might be nice to have it also automatically detect when there are character sets used in files that can be troublesome.

rjbull's point makes me think that, maybe the main thing this program could do is find the files whose names (including or excluding path) or too long, and then list them in an explorer-compatible window -- where one could then drag and drop them to a renamer or use F2 or normal right-click context menu to manually rename.

in other words -- the program itself wouldn't nesc. have to do anything but locate the files and present them in a way that you could use other tools to fix the names.

does seem like their could be some tricky issues though..
youd want to also put in some protection against people running this on their windows or Program Files\ directories by accident though.. shudder to think.

Most large programs for Windows PCs come packaged in installers, which guide the user through installing the program, add entries on the start menu, and provide an entry in the Add/Remove software control panel.

But there are times when you really don't want to be able to use software without installing it -- such as placing it on a usb drive and running it from a public computer or from a friend's computer.  Such install-less programs are generally called "portable."

The PortableApps suite was designed to help facilitate the use of portable applications, by making it easier for you to collect, manage, and launch sets of portable applications.  It's a cool free project.

PortableApps.com Suiteā„¢ is a complete collection of portable apps including a web browser, email client, office suite, calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client, antivirus, audio player, sudoku game, password manager, PDF reader, minesweeper clone, backup utility and integrated menu, all preconfigured to work portably. Just drop it on your portable device and you're ready to go.

Note: we've talked about portableapps.com plenty of times on the dc forum; for more info see here.

Regarding neptitude's request, one thing you could do is have an "exclusion" list, and a button that adds the current results to this exclusion list.

That way you could pick 100 files for example, then click the button to add them to exclusion list (could just be a text editable memo); then if you clicked for another 100 files you would be garanteed not get any duplicates since the first picked files are now on the exclusion list.

This can happen when i upload a new version but decide that it's too minor an update to bother updating the version number that the updater sees.

When this happens -- people who downloaded before this "silent" update do not get prompted to download and install the new update, and to them the program looks up to date.  And people who grab the new version wil see that they have a newer version than the updater knows about (if i updated the minor version #).

I've gone ahead and updated farr to new version so everyone should see it now.

thanks for reminding me of these.. as you say i've been working hard to catch up with my program todo lists and so this is a good time for me to look at these issues again.
20332
ah that's a nice idea.. maybe with some basic rules for autosuggesting new names?
20333
hmm.. i'll have to test the tray menu more then.. been concentrating on docking bar stuff, didn't realize i had effected the tray menu.
if you can figure out any clues about what causes the behavior you are talking about let me know.

hey max, thanks for your thoughtful idea -- we've been playing around with the idea of a new version of mobysaurus so the more ideas the better.

try generating a new key for mobysaurus from this page: https://www.donationcoder.com/Keys
if that still fails, then email me and i'll try to help you figure out what's wrong ([email protected]).

Delay for unhiding is now implemented (it's fixed at 250ms); i can make it adjustable later if we want.
New version is uploaded.

v1.90.02 BETA - 3/9/09
  • Added %APPDRIVE% virtual folder to list of virtual folders accepted.
  • [BugFix] The upper right corner of a bar docked to the top or right hand of screen is ignored for unhiding bars because of likelyhood of system icon buttons there -- but cursor there was also causing docks to hide which is no longer the case.
  • Added option to delay unhiding of docked bars.
  • [Bugfix] Default options for some newly created nodes could show values of last loaded node.
  • [Bugfix] Improved theme/transparent/colored options slightly (icons were looking more ragged than they should with colored backgrounds)

yeah it doesnt make much sense to combine noborder with hiding (though it can be done).
i'm glad to hear the border issue is solved.. that one plagued me for a long time, i'm very happy to have solved it.  :D

can't wait to hear some reports from beta testers to see how people like the new docking/sliding behaviors.

BETA version (not normal download link, not yet available on updater) is posted with link at top of thread.

v1.90.01 BETA - 3/9/09
  • New option for custom bottom text in tray menus (including ability to disable)
  • [BugFix] Dropping a new item onto a sliding/hidden docking bar caused it to push other windows out of the way.
  • Added -config commandline switch to open up configuration dialog at startup -- useful to correct layout problems that prevent docks from showing.
  • Added option to docks to always show tray icon -- useful for testing and hidden/sliding docks.
  • You can now trigger the normal LBC popup menu from the right-click menu of items on the dock -- especially useful in transparent background mode when there is no way to click on LBC background to get this menu.
  • [BugFix] The NOBORDER option was still leaving a thin border
  • [BugFix] The right-click context menu of items could sometimes be hidden behind normal node menu.
  • You can now ask far to completely hide the docking bar and not even show a sliver when docked (new option in the dock), or show a sliver but now with some transparency to make it less intrusive.
  • If you change icon file for a node manually (to a valid new image file), it now recognizes that you have made a change and saves it
  • Default ConfigDir.ini is now included with installation for portable use.

I'm happy to say i also fixed the sliding/hiding docks so you can now make them totally invisible when they slide/hide away until you move your mouse near the screen edge (or you can now elect to see a sliver as before, but mostly transparent so it's less annoying).

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Excessively Large Node Listing
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2009, 07:15 AM »
this is really strange..
i can't tell from the screenshots.. is the oversized menu a listing of files in a disk directory -- or is it showing child nodes configured in the LBC tree.

if the lattter, can you send me your .mcf file and i can try to reproduce and fix it. ([email protected])

can you try a different prefix and see if it works?
some characters are used by farr for predefined things: / \ + -
