in the same boat as mouser. Boot time doesnt matter much to me as I do it so infrequently. When I do reboot, its about 15-20 seconds from power on to Vista login prompt and then another minute while my startup programs load. I have quite a few startup programs so I dont blame vista for a slow start. Vista on its own is pretty fast to boot.

Best E-mail Client / Fusemail - The email service that goes above and beyond
« Last post by Josh on January 27, 2008, 06:03 PM »
This post contains a review of the services offered by Fusemail

I have been trialling fusemail.com and their email hosting services for the past few weeks. I have to say that I am very impressed with the service and features offered by this provider. They are far from the cheapest email provider, the minimum charge is 120 a year due to the fact that they TYPICALLY cater to businesses, but their service given by the company shows that you "Get what you pay for". I started out with an immediate issue of syncing my IMAP accounts with their built-in IMAP sync tool. It seemed to work, however, it missed some key folders and left others as unreadable. This issue was resolved by a support ticket being opened up. They had the issue resolved and I was on my way.

About a week later I ran into another issue involving folder names containing the "&" sign. Their IMAP implementation did not like the use of this character in folder names and ended up making two of my rather important folders inaccessible. It also caused several of the sub-folders to be moved to a ghost copy of the folder. This issue was again resolved with a new support ticket being opened. The typical response time for me was less than 2 hours from ticket opening to ticket closure. This is an outstanding response time in any industry.

The account management and email controls given by their service are second to none. I tried various other email hosting companies to include tuffmail, fastmail.fm and runbox. None of these offered the ease of configuration or the options availability that fusemail did. A simple look at their account management panel shows the strength and power that is given to the client upon account creation. Their sales staff, Larry shaw is who I dealt with, is always available when you are evaluating your account to help you with any pre-purchase questions and is always willing to provide a callback when requested.

As I said above, the service charges based on the number of mailboxes required (99cents a month per mailbox) and the amount of extra space required (.99cents US per extra gigabyte). The minimum charge is 10 dollars monthly charged at either a quarterly or annual billing option. While this isn't as cheap for the person looking for cheap email hosting for their personal email accounts, it definitely provides me with the flexibility I desire for my service. I am a home user, but I have come to love being able to take full advantage of any service I sign up for. Hence, I demand that I be given full control over any aspect of any program, service, or endeavor I embark upon. Fusemail has provided me this. And despite the extra money I have to spend, I feel it is by far the best money I could ever spend on an email hosting company.

So, if you are in the market for an email provider that offers you the greatest of flexibility with an unparalleled support response time, give fusemail a try. You will be glad you did. I know I am.

He is using the webmail interface at comcast and is sticking with Pop3. Right now, my major problem is that he has folders containing email and I see no way to do a manual export of all email (ala Outlook's PST Export).

General Software Discussion / Joomla 1.5 released
« Last post by Josh on January 22, 2008, 06:26 PM »
What could be a "one upper" to wordpress, the latest release of Joomla builds upon the already solid base and adds many new features

t is with great pride that the Joomla! community announces to the world the immediate availability of Joomla! 1.5 Stable [Khepri].  As a community of contributors, we have been through celebrations and tribulations. We have had fun, and we have worked hard. We have learned from and helped one another. What started two and a half years ago with a letter to the community has grown into a great opportunity for both the Joomla! project and community to benefit from these efforts and to consider our future.

People have contributed enormous amounts of time and energy to make Joomla! 1.5 what it is today. Developers collaborated over long distances, around the clock, enthusiastically contributing to Joomla!. Hours writing code combined with intense discussions on everything from usability to extensibility have defined many developers' lives over the last two and a half years. Countless others have identified and fixed bugs along the way.  Documenters have tracked changes to help make life easier for everyone who uses or develops in Joomla! 1.5. Translators for dozens of languages have prepared language packs.  Huge amounts of time and energy have gone into event organization, team management, and infrastructure upkeep.  Our forums are overflowing with those asking and answering questions about Joomla! 1.5, helping overcome problems and reaching out to newcomers in a concerted effort to be helpful.

Our growing and vibrant open source community is innovating in many ways. The response from community members in both development [Pizza Bugs and Fun] and documentation [Doc Camp] has been both overwhelming and warming. The Google Highly Open Participation Contest energized and excited mentors and students alike, while helping solidify Joomla!'s future by involving talented young people in producing and supporting open source software.
