Yes, Curt! That should be a blazing machine! Are you going to be running 32-bit or 64-bit Vista Home Premium? Hope it's 64-bit so you can use all 4 gigs of RAM. Having said that, the 3 gig that I am running in my notebook are MORE than enough to keep me grinning when I use my computer... Let us know what you think of Vista (I know your g-f's computer is already running it and that you've played with it, but now you'll be "living" in it)!

Jesper - nice notebook  Vista has been a big surprise for me, consideirng the bad press.

I was recently given a circa 2000 Samsung Sens 820 notebook with a BIOS password that no one could remember:

PC 5:
CPU: PIII 600Mhz
RAM: 192MB SODDIMM
HD: 12 GB 4200rpm
OS: Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04)
Graphics: ATI RAGE Mobility 128, 8 MB
Soundcard: No idea!
Korean keyboard

I defeated cleared the BIOS password by disconnecting all power and unplugging the CMOS battery overnight. My next challenge was a bum install of Windows XP and what turned out to be a dead stick of RAM (when I received it, it had 2x128MB RAM - I swapped in a spare 64MB SODDIMM I had lying around). It was *supposed* to get Xubuntu, but I popped in the wrong install CD :o :-[ I'll probably uninstall Ubuntu and install Xubuntu at some point as Ubuntu is a bit slow on this configuration (no surprises there!).

Heh, heh, no... more a growing sense of fiscal responsibility, coupled with the fact that I also already own a license for Clickbook 11 that I'm not using as well  :o

As much as I like priPrinter, I'm going to stick with Fineprint 6. I already own a license and it does everything I need it to... If I didn't already have a license for this kind of application, I'd be looking very seriously at priPrinter.

Fedorov, which version are you using? The 1.5 beta starts with the same window size it had last time it was closed on my computer. Is that enough? Or do you request that even if the window was de-maximized last time it was open it should still open maximized next time?

I'm using the latest stable release (ie, not the beta) and this works for me as well - if I maximize the priPrinter window and close it, it opens maximized from then on... As for the preview pane itself, it would be nice to be able to have it shown "fit to view" or something like that as each time I run it the view defaults to 66%. Actually, looking at it, I think this is a bug because the indicator is to the left of the middle of the slider, which by my reckoning means "less than 50%". Just an observation... The mid=point is 100%; moving the slider all the way to the right is 500%...

Well stated, Chris  However, I think Brian should have balanced the negative comments with some positives about the forums that were recommended. He did ask respondents to tell him what people like about the forums in addition to soliciting what they don't like. Anyway, a generous reading of the piece is that inclusion on the list is a recommendation and the summary of what one reader dislikes simply a cautionary note. I think it's great that DC got a mention  :)

Strange, nod5. Those settings work fine on my end on both the machines that I installed the trial on (one's XP Pro Sp-3 and the other Vista Home Premium Sp-1) - that is, the job is automatically previewed.

BTW, there's an extended discussion of this issue in this thread

Well, Evernote Pro is able to recognize text in image files. It's not a pdf solution, but it is a workaround. Beyond that, Nuance's PDF Converter Pro 5 creates searchable pdfs. I don't know if the lower cost versions do this as well or not. I'm not aware of other non-Adobe solutions that do this... though I am sure that there must be others. What you're looking for is an application that will create and/or convert pdfs into "searchable" pdfs.

Wow! Brandon, tell us what you REALLY think  ;D

Thanks for sharing that, actually. At a certain level, I agree with each of your points. I've always felt that Macs push an image - image over substance. Having said that, I have been genuinely happy using OS X (10.2 and 10.4), enough to upgrade the iBook that I inherited to allow me to run 10.4 so that I can continue to use it... I want to connect it to a WPA encrypted wireless network and play with Quicksilver and see what all the fuss has been about these past four years. FWIW, I have upgraded the RAM and the HD in my parent's 20" iMac and have replaced the optical drive in my iBook and upgraded the RAM and the Harddrive and installed an AirPort card* (initial view on this last is more or less in line with yours: why the heck does it keep dropping the connection? At least it is trivial to reconnect...). Overall, I am a Windows guy out to experience Linux and OSX. So far, I've enjoyed the "ride"

*NB replacing components in the iMac is easy. the iBook is a real nightmare! Check out this link for the steps involved in upgrading the harddrive - most of them are the same for the optical drive...!

I thought it was free to move from 32bit to 64bit Vista? That you just had to contact MS and get your license key 'converted' or something along those lines?

(Probably can't upgrade the OS without a reinstall, though).

Yes, this is what I thought as well... However, I have an OEM install of 32-bit Windows, which I'm betting isn't going to help me AND I can no longer find any mention of it  >:( Maybe that upgrade offer was through the manufacturer, not MS?

Heh, heh, great cartoon, Zaine! Nice find

FWIW, I'm in learning mode at the moment as I've inherited (yet) another old notebook that I've set up with Ubuntu 8.04 and I'm playing with Vista (Home Premium) on a new notebook. I also have an iBook awaiting a new optical drive - it's going from 0S X 10.2 to 10.4 as soon as I install the drive (disks for 10.4 arrived about 10 minutes ago - Yippee!).

Finally, a rant: why the H-E-L-L doesn't M$ have a reasonable upgrade path to move from 32-bit to 64-bit versions of Vista? One of the factors contributing to my regret about buying a new notebook two months ago is that I didn't do any research about the OS, beyond making sure I wasn't saddled with Vista Home Basic. Fargin bastiches!

Whoa is right! That's pretty cool (though I must confess to not really seeing myself needing/using the feature... I do recognise, though, that it would be handy if I printed booklets)

Apple lost 13% of its value with the crash on 9/29. The market for $1000+ computers is shrinking as we speak.

It's hard to know what is going to happen with the price of computers - the market for higher end computers will shrink because people won't be able to justify the expense. OTH, the cost of sourcing materials for them and then transporting them will presumably become more expensive as the cost of fuel goes up. I suppose that other factors will be demand drying up as consumers have less money to spend... But then, labour costs in some of the countries heavily involved in the production of computer components may actually go down...

I gambled and bought a new computer on the assumption that the price was going to go up this year. I'm regretting that now, because system prices DO look to be going down. Thankfully, the price I paid is still less than the current retail price on that system...

OTH, OSX is ridiculously cheap compared to Windows. $129 gets you a DVD with the OS on it. Period. No worrying about multiple different releases (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, etc) at different price points. No "update" releases, etc. Of course, you fork this out every 1 to 3 years for point updates (10.1 => 10.2, etc.), if you want to keep up with the latest and the greatest, but each new release adds features and improves the operating system.

I'm playing with the trial now... WOW! I love the interface. I haven't figured out how to move pages around but have hardly scratched the surface. The real litmus test for me is printing powerpoints, I'll try that tonight when I get back from work. First great thing I've found: you can determine how many pages to print per page just like you select columns in word. Very flexible. Don't know if I'd actually USE that feature, but it is a night touch.

More later...
