Edvard: regarding '2': ctrl+shift+n, or something like that. It opens a new window on incognito mode ;)
Yeah, I got that, I would just like to have a shortcut in my start menu that starts it up in incognito mode.

Regarding Linux:
http://dev.chromium....d-instructions-linux
(the following quote is outlined in a red text box at the head of the page)
Note: There is no working Chromium-based browser on Linux. Although many Chromium submodules build under Linux and a few unit tests pass, all that runs is a command-line "all tests pass" executable.

Living Room / Self-destructing web message
« Last post by Edvard on September 02, 2008, 06:51 PM »
Cooool...
DestructingMessage.com is a free service which enables you to send a self-destructing message to someone. This means, once they read the message they will no longer be able to read it again after the timer has reached zero. This ensures your message is read by no one but the reader and all evidence of the message is erased. Messages are also anonymous unless you add any identifiable information to your message.

Ok, three things I want already:

1- Better bookmark management.
Just for kicks, I decided to erase all the bookmarks.
Not an easy task, try it sometime if you're bored.

2- A shortcut for "Incognito mode"
Like, a way to start it up in incognito and keep it that way for the session.
I'm not paranoid about my surfing habits, I just like cleanliness.
That, and the little spy dude next to my tab in incognito mode is kinda cool...

3- Bigger back button.
Reviled as it may have been, I have gotten used to Firefox's keyhole back/forward button and even installed it on my Linux box.
Normal button sizes just seem weird now.

Got any more?

2155
wow.
fast indeed.

I think what sold me is the whole multi-threaded architecture I read about in the comic. I've always thought that was a better way to go, and was surprised to hear that single threaded is the way browsers operate even now.

Can't wait for the linux version...

I work in a copy shop where we just got a new Xerox machine - a WorkCentre 7655.
It will scan to a searchable pdf - pretty amazing stuff.
I'd recommend going to a reputable copy place in your area and asking their prices for scanning.
Our place is charging 50 cents (US) per, but other folks might be charging less.
Other than that, I don't know of any solution besides Acrobat pro.

General Software Discussion / Re: What would your ideal Operating System be like?
« Last post by Edvard on August 15, 2008, 05:56 PM »
I remember the QNX demo. And a great article here.
BeOS employed some nice buzzwords that should be de facto part of any modern operating system: pervasive multithreading, preemptive multitasking, full memory protection, etc.
But enough nostalgia...

I fully agree with f0dder. I would add that the printing subsystem should be self-contained. One of my personal gripes about Linux is I found out that most printer functions beyond basic text and paper sizes in Linux are dictated either by the application or the widget set.
QT, I'm looking at YOU!
I was doing some work in QCad and was trying to print my drawings to American Architectural paper sizes. Guess what? There were none. Someone at the QCad forums suggested that the unsupported page sizes are "exotic" and maybe we should be satisfied with Letter or Tabloid sizes.
Excuse me? Like A0 (841 × 1189mm) isn't 'exotic', but Arch D (610 × 914mm) is?
Whatever...
After some Googling around, I found out that it was actually a component of the QT widget set (qprinter.cpp, specifically) that defined paper sizes.  I got brave and typed in some American paper sizes and tried to compile it.
No dice.
I'm still waiting for an answer back from Trolltech...

It would be much better to have a completely separate printing subsystem that all applications could communicate with.

I've often wondered what the big deal was between micro and monolithic kernels. Guess I got some reading to do...

Living Room / Re: Skimp or splurge?
« Last post by Edvard on August 13, 2008, 07:41 PM »
40hz: point taken. But I consider 20$ for a knife at least a semi-splurge. A decent IKEA knife goes for around 5$ you know ;)

I wish to file a friend-of-the-splurge brief for mousers tape splurge :) Tape, especially electrical tape, is one of the most handy things ever invented. Buy good quality stuff and buy enough to be able to have multiple rolls at various places around your house or apartment.

A general splurge rule: buy duplicates of small tools you use a lot and put in different places. That way you'll always have some close to hand and won't have to spend time searching for where you put them so often.
I second the tape rule, and up-one: get a roll of gaffer's tape with your next duct tape purchase (if you can find it...) and see if it doesn't out-purpose the silver stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love duct tape, but gaffers tape is his grown-up cousin.

Now IF they had a full-out chemically-aided Games, then that might get interesting

Do you remember the SNL skit about the steroid olympics and weightlifting.  Very funny

No, but I played a Juicer once just because my role-playing-game-fanboy-and-good-friend was so hot on Rifts being the best RPG (evar!!) and I was roped into a wednesday night session years ago...

Quite similar I'd say...

40Hz: I'm sorry if I caused confusion. I didn't mean that your post or Zaine's in themselves was causing me concern. The point I was trying to make was a fusion of your comment that discussions about OS preference often goes the way of religious convictions and Zaine's comment on what can and can't be talked about on DC. Allen summed it up nicely but I'll put it this way:

IN OTHER WORDS... Let's "walk softly" so that  OS discussions go no further into the flammable territory currently occupied by religious and political arguments, which are highly discouraged on the DC forum (and for darn good reason...).

Good-natured jabfests should be no cause for concern, nor lively discussions on technical merits (or lack thereof), but full-on flame wars are, and I have no stomach for innocent blood spilled on the shaky ground of personal opinion.

I have seen the kind of ire that App spoke of, and it is embarrassing to see it coming from fellow Linux enthusiasts who should be making better use of their time. I have also seen and felt the same from Windows enthusiasts and it feels no better.

A while ago, I wrote a (not so) epic mini-review on various virtual window/desktop apps for Windows.
Here: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2485.0
I know some things have changed since then, and maybe some new apps have popped up, and I did totally ignore apps like BossKey and VirtuaWin because of lack of a "pager" thingie (I know, there's 2 pager modules for VW but I don't like either of them...).
But check it out and see if you find anything that suits you.

*grumble* Oh fer pete's sake, another linux<>windows post :nono2:

OK, I'll bite.
Let me begin by saying if I have personally attacked anyone regarding their choice of OS, please send me a personal message and I will reply with an honest heartfelt apology. Really. Even publicly in a forum post. I have already done so on more than one occasion.

Even though the article is a bit dated, I think the principles hold true. You could have re-titled it "Mac is not Windows" re-wrote a few key parts and it would have still made sense. Heck, you could have titled it "OS/2 is not NeXT"...
Umm, maybe...

These two quotes are beginning to give me cause for concern:
from 40Hz:
Question: Why should anybody care what somebody else has to say about their choice of an OS? If you're insulting someone about that - or you're feeling insulted in return - then you're talking about religious convictions, not technology. And that will always be a "no win" exchange of opinions.
from Zaine
You had your say; I get mine. (Unless you decree what can and can't be talked about and in what ways here on DC.)
OK, time to walk a little softer here...
WAY too many times I have seen the Windows/Linux discussion in many other locations ends up taking on the characteristics of a religious holy war but lacking many of the ethical constraints that most religions demand, and we all should be very familiar with DonationCoder's policy on discussions of that nature...

I also agree with App that the Linux community is famous for being snotty at the most inopportune moments, and for that, I wish I could personally apologize for. In any argument, being right is wonderful, being wrong kinda hurts, but a bad attitude in either situation loses everytime.

I also agree with Zaine that Humphries last statement misses the mark a bit. Personally, I think it should be re-written.
I would say "If you've got the itch to try something new and unfamilar, go ahead and try Linux. Burn yourself a Live CD and have a go. You'll be a newb, that's OK, we all were at some point. Give it a good two weeks or so, a month if you're the tenacious type. Identify problems and seek solutions. Seek them as diligently as you are capable. If you can honestly say you can live with Linux more or less comfortably, then welcome to the family. We're a bit weird and obnoxious sometimes, but I'll guarantee the Sunday picnics will never be boring again. and I personally apologize for anyone who chides you for going to visit cousin Bill next door. He's got money, and I hear he's trying to marry into the family..."

If not, then toss the CD out and return blissfully to the old comforts of Windows. There are days when I don't blame you one bit.

I know a lot of forums have a hidden mode called "lofiversion" that skips the images (avatars, sigs, attachments) and special formatting which makes things a lot faster.
The neowin forums has a lofiversion: http://www.neowin.ne...fiversion/index.php/

Any others?

was it you Edvard that posted about a "game" here .. something educational, looked very like this (done by the same person even) ?? (or maybe it was Ampa)
To me it looks quite a bit like Amanita Design's Samarost (covered in a few threads here at DC) who also made Questionaut for the BBC, which I did post about..

So... yeah.
