By the way my friend zack has invented a game if you are more interested in pure strategy / logic board games: Crumble.

And let's not forget the game created by our own DC member Ampa, which is actually already on boardgamegeek: Monkey Dash.

I'd like to see more people on the site creating new games.

I originally posted this almost 3 years ago, and after recently spending a lot of time on the site exploring games i felt it needed a follow up post.

This is a fantastic site for anyone who wants to try to discover a new board game or read reviews, etc.  I spent a couple of hours on it researching games before settling on a couple to try, and it was invaluable.

I should say i'm not much of a game player and even less of a board or card game player but i was very curious to see if i couldn't find something fun to play with guests.

I discovered in my journeys a fun game that we used to play with my mom called Challenge Yahtzee, -- and when i saw that there was a version on ebay endorsed by jack klugman and tony randall from the Odd Couple, i knew it had to be mine.  I find this game fun because i like the non-confrontational interaction with other players:
pic140200_md.jpg

But the biggest discovery was this super super cool game called Heroscape; it just hit all the right notes in terms of ease of play, fun, variety, emotional involvement, etc.  We couldn't stop talking about how cool and fun it was.  If you have youngish kids who like dragons and stuff like that, i cannot say enough good things about how accessible and cool this game was on a lot of levels; if you just like to play with figures you'll enjoy it, if you like strategy you'll enjoy it, if you like just horsing around and having fun and not having to read 100 pages of instructions just to play a quick game, you'll enjoy it.  Here's della me and gothic playing during a new years visit; on the very first game we were just thrilled and all saying "wow that's so cool!" over and over as we learned how to play:

Heroscape1.jpg

The one failure i had in choosing games was a roleplaying card game called Munchkin, which i absolutely hated -- much too complicated and confusing, and no fun at all in my opinion.

I also want to give a plug to a cool video blog site called "Board Games With Scott", where scott reviews a great variety of video games on camera; was very useful to me in verifying that most of the cool looking games i found were just too complicated for my tastes:

instead of double clicking use the right mouse button menu to enable and disable -- does that work?
the double click action is configurable, perhaps it was changed?

Am I correct that there is no way for a user to delete his/her profile?
its correct -- but only because it creates some havoc with any posts the person my have made..  we should change it so you can delete an account if you havent posted yet.

« Last post by mouser on January 03, 2009, 10:16 PM »
it sounds like something is wrong with the docking thing.
can you try exiting, then deleting the "Last.preset.*" files in the PresetViews subdirectory and then restarting.
i think this 3rd party docking component library was updated recently to solve this bug, i will look for it.

I'd be interested in hearing what settings people end up using in the program.

I like putting a date/time thing on mine; for the format I use: %l:%M %p %A\n%B %d\n%Y
With the following configuration for count+size so that its always in a small box:

« Last post by mouser on January 02, 2009, 01:37 PM »
Our yearly "New Apps for the New Year" (NANY) event has come to a glorious conclusion.

As usual we asked the coders who hang out on our site to participate by writing and releasing a new free program on January 1st.

The participation this year was greater than ever before and there are now 34 new applications posted and summarized by Perry Mowbray on the Official NANY 2009 page.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone who participated.  And please help us spread the word about the programs -- with so many interesting tools there's sure to be something in the collection to interest everyone.

v1.35.01 - June 19, 2012

  • [Feature] Added option to choose whether the goal of the crop mode should be to shrink minimally to fit the shorter edge (leaving part of image offscreen), or fit entire image on screen.
  • [BugFix] Some computers had fonts with large linespacings which could cause mpq to oversize characters resulting in cut-off text. New code takes line spacing into account [thanks ewemoa!]

Multi Photo Quotes v1.10.01 is now up and available for download on the program's web page.

There is a 6mb version with a few lo-res sample photos, and a 60mb version with a bunch of hi-res sample photos.

There are a ton of options, but many more to come in the future.

You can make your own image and quote sets, just browse around in the MpsMedia subdirectory and you should be able to figure it all out.

Hope it's useful to someone -- let me know any bugs you find.

We had such an exciting set of entries for the 2009 NANY (New Apps for the New Year) Event!

We're giving people until the end of today (Thursday January 1st) to get up their final entries, and then summarize and make a page for the results.

A *huge* thanks to Perry Mowbray, who I think we will all agree is doing an absolutely incredible job organizing all this.

So make sure to check in tomorrow for the full report on NANY 2009.
