Agreed carol -- these things need to be punished swiftly and harshly if we are to discourage them.

In fact you could go further and say that amazon should put a giant sticker on every belkin product page for a year saying the reviews and company cannot be trusted.

Perry has indeed deserved the main price for his great work!
yes, but he didn't get any prize.. unless by that you mean the prize of being allowed to spend another month of his life working on NANY 2010 next year? In which case you are quite right.  ;D

Congratulations to all the people who participated in NANY this year.

As you all know the event is not a competition and as Perry says -- these extra prizes we scrounged up were just an attempt to send out a few random bonuses after the fact, not based on quality of submission but just to do a little spring cleaning and have some extra fun.

In fact, the only super prize (the DS209) was *originally* given to Perry (to give away on DC) as a thanks to the review he wrote a long time ago, and Perry decided we could give it away as part of our fundraiser but decided it might be funner to give it away now.

We all owe a huge thanks to Perry for doing so much behind the scenes for this year's NANY event -- it's only because of his hard work that it all went so smoothly.  As i told him, the hard part is going to come when he tries to find a hiding placing from us when next year's NANY event arrives and we go looking for him..  :P

Developer's Corner / Re: Qt now also licensed under the LGPL
« Last post by mouser on January 18, 2009, 07:19 PM »
I believe, and i'm no expert on these things, that the significant difference in moving Qt from GPL to LGPL is that you can now use the Qt library in a closed source (or whatever) application, as long as you make open source any changes you make to the Qt library itself.

In the past, under a GPL license, if you used Qt in your application, your application essentially also became entirely GPL open source.

That may not be exactly right but i think that's the basic gist of it.  Maybe others can correct anything i got wrong.

I try to avoid news for 'planned' or 'anticipated' things anyway

amen to that!

i'm sick of companies trying to double up on the press releases and publicity by announcing something once well ahead of any planned action, and then again once they "actually" do it.

Living Room / Re: Secure deletion: a single overwrite will do it
« Last post by mouser on January 18, 2009, 01:53 PM »
Nice find.. seems like we have another case of a theoretically vulnerability that for all intents and purposes is not worth worrying about..

It's probably all not just that multiple-overwrites don't gain you anything meaningful, but that a cost-benefit analysis would probably show that the risk of causing a hardware failure from it is non-trivial.

This is pretty significant news regarding QT.  It's a high-quality, actively developed set of libraries, that had until now pretty restrictive licensing terms.  This definitely makes it more feasible to use QT in projects which are wary of having all of their code open sourced.

Let's not forget that WxWidgets is also an extremely well developed cross-platform library that has long been available.  So now there are two really good choices for (C++ especially, and other) programmers wanting to develop cross platform tools.

Cool news.  I think it would be useful now to see some up to date detailed comparisons of wxWidgets vs Qt.

DesktopCoral / Re: I must be doing something wrong
« Last post by mouser on January 17, 2009, 02:55 PM »
The basic way you use desktop coral is to move the panel to one of the sides of your monitor and dock it there, and then resize it as you wish.  That is all.  You can set it transparent after you get it where you want.

DcUpdater / Re: DcUpdater Feature Requests

I'd like to try to summarize the main things that im going to work on and keep this list updated:

1. Redesigned UI:
  • Hierarchical tree of items so that plugins are grouped under main program for better organization
  • Multiple tabs for things like: Installed Programs, Available for install from site X, Specific Program Y (if you launch dcupdater from a program for example it will show on this tab)
  • A "slide" type multi-row view instead of grid view, since there is too much info for a grid to show any more
  • More info about each program instead of just name.

2. Support for beta vs stable releases
  • User should be able to choose if they want to be notified of only stable updates or every alpha and beta (per program?)

3. Better support for installing new programs
  • DcUpdater can already install new programs that it knows about for you but perhaps this can be improved.
  • Ability to be told about web pages where it can "discover" new programs available for installation.  This should make it possible for people to publish lists of installable tools that DcUpdater can check for updates on and install for you.

What else? Any innovative ideas people can think of?

Just make sure that your motherboard and windows really does show you with at least 2gb or so free in windows -- i had an issue with my motherboard and windows32bit that meant i had well under 2gb of free memory when running win32 which really bothered me.

This is pretty big news for those who do Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning research -- it opens up a huge collection of high quality papers that are now available to the public.

It's long long overdue for academic publications and conferences to have all of their papers available for free download -- and this is another great step in the journey.  Some really great stuff here.

The AAAI Library contains a number of high-quality proceedings in the field of artificial intelligence. Included in the AAAI Member’s Library are proceedings of the AAAI National Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the Innovative Application of Artificial Intelligence Conference, the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Conference, the AI Planning Systems Conference, the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology conference, and the Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society Conference, among others.

I suggest you start with the top section, the main AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and you could even read a paper i wrote in 2004.
