Living Room / Re: Favorite Sci-fi movies?

cthorpe, i tried reading Dune. it looked pretty heavy going - only got a couple of chapters in. just a bit too detailed for me. maybe i'll try again one day.

TucknDar, if time travelling is your thing then you should watch Primer. i wouldn't say it's fun unless you like having your head twisted - it's probably the most complicated time travel plot on film.

oh, yes. planet of the apes (original) has to be one of the all time classics.

oh, oh, what about...

primer (not that exciting but perhaps the best time travel movie - don't mention 'donnie darko', what an incredibly overrated piece of work that is).

in no particular order:

blade runner (when harrison ford's face isn't on screen).

2001 (is everyone else here insane, this should be in everyone top sci-fi list).

alien (until they start doing stupid things in tunnels).

THE THING (the original is insane for its day, but carpenter's makes most other sci-fi horrors look tame).

clockwork orange (funny if you don't nod off during the dull bits).

zardoz (absolutely ridiculous, sean connery in a nappy, fun).

fahrenheit 451 (some good moments but it would have been nice to see a more faithful adaptation).

matrix (can't fault the coming of the cyber christ)

thx 1138 (seemed a bit naff for a while but makes most recent sci-fi look dumb).

Le Temps du loup [Time of the Wolf] (post apocalypse how it would really be, i.e. depressing, dangerous and confusing).

terminator (i prefer 2 over 1, or did, maybe i'd think differently now).

predator (better than given credit for).

attack of the clones (ignore the romantic interludes - this is the best star wars. you are wrong if think otherwise).

stepford wives (original version - i'm still waiting for the technology to arrive - not long now).

they live (just the glasses scene).

dune (first viewing is like watching an advert for the real film, takes about 3 viewings before it gets any good in my opinion).

dark star (good for a bad film).

anyone watched 'the fountain'? what a complete and utter load of crap. i thought the 'zen-fi' space scenes were good though.

i'd also include 'forbidden planet' with 'the day the earth stood still' for classic old style sci-fi.

(i see mouser has just commented on 2001)

maybe you could provide a way for the speed of the scroll to be controlled by something that's easy and quick to adjust - something variable too. perhaps something like the position of the cursor relative to the screen (up or down).

i'm just suggesting something like this as maybe it would be quick to adjust and therefore simple to adjust the speed. perhaps it would be too difficult to control. it's kind of daft but i was thinking maybe you could put the mouse on the floor and control the speed by moving the mouse with your foot - just up and down. then it's like a foot pedal - a bit.

well, i have obviously lost my mind. i stated above that i hadn't tried the sygate firewall so i'd give it a go when i had chance.

i've just installed and quickly uninstalled it. i had tried it before and commented that it doesn't appear to work on my system - it doesn't bother to inform me about applications trying to make a connection. instead it just blocks them. pretty useless - on my machine, at least.

so, i'm sticking with the devil i know, which is the free edition of zone alarm.

Living Room / Re: cost of running a pc (in the UK)?
« Last post by nudone on March 15, 2007, 04:54 AM »
laptop screens tend to use smaller pixels - hence their ability to display higher resolutions than many larger desktop LCD screens. so it sounds like you aren't going to be happy unless you find a desktop monitor that provides really high resolutions, i.e. it has very small pixels.

i really don't know how things compare, whether it is actually possible to buy a 19" LCD with unusually high resolution or whether screens are pretty much standardised - i'm guessing they are standardised.

i know the monitor i use has 94.065 pixels per inch. laptop screens must have even more pixels per inch. cheap 22" LCDs tend to have fatter pixels - they are really stretched 19" screens.

all irrelevant information perhaps, but it might help you when searching for a better quality monitor (i hope).

edit:
i'm surprised that you can spot the pixels when viewing photographs, maybe you should just sit further away from the monitor until everything becomes slightly fuzzy  :D

the native resolution should be whatever is stated for the maximum resolution or even just the single resolution figures that they provide for specification details.

