General Software Discussion / Re: I love this click

I am running FileBox eXtender on 64-bits Win 7 Premium, with no problems
-but I have only activated it for use in dialog boxes, not in the window title bar
(I don't remember if there were any problems with such):

If anyone is planning to order Windows 8 Pro at the upgrade price of $39.99, you can get the DVD for the same price at Amazon until Oct 30.

General Software Discussion / Re: ExploitShield

Current version: 0.7 beta
This beta 0.7 expires December 1, 2012. Check back to download a new version once expired.
-ExploitShield

I have no idea if it is a useful program or not, but the report from VirusTotal is fine:

WHAT NOT TO TEST: ExploitShield blocks exploitation of vulnerabilities by shielding applications. We do not intend to replace the antivirus or security suite but rather to complement and enhance it. Therefore manually downloading and executing a PE file (EXE, DLL, etc.) is not a valid test as it is the job of the antivirus to detect malicious binaries. The only exception are maliciously crafted PDF/DOC/XLS/PPT/etc documents that do exploit vulnerabilities in the host application (Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) and which should be blocked by ExploitShield Corporate Edition upon execution.

Abandoned or not, it is still marked as being shareware.

General Software Discussion / Re: How can I batch decompile icon files?
« Last post by Curt on October 14, 2012, 05:36 PM »
Quite a number of the "icons" on Windows Vista, 7 and 8 are in fact PNG images, not ICO icons - hence maybe your differing results. For this reason you may be better off trying something special like RealWorld Icon Editor which fully supports PNG icons:

General Software Discussion / Re: Software similar to fences from stardock for w7.64

I would like to find soft similar to fences

ehh... don't you mean, you will like us to find them for you, participant Contro?

Anyway, on alternative to you can find such software, if it existed, but unfortunately for you the first sentence goes like this:

Fences is a one-of-a-kind program,
-alternativeto about Fences

-but, hey, they may not know what they are talking about, so maybe Google really can offer some alternatives?

Cathy runs fine on my 64-bits Win 7.

Maybe you should delete both the folder and the shortcut,
and begin all over from a different location?

(I was OK with grey - my preferred background on my still sometimes rather too-bright laptop screen.)
You can try DarkScreen http://fx-software.b.../03/dark-screen.html

-they have a new address: http://www.fx-softwa....co.uk/assistive.htm but still a bizarre site design! You need to scroll and scroll, and then to scroll some more, to find the file. Or you can have it here:

[attachurl=removed][/attachurl]

They also have a version with colours. But then you will first need to click "Other software" and scroll some more, not knowing what you are looking for! Really a bizarre design!

Wow, it has OCR.

I need to say that in my setup the included OCR has never given a useful result. Not even once!

Apart from that this, I am most satisfied with my Pro version.

I just use Piky Basket for all my copying/moving of files & folders.  It integrates into file managers like Windows Explorer and Cubic Explorer.
-are you running XP, or did you mean PikySuite / CopyWhiz?
PikyBasket is impossible to download anywhere, and has not been updated for Vista/7/8.
Yep, I'm on an XP machine using Piky Basket, which is now copyWhiz.  Piky Basket is/was freeware.  I don't know about the new version, but the old version is awesome.

Do you have a copy of the old installer for Piky Basket version 2 ?

... called, "Mmmm" - no joke, that's its name,

-no, it isn't, the name is MMM. And we all loved Hace MMM+, until Vista came along...
But that was many years ago. Are you running XP, BGM?
Besides, you may have skipped the previous page:

I basically stopped working on Context Menu Commander when I came across FileMenu Tools, which seems like mostly the same idea and is freeware/donationware.

If you go straight to http://www.winxdvd.c...m/giveaway/gaotd.htm you will be given both a license key AND a direct link to their own installer, so you don't have to go to giveawayoftheday at all, today. WinX is giving away one of their products quite often, but even here at DC they are all spoken well of.

Found Deals and Discounts / ASAP Utilities for Excel
« Last post by Curt on October 04, 2012, 11:53 AM »
Just saw this on gizmo's:

http://www.techsuppo...-its-better-ever.htm

This $49 Excel Add-In Is Still Available Free. And It's Better Than Ever.
Updated 3. October 2012 - 3:17 by rob.schifreen

More than a year ago, I wrote about a great collection of add-in utilities for Excel.  Since then, the program has continued to improve.  It now has more than 200,000 users in 90 countries, and boasts more than 300 new features which it adds to all versions of Excel from 2000 to 2010.  The most recent update to the system was just last week.

The program is called the ASAP Utilities.  As you can see from the screen shot below, all of its features are handily grouped together on a ribbon menu, and the dropdown shows just how feature-packed this program is.

If you use Excel, at whatever level, give this program a try.  It really does promise to make your life a whole lot easier.  It's an 8 MB download from http://www.asap-utilities.com/ and VirusTotal reports it as free of malware and viruses.

ASAP Utilities costs $49 if you use it for commercial purposes.  But for home, student and charity use, it's free ot charge.

-yes, that special 'extractor' was made before the new setup "duo" system from GOTD was introduced, so I don't think it is possible to re-install this one. But I don't know for sure.

I am not installing today's giveaway, because I got a full version of TwistedBrush_17 for free from Bits du Jour just two weeks ago. Now I wish I'd told you back then.

I guess this renders their statement from above a falsehood!

purchase TwistedBrush Pro Studio at 30% off! It doesn't get much better than this

-eh... that was almost two years ago. AND they merely said "not much better".

Their newest version now is #19. The giveaway is for version 17.

« Last post by Curt on October 03, 2012, 01:00 PM »
I #guess# Contro not is asking to be able to handle the too-long-name files other than to be able to rename them.

----------------
pathtoodeep is a weird site. I don't think it has been updated for 1½ year. Are their programs updated? $19 for the basic version may sound okay - but the same application with the lifetime rights to get support and to update-if-any-updates-ever-will-be-available is $419 !!
 :o

Long Path Tool Full Version is $37 (+ VAT), no updates, no support.

They have more bundles.

The reason I am posting about it is, that Gilisoft Ram Disk is one of the two fastest Ram disks on the market, according to Raymond.cc: http://www.raymond.c...ead-and-write-speed/

I know nothing about the other programs; I don't even know if they are Gilisoft products.

accidentally, SoftPerfect and Imdisk are the two  S L O W E S T  ram disks...! How would I know? Of course, I don't! But because of this thread, I have taken the time to read what Raymond.cc has to say about this subject, and it turns out he has a very informing TEST of 12 of the ram disks available:

http://www.raymond.c...ead-and-write-speed/

The two fastest RAM disks are both shareware:
http://www.romexsoft...amdisk/features.html
http://www.gilisoft..../product-ramdisk.htm

Some may want to test the weird interesting Bond http://bonddisc.com/ - it is something different from the others; a ram disk is merely a part of it.

But go to Raymond and read the test.

UPDATE (23 October 2012):
However, see >f0dder's tests< for different test results!
