Multi Photo Quotes / Re: Scaling pictures instead of stretching
« Last post by mouser on February 26, 2009, 07:19 PM »
I believe I understand what you are asking for.
The closest you can choose right now is to tell it to preserve aspect ratio and shrink maximally, and set some borders on your monitors manually:
Screenshot - 2_26_2009 , 7_14_00 PM.png
Screenshot - 2_26_2009 , 7_12_10 PM.png

The first set of options tell the program not to do any stretching (you already found that), and to shrink the image until one of its dimensions fits completely on screen.

The second set of options manually puts a blank space border on the screen which has the indirect effect of causing less cropping (assuming the images are wider than they are tall).

What I understand you to be wanting is something that i should have implemented right away, which is to shrink images so that the entire image fits on screen in all cases (while preserving aspect ratio).  I generally prefer to crop because I don't like having varying amounts of blank space on screen which could happen if the option with this new mode, but it needs to be added.

I'm doing a bunch of updates to my programs I'll try to get this in the schedule of updates in the next few days.

UrlSnooper / Re: Can't Enter License Key
« Last post by mouser on February 26, 2009, 06:58 PM »
ok these are useful clues.

You say:
As soon as I click on the File or Help menu in URL Snooper 2, it stops responding and shuts down after a few moments.

So am I understanding that the program will actually run fine if you do not try to access the menu?

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you rename the UrlSnooper.ntv.lng file so that it can't be found by the program (perhaps the problem is a with the language translation engine)?

Living Room / Welcome to a Preview of Your Google Future.. Ads on EVERYTHING
« Last post by mouser on February 26, 2009, 09:41 AM »
The path that we are taking in the evolution of the internet seems increasingly clear.

  • Step 1 is create tons of FREE web services.
  • Of course don't be stupid enough to put ads on these things because people won't *start* using them if they see the ads!
  • Step 2 is to market the hell out of these free services -- try to establish a monopoly and cross market your other sites -- the goal is to give everything away in order to capture market share -- profit doesn't matter at this point.
  • Then once you have gathered enough users and established a userbase that has registered, etc., THEN you start flooding them with ads or fees, since they won't have an easy time migrating away once they are firmly entrenched.

I must say i'm not all that happy with this vision of our future

The business model of the web in the next decade looks like it's increasingly going to be founded on the age old concept of Bait and Switch.

From google:
If you're in the US, starting today you may notice something a bit different when you search Google News.  Last November, we announced plans to begin experimenting with ads on a number of Google properties, including news query refinements within Google search. Today, we're continuing a similar experience for users by introducing ads on Google News search-results pages in the US.

Living Room / Flash Physics Game of the Week: FWG Bridge 2
« Last post by mouser on February 26, 2009, 06:56 AM »
This is a fun physics-based bridge building game (anyone care to link to some others?).  It's also fun to watch the creatures try to cross a badly built bridge.

I had a thought.. without adding much size to dcuhelper.exe i could add a minimialist built in update check into dcuhelper.exe.

In other words, right now what dcuhelper does is if the dcupdater big utility is not installed, it opens the program web page so user can check version themself.

But it wouldnt be hard or add much size to add a really quick and dirty version check into dcuhelper.exe itself, so that it could inform the user when there is a new version and then open the program website, or do nothing if a new version is not ready.

The advantage of this is that it would be more useful to people who don't want to install the larger dcupdater tool and make it viable to use dcuhelper.exe itself as a very lightweight update checker.

DesktopCoral / Re: Multiple Monitor support request

I've also gotten a bug report from someone at Softonic who confirmed the issue with Desktop Coral not properly reserving space on the screen the first time it's run.  So that will be fixed as well and a new update is definitely coming in the next couple of days.

Developer's Corner / Paul Graham on his Hacker News website
« Last post by mouser on February 26, 2009, 04:28 AM »
Interesting essay on growing an online community, his Hacker News service.

When we launched in February 2007, weekday traffic was around 1600 daily uniques. It's since grown to around 22,000. This growth rate is a bit higher than I'd like. I'd like the site to grow, since a site that isn't growing at least slowly is probably dead. But I wouldn't want it to grow as large as Digg or Reddit—mainly because that would dilute the character of the site, but also because I don't want to spend all my time dealing with scaling.

URLSnooper doesn't use .net stuff..
i see you have nlite installed.. i wonder if that might have something to do with it.. but i've never heard of this kind of problem.  did you try copying the folder to someplace under your documents folder and try running it from there?

well you're right -- that means its not even got to the point where its saving the settings file.  very strange -- never heard of this problem before.

are you running the program under a user account that might not be able to write to the disk?

i wonder if you might try copying the UrlSnooper2 directory to a subfolder of your personal documents and try running it from there, just in case.

what kind of network adapter card do you have by the way?

i dont know if you should confound the issue of installer tool with your choice of IDE.
(personally there are a lot of us who are not happy with the MSI installer system).

sounds like what you really want is an installer which can detect if the user needs to install .net and help them do so.  i use inno and as much as i like it, its a travesty that such things are so hard to do with it.  but there must be other free install makers that can do this (and no doubt there are ways to do it using helper utilities and inno setup).

personally i think the only plausible explanation for why its so hard to detect and help users install .net is a massive conspiracy within microsoft to destroy the company from within -- because surely the only other explanation requires a level of stupidity that humans don't normally possess.

that's strange..  i don't know what could be making it crash.

try exiting and deleting the Settings.ini file in the program directory then restarting.
you might then try canceling automatic adapter detection and set it manually.

actually might take a jump at that.. was trying to get us a discount on dc, but this might make that unnesc.  i tried surfulater recently and found it quite powerful, and while its still missing a few web export options that are important to me, it might be worth jumping in now and hoping they come soon.

one thing you might consider is making COPIES of your printer, and then switching between them.
you could even use the awesome PrinterList farr plugin to quickly switch the default printer between them:
