LOL!

I was thinking: either it's an O'Reilly book and housetier is making a word play... or it's referring to the meme.

So, YA RLY.

Cobol and C... this is still being taught here, and OMG, Cobol is awful for what I saw. I try not to get that particular subject next year. C, in the other hand... I have a C program pending, and I have to program it with VI! :(

I found curious that they mention C and not Assembler.

Many central features have to be activated using the command line (e.g., replaygain!)

This is retarded.

The tagging is really slow, and the editing screen is an usability blasphemy where one has to aim at checkboxes.

This changes depending on the format. For example, Vorbis tend to be slower than most, because the format by design doesn't implement a padding block. But if it also happens with FLAC or MP3, maybe they should think in using a external library, there are some OSS options that are quite good.

Keep reporting these things, this is getting interesting. May I suggest you to do a mini review?

ok Seriously, does MS really think they are still cool? They should rename their company to macro thief. First in their vista they stole ideas from mac and they stole their search feature from Google (Google desktop), and now they are using someone else's ideas for touch technology, though at least they are giving him some credit. Time for me to go do mass research on how to use linux, and then switch to linux.

AHEM! May I remind you that all humankind advances comes from imitation and improvement? :)

Since when is google the enemy?

BTW, they gave us (participants) a remote control helicopter at the end of the day (!). How's that for a treat?

Since we bashed them in various threads around the forum. I was just kidding ;D

A helicopter?? Could you post a image? ;)

...and in an auction buys a nice thing you guys love.

So maybe you'll begin to see more sponsored results, like mouser feared some time ago.

It seems we're in the shopping season. CBS buys LastFM as reported by urlwolf, Google buys Green Border...

General Software Discussion / Re: RAID explained ?!
« Last post by Lashiec on June 01, 2007, 12:09 PM »
Btw, software raid isn't all that bad - for consumer on-board raid, lots of stuff is being done in software by drivers, and performance is still decent. It's only if you want big and really fast arrays that hardware solutions are really necessary. And if you want big arrays, you're probably doing it for a file server, that probably won't be spending CPU cycles on much else... so the hardware solution is really only if you build a weak system, or if you go all the way with battery-backed ram on the controller for safe caching :)

The problem is not performance, but security and reliability. Adaptec is not selling RAID controllers at 200 € just to make us poorer, you know.

It does not support it. The entry in the Wikipedia says that it will be supported in a future version, version 3 to be exact. That's for Parallels for Mac, not for Workstation, for this one it doesn't mention nothing. Now, you got to figure out what to do with Wikipedia information... >:D

Because NT screens are not that sexy ;D

Some grad student at mit came up with this first

Yes, that guy is also mentioned in the third page of the article, along with a demonstration video of his technology. He doesn't comment about Microsoft's invention, but at least he gets the credit. His technology seems to be different, though. The performance appears better to me than Microsoft's. And it takes less space.

The guys at MIT, by the way, are impressive. A couple of years ago I read about this other guy who created a screen that could be sprayed ON AIR! It was quite primitive, but it's truly a concept of science fiction. Unfortunately, the article didn't give any information about him or where to get some videos :(

hey reckon it will be for things like booking theatre tickets and checking in to hotels.

Another example of not talking to people any more ... before long there won't be any real people out there - just a handful of MS employees (probably robots anyway) ....

It's not that the people at those sites are exactly your talkative type. It could be also helpful at McDonald's... now that would be a good idea LOL

Han's invention, though, would fit perfectly in a living room.

Did you consider an HTPC system? You can buy one preassembled or a barebone if you plan to go DIY. Shuttle is a renowned maker, and for I can see they have good prices to boot.

I asked for recommendations some weeks ago here. Personally, I recommend my set, the Logitech LX710 more than nothing because it's the one I have, not for its quality, in fact I still have to try it :(

A Microsoft or Logitech is the best choice. Try to spend a few extra money in a decent combination, mostly because cheaper ones tend to have weak range and disconnect mysteriously from time to time.

Living Room / Re: What do you do with your old PCs?
« Last post by Lashiec on May 31, 2007, 11:51 AM »
I don't really know. My current computer is nearly retirement, as my new dual core will take his position after the exams (I'll need some quiet days to assemble and configure it), but I'm still wondering about his future. I'm selling the memory to a friend who really needs it but for the rest of the computer either I donate it to some organization or I give it to someone who could need it.

My mother had another option, that is taking the computer to our house in the country... I can't see the use in this ;D

I'll pick my jaw off the floor...

Well, with this new technology and the nice new laws USA's general attorney is proposing (particularly, the first point) we'll get a "Minority Report" future in no time, and Tom Cruise in our house in the case of the latter.

I can understand all the shots reacting to the hand movements, but how do they do the digital camera part? How do they take a shot and the next second the shot is showed in the screen?? The camera is not connected.. And then they transfer the photo to the PDA??? HOWDOTHEYTHAT???!!! Or I'm missing something (I can't watch the video with sound so...)

All the Vista and Office bashing, and Microsoft comes up with this... This is not running Mac OS X or Linux, folks. And it's impressive. I want a job at Redmond, at least to try this.

Talking about Mac, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs had an public reunion today. I can't comment on this one (again, no sound) but they could enlist a notorious free software figure (I vote for Linus Torvalds) next time, if there's one.

downloading now.. wonder what extensions will end up not working and forcing me to edit the max version by hand.. :)

That's a poor coding job on the extensions' creator part. It's as simple as 2.0.0.*. Why do they want to tie up an extension to an specific build is beyond my comprehension, as the API don't change between point updates. So silly...

« Last post by Lashiec on May 30, 2007, 12:20 PM »
So you didn't try again after you long struggle with version 4 ;)

Perhaps the main problem with Outpost is that it's turning into a all-in-one security suite, despite being primary a firewall. I don't blame Agnitum though, most security software is going this way, especially firewalls.

And with people like the ones at matousec.com saying things like this:

The purpose of a personal firewall is to set up rules that limit applications to perform actions they should not be able to do and to allow actions that are expected from them.

which is plain WRONG (if you want an application monitor, buy yourself a license of System Safety Monitor or any other HIPS) the future is not very bright.

A caching proxy would be useful in a big organization. For single users at home, I don't think it'll bring any benefit in speed. In reality, if you think about it, it's mostly like the browser cache, so basically you're duplicating efforts. It reminds of RAM disks.

Because Vorbis is the best!

Or maybe the format has something to do with it. The OGG format is better designed than the MP3 one, which it doesn't have a container to begin with. All the ID3 tags is a hack, a clever and complex one, but a hack. I suppose it could also depend on the size. Did you try with FLAC, WavPack...?

I'm eager to try the program ;)

NO WAI!

Seriously, nowadays age isn't what it used to be. For example, yesterday my mother was reading about Aung San Suu Kyi in the newspaper, and she said: "Poor girl, so young" and I said: "Mom, is nearly your age!". The photograph was made in 2004 (in Wikipedia photos she doesn't look so young), but that was only three years ago!

And then you have the same The Who, The Police, Paul Rodgers (who everyone knows had an agreement with the Devil)...

It's quite high compared to Spain

And considering that the PS3 costs 600 €, we know from where it comes the extra cost...

Rootkited (new word) or not, it probably has a rare head.