i used to warn people away from using LCDs and would always recommend a CRT instead - providing it was a decent CRT. that was a few years ago - now i do the reverse.

nowadays, from what i've seen, even cheap LCDs seem easier on the eyes than a good CRT. i admit i've worked on a cheapo LCD and it was pretty horrible - very low contrast and, well, very low everything really. but it was a couple of years old, i think even the current low end LCDs are okay now - if you aren't too demanding.

we've talked about it before on the forum and i know all about eyestrain from staring at a CRT all day long - that's a high quality CRT with high res, etc. i haven't had any such problems since switching to an LCD.

if you get an LCD with good contrast, i.e. strong whites and blacks and run it at its native resolution then i think you'll be glad to get rid of the CRT.

it sounds more interesting than i first thought - i didn't realise it transmitted the information in the way you described. and i can see how temp and humidity would be interesting things to look at sometimes.

what do you mean about the 1600 res? you can get LCD's that will do that and more or do you not want them to go above that?

anastrophe, i'll put sygate back on my machine later in the week and let you know how things go. if i get chance to do it sooner then i will try. the problem was always utorrent related - or maybe it was emule - one of those but it definitely had the same problem on other peoples machines.

EDIT:

BIG APPOLOGIES to everyone that mentioned sygate firewall - i've just realised it was the 'kerio' firewall that i'd tried and NOT sygate at all.

you can still get sygate firewall from http://www.oldversio...program.php?n=sygate it sounds like from what anastrophe has said that i shouldn't have any problem using it but i'll still not have chance to try until later in the week.

if you're not getting that right click menu then i'm guessing that your user account must be restricted - if not then there is something strange going on with your operating system.

maybe someone else will know more and suggest something.

have you tried the microsoft way http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177482

or try this method http://lifehacker.co...gram-list-192291.php

i think there is a little util already floating around the web that keeps the start menu in order - maybe it was for windows 98 or something.

thanks, 4wd, i'll try Primedius sometime this week, but it sounds like it might not exactly fit what i want to do - it sounds like it would be okay for my own personal use but not something i could recommend to 'firewall novices' (because of the cleaning the list out problem that you mentioned).

It really will depend on what you are trying to do on your machine but Sygate really didn't work well with what i was doing - and i wasn't doing anything particularly weird. similar problems were encountered on other peoples machines i know of.

but, i'm sure it's a very good firewall for a vast number of people.

Living Room / Re: Drawing with 2 mice
« Last post by nudone on March 07, 2007, 01:44 AM »
i can see how you could perhaps create a program that understood how to operate using two mice but aren't you also going to have to somehow override what the operating system does. getting it to work in a specific program like illustrator sounds even more difficult (i won't say impossible).

i've seen experimental operating systems (on a tv show) that used a mouse and a track ball at the same time. these worked independently and the user of the machine was trained to use the specially devised programs - one of which was a painting program. that was about 10 years ago - obviously the project never went anywhere.

maybe it's a simple thing to have two cursors moving independently on screen in a windows o/s - if so i also hope you succeed.

iphigenie, i'm sorry, but i haven't yet tried.

i was going to, but i sort of completely gave up altogether when i found that 'pc tools firewall plus' didn't like the rules i put in to allow utorrent through.

you'd think it obvious - state the port that utorrent uses and away you go. well, this particular firewall requires more - but what i have no idea. i don't mind trying to figure these things out but in the end i just have to think what's the point - zone alarm works so i'll just keep using it and recommending it to everyone else.
2098
great.

i think i'll download that little util also, might come in handy one day.
2099
this probably won't help but i assume you've played around with changing the settings for what the taskbar does, i.e. 'auto-hide' and 'keep the taskbar on top of other windows'.

if not, then it might be worth going through a cycle of turning the options on and off. unlikely to fix the problem but you never know.

thanks, but i'm far from it.
