DcUpdater / Re: Dcupdater problems - v1.23.01?
« Last post by mouser on February 15, 2009, 04:40 AM »
we should probably continue this discussion over email, but one thing that is important for me to know is if you've just manually put up a redirect html page, or whether you have told the webserver to send a 301 return code for an official redirect.

i ask because the downloader should follow the redirect if it gets a proper 301 status code reply from the web server.

Can you guys (and anyone else who wants to check out the new region capture features), try:
https://www.donation...nshotCaptorSetup.exe

v2.47.01 BETA - February 15th, 2009
  • Attempting to make all region and object capture modes work better on multimonitor setups; no need to activate from desired monitor.
  • Adding ability to abort region captures with escape key.
  • Trying to skip the cleared screen message which used to show on saving image.
  • [Bugfix] Trying to eliminate floating point error some were seeing on region capture.
  • [Bugfix] Main form could stay hidden even when there was a pending overwrite/cancel/save dialog trying to be shown.

working now on some long-overdue fixes to region capture (escape to cancel, full desktop selection not just current monitor) and will try to find this error as well.

well it's a great idea.
you could sort of do it and it would be a great idea for a firefox plugin, whose job it was to benchmark firefox with each plugin enabled, one at a time.  bit of a complicated plugin programming job but does seem like a cool idea.

Living Room / Re: Why do so many micropayment systems fail?
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2009, 03:06 PM »
that is a really excellent point about "divorcing pleasure from pain" -- that has to be a central element of any viable system like this.

netflix is another example of how appealing and how much people love the idea of being able to decide how much they want to spend for a subscription, and then not have to worry about how much they use, view, etc.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: "push" alternative to "copy" in context menu
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2009, 12:58 PM »
you know that working in the start menu itself is not an efficient way to work with many shortcuts -- if you simply go to the hard drive folder where the start menu is kept (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\) then you can use your favorite file explorer tool to do the kinds of things you are interested in, or move+copy bulk stuff much more easily.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: New Getting Organized Experiment?
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2009, 12:56 PM »
app,

i didn't realize you had such a bad experience with the GOE.. i knew it didn't help you but didn't realize it caused so much damage.

perhaps part of the problem was that these systems make it seem like they are right for everyone and if they don't work for you then there must be something wrong with you; and therefore they set up expectations that are unrealistic.

do you think it wouldn't have been such a bad experience if you had just gone into it thinking "let me try this idea and see if it has any value to me or not?".. or was there something inherent in just learning about or trying these approaches that threw you off your stride so dramatically.  i guess what i'm trying to get at is if you think merely learning about and trying to follow any of these approaches will somehow doing lasting damage to a person's productivity.

as many people here know (as it's been made fun of plenty of times) i have taken away some ideas from these systems and formulated by own system of index cards which i have found extremely useful.  so for me learning about these systems has been a good thing, but i never went into it expecting a miracle or expecting to slavishly follow their rules, only to survey the field.

Maybe you want something like Piky Basket?
PikyBasket lets you select files from different folders before actually pasting them all together (copy, copy, copy & then finally paste). Integrated with Windows Explorer and other popular file managers.

selected region capture - ok that's a big clue.
klk -- does the problem ever happen when doing other kinds of captures?

and to confirm -- it happens AFTER you select the region to capture and capture initiates?

I have also noticed that on the drupal forums a huge number of posts asking for help or clarification go ignored.. I'm not sure what that tells you but it's not a great sign.

What is true however, and is very impressive, is that the Drupal developers have gone to extraordinary lengths to make a system that is extensible without having to modify the core code.. Drupal uses an elaborate system of callbacks that makes it possible to modify nearly any aspect of the system using a "plugin" module.

You come to appreciate such things after working on a system like the forum software we use here (simple machines forum) where modifications and extensions are done by actually changing the core codebase -- the problem being that when the system software is updated the chance of something breaking or requiring intricate fixing is very high.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Transfer backup files or start from scratch?
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2009, 08:07 PM »
first of all, make a safe copy now of all related files so you have a good copy while you expeiment.

what you did should work fine.  uninstalling and reinstalling LBC wont mess with your own mcf node files.

now:
the .mcf file should have your nodes; the .mcp doesn't hold much, mainly just the knowledge about your .mcf file.

so start launchbar commander, the open your .mcf file.

and see if all of your nodes are there.  they should be.
launchbar commander also creates backup files so you should be able to load those too if your main .mcf got damaged somehow.

if not, email me and i can try to help more ([email protected])

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of GTAIV for PC [Ranting]
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2009, 04:41 PM »
I'm not much of a gamer but GTA is one of the very few games i actually look forward to playing, mainly because i love seeing how well they can create a living breathing place and let you go wild in it.

I haven't actually played much of GTAIV, for some reason i haven't found it all that engaging, though i do think it is absolutely beautiful and technically outstanding.  From a programming perspective it's just really impressive.  For some reason i actually enjoyed the previous edition better.

But i do love the vehicle damange details and the architecture all over the place.  I think the police are handled pretty well actually and pretty balanced.  If anything i wish they were more alert to traffic violations, just for a little bit of added realism.

As much as i have ranted against drupal from a usability standpoint, I do need to say that from a developer's standpoint it's pretty darn impressive, and i keep coming back to it when thinking about larger projects.

Given the plans for Drupal 7 it seems like they realize how bad the usability of Drupal is and are focusing on that heavily for the next major release.  That's a good sign.
