When I saw the thread title I thought you wanted instructions to build open source women :P

Interesting article - thanks.

The only cost involved is sending Baby Cody on to the next person after his visit.

If the next person is in SA you are lucky (so get canvasing for another SA member to sign up for a visit ;)) otherwise it will have to be sent overseas (preferably airmail otherwise he will get very claustrophobic - possibly for months).

General Software Discussion / Re: FinePrint vs. priPrinter
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 13, 2010, 04:53 PM »
Currently priprinter's upgrade policy is better than FinePrint.

As it stands priprinter lets you upgrade to version 3 from versions 1 and 2 at no charge. You only pay to upgrade to the Pro version which adds a couple of extra features (direct PDF generation and text redaction/high-lighting). Fineprint is pay up on every version number change and the updates aren't cheap.

They also have a nice user policy - as a single user you can install it on every machine that you use provided other users don't use it. Fineprint is one PC only (IIRC).

Both great program - I have both on my system but never paid to upgrade to the latest version of FinePrint and now find myself using priprinter all the time. For me priprinter has the edge on interface, good looks and isn't as buggy as the version of FinePrint I have installed - plus it is updated quite regularly.

Note the base layer only as I really worked up a sweat even though it was freezing.

Sorry if the ads are nothing to do with fundraising I can't understand the point of the experiment?

Strikes me that the only effects of adversing (and especially Google ads which I really dislike) are negative? So why do something that is only going to impact on potential new donators druing the month.

I don't really see an apologetic link under the ads saying 'this is just an experiment for one month' is likely to help alleviate confusion or improve the initial impression the site gives.

Re. the shop - I can see why you have done it the way you have but you have people posting in this thread (me included) who would happily buy a T-shirt for a reasonable price - hell I'd buy a few and give them away. Seems a bit perverse not to let people buy some of the items - hold back some unique items as prizes if you want but a shop which people want to buy from strike me as a great way to raise funds. If it smacks too much of commercialism then perhaps see the low price items as a small donation to the site that people want to mak ;)

Bit of a mad shop really. I know the main website says it is for superbig donors but anyone happening across the shop must wonder what the heck is going on when a T-shirt costs £100.

Maybe it would make sense to have some affordable products in the shop too for people who would like to buy merchandise.

Is it possible in the shop to hide the products that are used for gifts/rewards? Or at least hide the prices?

My 2p - most regular users will switch them off in their profile (if they haven't already) and be annoyed if that preference is ignored.

Many others won't see them because of the use of ad blockers and other filtering technologies.

The only people who will probably see them are visitors that you want to attract to the site and my personal opinion is that a site with Google ads looks more interested in revenue raising than the quality of the site.

I know you need to raise revenue to keep the site running (and food on the table) but I would guess that regular 'events' of different sorts where people can join in and have fun would be more productive.

One of my biggest objection to Google ads is that they are pig-ugly too.

Last I heard, Paypal is not considered a "bank" and is not regulated like one.

It seems to depend on the region where they are based.

PayPal in the UK briefly set up offices in the UK and the government imposed full Financial Services restrictions on them (ie. all the restrictions that banks and insuracne companies are subject to). Unsurprisingly shortly after that PayPal decamped to Luxembourg for its European operations.

Luxembourg is in the EU but as I understand it has far fewer restrictions on financial service providers.

What we really need is a campaign for financial regulation enshrined in law for companies that hold money for customers.

Someone above suggested using Google Checkout - but in what way is that any better than PayPal - presumably they are also subject to their own policies without outside regulation.

I will continue to use PayPal for small sums of money and I always withdraw all funds as soon as they are deposited and don't keep a balance in my PayPal account. If I have problems I will simply stop using PayPal as a potential way to receive payment. Actually I am considering using my Banks payment service which allows me to process credit cards directly - it is slightly more expensive but at least it is regulated in the UK and there are independent regulators who will allow appeals if you encounter problems.

Some interesting info on WikiPedia:

Bank status

In the United States, PayPal is licensed as a money transmitter on a state-by-state basis.[31] PayPal is not classified as a bank in the United States, though the company is subject to some of the rules and regulations governing the financial industry including Regulation E consumer protections and the USA PATRIOT Act.[32] On May 15, 2007, PayPal announced that it would move its European operations from the UK to Luxembourg, commencing July 2, 2007 as PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. & Cie, S.C.A.[33] This would be as a Luxembourg entity regulated as a bank by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), the Luxembourg equivalent of the FSA.[34] PayPal Luxembourg will then provide the PayPal service throughout the European Union (EU).

and

Regulation

In Europe, PayPal is registered as a bank in Luxembourg under the legal name PayPal (Europe) Sarl et Cie SCA, a company regulated centrally by the Luxembourg bank authority, the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF)[42] (note that all of the company's European accounts were transferred to the PayPal's bank in Luxembourg on July 2, 2007.[43]) Prior to this move, PayPal had been registered in the UK as Paypal (Europe) Ltd, an entity which was licensed as an Electronic Money Issuer with the UK's Financial Services Authority (FSA) from 2004. This ceased in 2007, when the company moved to Luxembourg,[44][45] however the Luxembourg entity is still regulated by the FSA, as it is an entity from the European Economic Area which conducts regulated activities in the UK.[46]

Have you installed WDS on Win7 or using the version built in? The Built in version only searches indexed folders by default but you can override that and search all folders.

General Software Discussion / Re: Questions re Windows 7 Starter on a Netbook

Was never my experience of NOD32 - the only thing that was noticeable was that scans of exe and zip files when downloaded caused a brief pause.

I am using AVAST these days on my home computer and that is light and has no issues that I have noticed.

Unless they have deliberately degraded preformanbce I can't see why running AVAST or NOD32 would have a significantly greater impact on Starter than Home Premium?

The things that will make a difference (for any software) are the amount of memory available and the hardware speeds. My personal opinion is that most versios of Windows benefit from 2Gb of RAM (XP, Vista, 7) but XP can cope best with less memory. 7 is certainly better with less memory than Vista (which constantly disk threashes on a 1Gb system).

Strewth - what a mess! Seems the simple rule with PayPal is if you are going to be successful make sure you move away before you make any real money!

I like AVAST very much and recommend it to all my home user clients.

If you prefer to pay for AV why not subscribe to NOD32 - very light on resources.

It is a good idea if general popups don't stop your workflow but if UAC pops up that should demand attention. You should rarely see UAC in an ideal worl d so it really shouldn't be an issue.

The biggest issue with Avanquest is that most of their products seem to be adopted from other companies. Updates are few and far between once they have the Avanquest badge on them and usually even minor updates cost (eg. Powerdesk 6 to 7 is an almost imperceptible upgrade - really a bug fix - and yet it was a paid upgrade). I bought and used AutoSave 2 from them years ago and there hasn't been an update in the last couple of years (even though Vista and 7 have been released) and yet they are still selling it - and it isn't as though it is bug free.

It is the standard approach of ACDSystems - if you report bugs they will always 'be fixed in the next version'.
