Oh, my, someone is spamming the forum with smileys and scrolling acronyms. Moderator!

A bit ambitious, but I'm currently exploring the art of brickfilming (making films with LEGO minifigs), and that would certainly be a pretty cool and inexpensive way to shoot this "fight" :D

Cool! Michel Gondry is a bit out of DC's economical reach, so you have to shoot this spinoff of The White Stripes hit "Fell in Love with FARR" :D

Since mouser started this thread, I thought that the only possible movie was an animated one, done in Flash. Now app post tells me that the movie is screaming "Rover vs. Cody" from the start. Besides, you could do things in animation not possible with real actors, at least with your budget :). I can see Cody flashing around in this upcoming blockbuster ;)

Totally off-topic and harsh, but are the Enso guys getting stupid day by day? Did they try IE 7 lately? And Quick Tabs?

And CCleaner is more customizable, albeit less secure than CleanUP! (using the default settings that came with the program)

Now you're recommending a really really brilliant game. I advise everyone to play it, at least a little. You won't be disappointed. This is an old-school action/platform game at its finest. It wasn't cheered all over the web for nothing. What are you reading? Go play the game, dammit! ;)

Not really. As you can see, dsCrypt accept both methods.

You hit the jackpot then :D. Dariusz Stanislawek has all these tiny programs, with a bunch of them focused in file encryption. All of them are portable, they use encryption standards, and they're recommended by people like Gizmo. I tried most of them in the past, and they worked like a charm. The only problem is choosing one, so pick your poison, but I'd go for dsCrypt, which uses AES, and comes both in GUI and commandline versions.

D'oh! I had the confidence that Dependency Walker could handle 16-bit software :-[

So, you only have the Virtual PC option left... unless you didn't try the "Compatibility" tab in the executable "Properties" page (forgot about that).
2035
I don't have much experience running 16-bit applications in Windows, but you could try to run the software under Dependency Walker. To do this, install the program (ZIP file, so it's quite clean), and select "Profile -> Start profiling", select with the executable of the program and let it run. You could also check all the boxes if you wish. At least, the software would determine if something is missing or not.

And, as always, you have Virtual PC :D

Yes, I seemed to suggest it, because I didn't try it. If I had some more information about the technologies used by the suite, I could give it the OK, but this is not the case. So if you decide to take the plunge and install it again, tell us how it goes this time.

BTW, remember that antivirus protection is not realtime scanners all the time. Both Kaspersky and ESET (this one is still in BETA phase) have their own online scanners (ActiveX based, so be sure to use IE7 for that for maximum protection).

I had that mouse (the MX-Revolution) for about a month. Then I got a little pissed that the frigging Logitech drivers kept losing my custom button assignments and dropped it from a little too high, it broke.

You could have dropped it this way, then ;D. Tell me how do you like the scrolling-switch experience ;)

What could you do with Ctrl+Scroll ??  - because I can do nothing! What feature has been / should be / are connected to Ctrl+Scroll?

Try it on IE 7. You'll see superboyac closer than before ;D. I'm sure the zoom function works in most applications like that.

I still don't get your problems (of almost all posters) with smooth scrolling. I stop where I want to stop, using every navigation method. Who knows? Maybe I have super perception power or something :D

And what's up with Logitech drivers as well? Mine work like a charm, no slowdowns and not a single problem in three weeks (since I installed them). I'm confused

And talking about Logitech, how about their new Wii-like mouse?

EDIT: D'oh! app beat me by a few minutes!
2038
Em, as always, I'll go against the current. During quite some time I was using normal scrolling because I thought that the smooth kind was a bit awkward in Firefox. When I switched to Opera, though, I began to use the smooth scrolling again, and I re-enabled it in Firefox. I don't know what was going in my head at the time, but now I think that smooth scrolling is better than the fixed one. The only difference is the graphical effect, but I think the flow control is the same, and the text is easy to read in both types. I mean, who reads text while the screen is scrolling?

I should mention that I switch back and forth between the mouse wheel, Up/Down keys and Pg Up/Pg Down keys depending on my mood ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Guy Tries Ubuntu

Disregard this, the poor guy got digged :P

Quite digged should I say... now I know what kind of article should I write if I create a blog ;)

Personally, I'm not sharing your opinions in the matter... these kind of switching experiences are starting to wear out, and they don't add too much to the Linux testing stories. If at least they took their time to test another Linux distros, it would be a bit more original (and possibly helpful), but everyone is restricting themselves to Ubuntu...

...unlike Zaine, now that was a truly interesting read. BTW, did you compile a list with the 10 reasons for not switching to Linux?

Installing .NET Framework (version 1.1, with 2.0 and 3.0 it's irrelevant) also creates a new account called "ASP.NET something" that forces the showing of the login screen. You disable it in "System Administration" (or whatever is called that applet in English XP), and you're set. This is on XP Professional, BTW. Not sure about Home Edition. Apart from that, I've never experienced something like the thing you mention.

General Software Discussion / Re: djvu: an alternative to scanned pdfs?

As always, Wikipedia sheds some light on the matter. For your PhD papers, doesn't seem to bring much advantage, but for magazines it could be great, and considering the size of some digital magazines, I'll give it my vote. The problem is that, although the format is a free implementation, the available options for a free encoder are not exactly "glamorous" (command-line based tools) and they produce worst results than the commercial options.

Now my dream is being capable of digitalize my entire collection, so I can save some space in the shelves :-*

mouser, I could swap you with my medium brother, and no one will notice the difference :D

General Software Discussion / Re: old software + dual core = ???
« Last post by Lashiec on July 14, 2007, 09:18 AM »
Of course it can be improved... if you have a Intel-like lab at your house ;D

I'm afraid the only thing you can do is buy a new processor with a new motherboard as well. I think you don't need a new PC. Bah, until the Core 2 Duo, the entire Intel lineup of processors was terrible.

wreckedcarzz, lower GHz doesn't have to do anything with performance. The improvements in other areas make the dual cores more powerful than their single core counterparts (unless you bought a Pentium D, of course).

I should mention that although PR departments in big companies are full of liars, some of the blame should be put on the people for believing downright lies (that's what all ads are about). Sometimes it's because of simple ignorance, but most it's caused by lack of time to properly weight all the alternatives. Media should be doing this job, but they need money to survive, and they lost objectivism time ago. Individuals on the Internet have to cover this hole, but unlike the people around DC, some of them are not trustable anymore. Consumer organizations are also a good, objective group (at least in Spain).

But what do you expect considering the people in charge of everything are being taught the wrong things? The first thing they taught me about economics is that companies pursue the ultimate objective of making the best products of the market. The teacher almost kicked me out of the class, because I was laughing so hard :-[

Good opinions, everyone. My rhetoric can't compete with your well-thought opinions. And to think we are (theoretically) just a bunch of software fanatics ;D

Because it's free, and it doesn't suffer from the update problems that are plaguing AntiVir. I personally use avast!, but AVG is also a good option, a bit heavy on resources, but it's not Norton (thank God).

And it's not exactly the king of positives.

Living Room / Re: Why is the 'N' key always the first to go?
« Last post by Lashiec on July 13, 2007, 03:40 PM »
In my case, the keys that started failing were the 'Z', the 'X' and 'Return', sorted from sooner to later.

Zaine, don't complain too much. In my Logitech, the Function keys are really small (which is a nuisance when working with xplorer²) and I don't want to talk about the 'Break' or the 'Supr' ('Delete') keys...

Hey, what the hell is happening in Germany? Could you actually use your own computer at all, or are they also planning to restrict that? You were not kidding that this is turning into a police state.

On a side note, it seems that Martin Varsavsky is always getting in problems with his enterprises. Oh, and I see creationism is also reaching there. w00t!

Real Life Docoto Defense, folks. Is the game story going to be inspired on the development of this deadly encounter?

Well, I encountered a brazilian blog that seems to shed some light onto the situation. I'll try to translate it

2 employees working at the USA got recently infected with that virus, a Trojan Horse called SHeur.AFJ. Both of them found the infection using AVG.

And then, after some more chitchat (basically saying what you have commented), he posts this link to other blog. Pretty strange this one if you ask me...

Other of the links of Google it's also quite creepy. Is this a tech meme? A joke? A real trojan? And AVG doesn't list anything in its page...

P.S.: João, if my translation is wrong, feel free to correct ;)

EDIT1: Forget about those two last links. It's a bunch of bastards playing with Google Trends results during a given time... Good thing to redirect traffic to your pathetic site. <paranoid mode>Maybe they created the virus to do that</paranoid mode>

EDIT2: Some corrections
