General Software Discussion / Windows 8 toolbox, freeware
« Last post by Curt on November 07, 2012, 10:38 AM »
I don't have Win 8, so I can't say for sure if this app is any good,
to me it looks like an app for a smart phone, but I found it under 'desktop tools':

http://downloads.pca...box-for-windows-8-10

System & Desktop Tools > Toolbox for Windows 8 1.0

If you're frustrated by the way Windows 8 limits you to viewing just one or two Modern UI apps at one time, then Toolbox for Windows may be able to help: it provides 9 built-in productivity tools which you can arrange or organise as you like.

You get a browser, for instance, a Facebook client and weather app. A Notifier warns you of upcoming events; Doodle is a very simple drawing tool; there's a voice notes applet and unit conversion tool, and you get a clock and calculator thrown in for good measure.

And what really matters is you don't just have to have one of these active on the screen at a time. You can have two, three, four, five, six maybe, arranged more or less as you like (although they can't overlap), and Toolbox can even save these layouts (which it calls "toolsets") for easy access later.

Sample toolsets on offer to help you get started include "Brainstorming", for instance, which loads the browser, Voice Notes and Doodle apps. "World Travel" loads separate weather and clock apps for Seattle, Brooklyn and Berlin, so you can see the current time and conditions in each place all on one screen. While "In the News" opens four browser windows, each with their own custom news search.

And of course you're free to either customise these layouts, swapping one app for another, customising the details of each one, or create entirely new toolsets of your own.

There are also some issues here. The apps are generally fairly basic, for instance, and it really needs a text editor. Toolbox for Windows 8 does offer far more flexibility in your app layout than Microsoft managed, though, and that alone makes the app an essential download.

Verdict:

Toolbox for Windows 8 provides an easy way to view and access multiple apps on your screen, all at the same time.

when you try to paste a folder in a directory where another folder with the same name exists, WinOS offers you to either cancel pasting, or replace the folder

-does it really? I am surprised. On my Win 7 it will always first ask if I want to merge the two folders. Maybe I have had TeraCopy Pro installed for so long that I no longer can remember if a feature came from TeraCopy or from Windows. Thanks for "enlightening"...

... I don't do GAOTD anymore.  Perhaps that was incorrect, but the other limitations are, and I've been burned by them too many times.  Get used to using a product, then your computer crashes.  Or you reinstall the OS.  Or you get a new computer.  Sorry, you can't use it anymore without buying.

-sorry, but my English is far too limited to make it possible for me to express accurately what I think of your whining. GOTD is not a gift-shop.

sorry, but my favourite just lost an important match...  :-[

BTW: I don't like EverDesk. The words about storing emails in your normal folders, are not true at all. The emails are stored somewhere hidden, and the folders are only visible inside EverDesk - i.e. Your'e meant to use EverDesk as a filemanager! I am not going to use this one.

Unfortunately, this Giveaway got hijacked early on when someone posted the comment that it doesn't work with Gmail. It actually does!
However, from that point on, people just kept repeating the mantra "piece of rubbish" without even trying it for themselves. I see the same thing happened in this forum. I hope GAOTD gives it another chance.

I have just collected my gmail post via EverDesk; no problems at all.  :)

The more expensive google version just offers a lot more of features than the standard version. That's All, Folks!

But by now you have all lost the chance to get EverDesk for free. Nelsonish Haw haw!  :P

General Software Discussion / Windows 8 start button + menu: €5
« Last post by Curt on October 26, 2012, 02:14 AM »
http://www.win8starter.com
-they have both a free and a €5 version

http://www.engelmann.../eng/news.php?id=420

Windows 8: We want our start button back!

Windows 8 redoes everything. But many users hardly believe their eyes: the start button on the task bar has disappeared. And a start menu cannot be found anymore. With all due appreciation for innovations: that won't do! The Windows-8 software Win8Starter therefore restores the old status quo and guarantees that the users of Windows 8 can start their daily PC-routine as usual.

In short:

- New app: Win8Starter
- Special software for Windows 8
- Retrieves start button and start menu
- Lists all the installed programs
- Grants access to control panel, printer etc.
- Full text search with intelligent pre-search
- Fast shut down of Windows 8
- Freeware version available
- Price: 4.99 Euro
- Link: http://www.win8starter.com
-engelmann
Some of the most important Win8Starter functions
  •    The familiar start button and a start menu are available again on the Windows 8 desktop!
  •    Like in the past: Expand your Win8Starter menu easily per "Drag & Drop" by your own program links.
  •    List of most frequently applied programs and functions. All program entries can be moved and arranged anew.
  •    Also included: Your familiar user folders and the direct links to system folder and –functions like ‘Documents‘, ‘My Pictures‘, ‘My Music‘ ‚ ‘Computer‘, ‘Control Panel‘ and ‘Printers and Devices’.
  •    No complicated switch-off of Windows 8! Select as usual and directly via the start menu between the options like ‘Shut down‘, ‘Lock‘ and ‘Restart‘.
  •    Lists all the installed programs and all the applications available under Windows 8
  •    All the programs and files that the user requires become faster and more directly accessible!
  •    All functions can be adjusted conveniently via the Win8Starter settings dialogue, among them the fade-in and fade-out of start menu buttons! The dialogue offers nearly all the settings options that you know from older Windows versions.
  •    Full text search with intelligent pre-search, which in most cases shows the results under the installed programs and documents when entering a term.
  •    Furthermore, (compared to Windows 7 start menu) you can add the following useful Windows programs to the button bar: Calculator, Editor, Paint, Task manager, Registry Editor, CMD, Adaptive, System information, System configuration, Explorer and Remote Desktop connection.
  •    Win8Starter is no hack! Win8Starter runs as separate program instance; no system files or registry entries are configured, deleted or changed.
  •    Uniform look: Win8Starter automatically adjusts to the set window color of Windows 8.
  •    Available languages: English, German. More coming soon.

Restrictions of the free version:
no settings; no automatic adjustment of menu color; no possibility to add your own shortcuts.

I am testing it now, but my situation has made me a lukewarm tester, because I have made it a habit to read my emails online, for max safety.

are you still running XP? BitLocker Drive Encryption was introduced with Vista Premium Ultimate, and 'To Go' came with Win 7. You may want to check out Bitlocker Reader: http://www.microsoft...etails.aspx?id=24303

-------------

A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a microchip that is built into a computer. It is used to store cryptographic information, such as encryption keys. Information stored on the TPM can be more secure from external software attacks and physical theft.

BitLocker uses the TPM to help protect the Windows operating system and user data and helps to ensure that a computer is not tampered with, even if it is left unattended, lost, or stolen.

BitLocker can also be used without a TPM. To use BitLocker on a computer without a TPM, you must change the default behavior of the BitLocker setup wizard by using Group Policy, or configure BitLocker by using a script. When BitLocker is used without a TPM, the required encryption keys are stored on a USB flash drive that must be presented to unlock the data stored on a volume.

-significant difference between a couple of SoftPerfect's parameters; i.e. between your measurement and Raymond's. Do you have any idea as to why? Regardless of the reason, it is pleasing to see that this freeware did much better (in particular in two of the tests), than I first quoted it to be able to.

-my speed is 25mbps, but the original picture took so long to open, that I already was scrolling past it, thinking it probably wasn't a full sized picture.

As you said, my compressed version of your original is not looking very good. I really would like to have some fast, affordable desktop alternative to Picasa's image compressor; I think it is impressive how much they can compress a picture and still have it looking good.

If you go to http://imageshack-up...oftonic.com/download and scoll all halfway down, you will see a small print saying "Alternative ImageShack Uploader download"; it is ImageShackUploader-2.2.0.msi

I am not sure, but I think it has been almost 3 years since the program last was updated...

Version 2.2 is here, and the bug has been worked around, so I am finally able to test the program. My first impression is that it launches weirdly slow, but that may be because of the many templates included. Also, the GUI is surprisingly simple; is this really all it takes?

Anyway, the price is less than a dollar, so shut up and smile!  :)

I am running FileBox eXtender on 64-bits Win 7 Premium, with no problems
-but I have only activated it in dialog boxes, not in the window title bar
does the feature Contro mentions work there Curt? (I think it might work for some apps, cause I'm caught off-guard by it occasionally, but it doesnt work in the few apps I just quickly tested).

-tomos' post forced me to read the initial post more carefully than the first time... No, FileBox eXtender on 64-bits Win 7 cannot do what Contro wants them to do. I didn't know, because I never used this particular feature, on XP or Vista.

-------------------------

Ouwwww  Curts take a look at this please. I am confused...
(pictures)
it's not the same.

-they are the same. FbX on XP, and FbX on W7. The exact same boxes.
