Right now i'm just focusing on getting a nicely working skeleton of basic functionality, but which is very flexible for me to extend to do different things.. So most of the things that perry and dcm are asking bout, this program is not going to do yet. but i'm very much designing it so i can add stuff later easily.  being able to set specific options for specific monitors will definitely be one of the things i do.

All are good great but first image kinda spoils the non-partisan spirit; i might agree with you (or i might not), but it would be nicer if the first image wasn't in the collection, imho.

David,

There are DOZENS of ahk scripts on skrommel's page, both in their native ahk form and in the compiled exe form that tends to set off the antivirus alarms, a perfect page of downloads to test against:

The other thing about open sourcing your crypto algorithms is you'll have to develop a thick skin and try not to be too protective or sensitive to criticism.  In truth, i think this is one of those things where you will get more enjoyment out of the entire process if you view criticism of the algorithm as a positive thing.  I'll bet if you talk to the real crypto pros you'll find that they are probably rarely happier than when someone with some skills tries to find flaws in their work.  It will only make your code and your understanding of the work stronger.

As someone who has dabble with encryption (see mircryption) let me just chime in a bit.

First, let's say that coding encryption routines can be extremely fun, and extremely educational and intellectually stimulating.  Crush is no doubt having a great time working on this.  The mathematics of some of the encryption routines (while mostly beyond me) is beautiful.

Second, i think it pays to be humble and cautious when talking about the strength of an encryption algorithm.  As the quotes from schneier point out, even presumably strong algorithms are only presumably strong, until someone finds a weakness.

This is why i agree with f0dder's point about the open sourcing of crypto algorithms if you expect them to be used for serious application.. i think it's largely an accepted position that the best way to evaluate the strength of an algorithm is to open it up to the experts and let them try to tear it apart.  There are so many ways for something to go wrong that it really needs a lot of eyes on it if you want to trust it.

Now on the other hand, unless you are one of the top crypto people, the chances of the pros really studying your algorithm are probably slim, so i'm not sure what practical benefit their would be in open sourcing it unless you really wanted to try to get it more widely in use, but on the other hand -- i really don't think it could hurt either -- the beauty of good encryption is that it's ok to let people see the algorithm and study it.  If that helps them defeat it then the algorithm was flawed in the first place.

I have a lot of respect for the Cybernet folks, so this makes me very happy and proud.

It's the first day of the Cybernetnews.com 2008 awards and our very own humble DonationCoder.com site has just won the first place award for "Most Useful Forum".

The fact that it's an award honoring everyone on this forum as a community, makes it all the sweeter.  It's an appropriate time to say thanks to everyone here for making this a fun and interesting place to hang out.  I'm looking forward to the spending the next year with you guys and gals.

If learning about new software is as intriguing to you as it is to me then you’ll surely want to checkout the DoncationCoder forums. With 155,000+ members it’s a place any software lover will want to call home. I’ve found some great freeware apps thanks to this forum, and you’ll be amazed at how much the community is willing to help you out. I’ve even seen some people write up quick programs just to help another member.

Updated with screenshot and revised to say it works on single-monitor systems too, and changed the name to reflect that it's focused on combining quotes with images.

i advise matching keyboard+mouse company: ie get mouse+keyboard both from MS or both from Logitech.  As for corded keyboard -- don't know why you would want anything else.

Greetings doctorfrog!

A very well made case, and very sensible.

To excerpt a brief summary:

but it seems to me that this would necessitate a second scoring system, which increments by a certain amount each time a program is launched. Thus, higher scoring apps 'float' to the top.

This is another one of those features of FARR that is just not easily seen because of a combination of my failure to make options and their explanation clear and just an over-abundance of options.

But this feature was added a while ago, based on a few users like you insisting on it :)

It works, but it's not obvious how it works, and it may require tweaking.

It's a bit confusing but it works like this:
  • When you launch a program that is already in your history FARR adds a +1 to its history score (you can also manually set this history score in the History tab at any point).
  • And then it decreases scores slowly over time if you don't launch a program.
  • The two values for the ceiling and floor of this are set in the Pattern Scoring tab.
  • If you go to history tab you will actually see that the default score when an item is added to the history list on launch is 100.  But items in that list have higher scores if you have used them more frequently.  So the score there is sort of a combo of recency and frequency.
  • NOW here is the critical part: By default FARR uses this score to decide what to keep in that list but *NOT* the order in which to show them in the blank initial list display, which is PURELY listed by recency.  Which is what you don't like.
  • SO.. to get them to sort by this recency+frequency combo (which sounds like what you want), go to the Search Behavior tab, and uncheck the "Ignore History Scores" checkbox.
  • That should cause the items in that list you see initially to be sorted as you want (and remember you can manually set scores in the history list to tweak things further).

Thanks for the info jabyrdtx -- it's no doubt another damn false positive alarm on programs made with autohotkey/autoit.

I seethe with anger at these antivirus companies which are so damn lazy and incompetent that they keep doing this.

i just helped someone today and the problem was they generated a license key for the wrong program.  the license key page has different license keys for each program.

Well i'll you what a really smart thing to do would be.. and something i just keep meaning to do is:
there are places that will actually send you a replacement bios chip for your PC, already flashed for latest version, for like $20 or $30.

after seeing how badly my system got messed up after latest failed flashing attempt -- and only being able to recover it by luck, i think it would be really smart for everyone to order a spare pre-flashed bios chip for their pc ahead of time, for use in emergencies.
21096
you have 2 choices:
1) right click on the folder note and choose open/explore
2) go to the config and change it from NODE TYPE: FOLDER to NODE TYPE: COMMAND

Maybe i should add an option to show as the first or last item inside a folder node an item that will open the folder itself -- not a bad idea.

cool

all if this started when i flashed the bios a couple months ago and totally incapacitated the machine, which could only be recovered by doing a crazy hotflash of the bios back to old version.

so i'm very hesitant to muck around with things too much more.

don't want to speak to soon but the latest beta seems to be behaving better in terms of staying on top when it should, and going away when it should (during fullscreen stuff).
