Nice.

I think it's even worse than your examples illustrate.  More and more i see evidence of companies and services charging fees that they KNOW are erroneous -- and it's just a matter of letting those who catch the error complain, at which point they remove the charge without issue.  Then the rest of the people who never notice.. they pay the price.

great idea.  But do you mean culture of computer *programmers* or Computer Scientists?
the latter is a pretty broad subject that you might have a hard time nailing down.  the former seems more manageable.

Living Room / Going Into Frugality Mode -- What are your Tricks and Tips
« Last post by mouser on January 26, 2009, 02:45 PM »
My friend and I used to have a term for when we were running low on money and had to be careful about what we spent it on, it was called going into "Frugality Mode".

With the global economy heading into the toilet, what are your tips for surviving a prolonged period of existence in "Frugality Mode" ?

After some emails I have received word from Twitpay that they have agreed to change their logo slightly to avoid the conflict.  It looks like the new Twitpay logo may be a bird with a dollar bill (or something similar) in his mouth instead of a coin.  It may turn out to be something different, but it seems like we came to a reasonable solution that i feel avoids any potential confusion between the two sites.  Hopefully the two mascot birds can now be friends.

i'll move this to appropriate section later.
for now -- go to advanced mode, disable auto network adapter, and select yours manually.
if you are using vista, exit and restart as an administrator.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Puzzling results

Hi i9uq9p702.

That is a hard name to pronounce!!  ;D

First, thanks for the cool post.. it's very cool to see someone breaking down the scores like this -- almost like a detective trying to solve a mystery.

The irfanview shortcut is exciting FARR because of this substring:
IrfanView - Thumbnails.lnk

Now ideally, and clearly, your mbna.rfp should have won with a highest score.. 99 times out of 100 farr would be smart enough to rank it on top.  Initially i thought the history might be what is causing it, but you said already both are in history.

I have an idea.. could you try disabling the non-contiguous search option and see if that lowers the score:

If it is that, then its a bug in that.  If it's not that then maybe i will try to reproduce it.

in vista the configuration and use aliases are stored under documents and settings.  your technique will work if you just copy the appropriate files to that location.

Anyone have any thoughts on how they would like the user interface to present and let you work with or choose between different releases of a single program (ie when there are multiple stable/beta/older releases)?

From http://techreviews.i...lication-in-windows/:

When I was planning to write about FindandRun Robot. I was wondering why would someone need it on a Windows 7 or for that matter a Windows Vista machine. I totally understand it’s need on prior versions of Windows before Windows Vista. But after I installed and started using it I was in love with this utility. Also, it’s much more advanced than Vista or Windows 7 “Search programs and files” feature.

Find And Run Robot / Re: wrong results?
« Last post by mouser on January 21, 2009, 06:24 AM »
May be it would give better results by giving a higher score to the "closiness" and the "sequentiality" of the letters. i.e. Thundirbird should have a higher ranking than TV recorder GBPVR documentation Wiki or even Bird watching

it does.

Find And Run Robot / Re: [idea] Let FARR score plugin results
« Last post by mouser on January 20, 2009, 01:50 PM »
FARR is actually quite happy to score results returned from a plugin, either entirely, or by adding its own score to a score assigned by plugin -- just a matter of how the result is returned by the plugin to farr.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Press
« Last post by mouser on January 19, 2009, 05:07 PM »
I feel like i should make a post mentioning why i think it's relevant and fun to have a thread about any "press" or mentions of the NANY 2009 programs, because if i was a new person to the site i might feel like it was a bit annoying or self-promoting to see a post like this.

Unlike a big company with advertising and marketing money -- the only way people find out about DC and the stuff that goes on here is when other sites notice or when friends tell friends about us.

As a programmer participant in the NANY event, part of the fun is the enjoyment that one receives from other people trying and liking your software.

I always feel nervous when we do something like this that it will be like a tree falling in the woods and no one noticing.. and while programming is it's own reward -- i think it's so nice when everyone involved can also get the enjoyment that comes when new people and new personalities discover the programs and enjoy them.  (it's also very nice and fun for the site in general to have new people discovering the site, especially when there introduction to the site is something as purely a celebration of software as an event like this is).

So anyway, that's why i think it's so cool when i see a program that was part of the NANY event written up, i think to myself how cool it is that someone took notice of the work that this coder put into their program, and how much more rewarding it may be to the coder to see their good work acknowledged.
