Hi,

the Firefox folks invented a Damn Cool Thing (TM): the "Don't load tabs until selected" option (http://support.mozil...kb/Session%20Restore):

Tip: If you want to speed up the startup, check Don't load tabs until selected so that only the last selected tab is loaded.

Works like a charm, love it! Is there a way to get this behaviour in Chrome, too? I couldn't find an option, and neither an extension for that. :(
202
Yes, totally love it so far!

Nice feature is sending notes over a network.
...to spam stuff on unsuspecting colleagues' desktops?  :D
203
;D Nevermind! If you'd prefer to not get this straight, please feel free to ignore us.

What I mean is ensuring that when you are selecting various successive quotes from someone, it is tedious in the extreme to get the quote string into the quote box as per example following:
quote author=J-Mac link=topic=28656.msg268534#msg268534 date=1321732797
Hmm.... "get the quote string into the quote box"? I can't follow. :) When you hit the quote button, it's already in the box, no?

So you could just use copy/cut and paste to edit it from
[ long quote string ]
quoted text
[ / quote ]

to
[ long quote string ]
quoted text part I
[ / quote ]
your reply part I
[ long quote string ]
quoted text part II
[ / quote ]
your reply part II

I have the vague feeling that you are making it more complicated than it needs to be, but I might be totally wrong!  :D
205
@brotherS: Yes, sorry.
I was just trying to reply quickly and work around the constipated quoting system on this Board.
For expediency, I'd probably do similarly under similar circumstances in future.
Hmm... "constipated quoting system"? Not sure what you mean, always worked flawlessly for me.

Maybe you get slowed down by using the buttons in the editing mode? If needed, I only use copy and paste to chop up quotes in smaller portions.

If you have the time and interest, there's a wiki comparison website at:
http://www.wikimatrix.org/
I was wondering why you mentioned "time" until I tried their (pretty cool) Wiki Choice Wizard:

Thats it!

Okay. You want some installable software with is Free and Open Source.

The following 95 Wikis match your criteria:

Anwiki, Banana Dance, bitweaver, BlueSpice, BoltWire, BusinessWiki, ButorWiki, CanvasWiki, Corendal Wiki, Daisy, DokuWiki, ErfurtWiki, FlexWiki, Foswiki, Friki, Gazest, GeboGebo, GeniusWiki, giewiki, Giki, Git-Wiki, gitit, GWiki, Hatta, IkeWiki, ikiwiki, iKnow - a tiny wiki, Instiki, Jacwiki, JAMWiki, JaWiki, JOTWiki, JSPWiki, KeheiWiki, KeiSpade, KWikiKWiki, LionWiki, Luminotes, LunaWiki, MediaWiki, MicKI, Midgard Wiki, MindTouch, miniWiki, MoinMoin, MojoMojo, MoniWiki, Oddmuse, OpenWikiNG, PageWork, Personal PPC Wiki, PhpWiki, Pier, Pimki, PmWiki, PodWiki, ProntoWiki, ProWiki, PukiWiki, Riki, ScrewTurn Wiki, SMW plus, Sputnik, SubWiki, Sycamore, TiddlyWiki, Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware, TracWiki, Triki-Wiki, TWiki, UniWakka, UseMod, VQWiki, WackoWiki, Wagn, Wala Wiki, Wicked, Wiclear, WiGit, Wikepage, Wiki CSharp .NET, Wiki on a Stick, Wiki-Toolkit, WikiASP, WikiCrowd, Wikidot, WikiNi, WikiSH, WikkaWiki, WikyBlog, wxWikiServer, XoWiki, XWiki, yawiki and Zwiki
95!!! :o :D

Guess I'll use TiddlyWiki. It's ...
  • in that list
  • free
  • well supported, e.g. @ http://groups.google...oup/TiddlyWiki?pli=1 (wow, 55218 messages)
  • completely contained in ONE html file (so I can use it on a mobile computer with ease) and
  • probably rather future-proof because of the high amount of people using it

Thanks to everybody who posted suggestions! :)

Annoyances? I LOVE GMAIL! :D (But I guess you guys are talking about this "Switch to the new look" popup in GMail that's tempting me to click it for a week now, so far without any success)

My responses in bold following your comment text:
They've upgraded all their UI's across their services (YouTube really blows now).
...
Sure, you can have the new HD themes, but jeez those are annoying.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Well, YouTube is arguably the only decent Google interface now, but there's still the bad ergonomics, and all that white which makes you reach for a pair of snow-goggles - all of which is definitely breaking some cardinal rules for good layout design. You could put that down to ignorance, I suppose - they could make bigger mistakes - e.g., Buzz, Wave...     ;)

____________________
I do hate that the text buttons were replaced with icons. At least give ME the choice! Also, the bottom row of REPLY/FORWARD/DELETE buttons of each email was removed. So I created a better keyboard shortcut for deletion (at https://mail.google..../#settings/shortcuts).
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Yes, I can't understand them mucking about with the buttons/text like that - and that's just more breaking some cardinal rules for good layout design.
By the way, re those missing REPLY/FORWARD/DELETE buttons: I presume that you know that REPLY/FORWARD are now in the reply text field?
But the missing DELETE - that's another mistake IMHO. Even though I don't usually use it, it was handy (good ergonomics). I would usually use the standard "#" key (i.e., Shift+3 key combo) for DELETE anyway.

For increased readability you might want to split up the quoted text instead and reply regularly, it's almost as quick. :)

since I'm now following a keep-it-if-you-don't-miss-anything approach
Ancient American proverb say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..."  :)
Hehe... yeah, but there's still a big difference between "settling for what's not broken" and my keep-it-if-you-don't-miss-anything approach. Most PC users I met (who are not *that* skilled on average) use a program because they somehow ended up with it. They might dislike it or miss features, but don't think of searching for a better solution because at least "it works".

I'm also too lazy to migrate all my important entries from the Ditto database
I presume you could do that by running both programs at the same time, though you'd still have to do some work.  Also, don't overlook Ethervane Echo's ability to bulk import clips.
Interesting... but I would probably still have to set all my "never auto-delete" entries to "never auto-delete" (or whatever it's called there) in Ethervane Echo. ;)

Stickies is so cool!

You can add skins, and there are hundreds to pick from! Wow. For now I added the "H12B Stickies" skin from Cynthia Grantz:

Also, I saw that there's an old ClifNotes review of the 2008 Stickies.

I ended up with Stickies. Really positively surprised me... what a great little program! I love to be able to put some stickies to sleep for a day or two. Very neat how many little things have been taken care of to enhance the user's experience.

I understood what Samurize is about, I just have no need for widgets. :)

I used Google again to look for alternatives and am now trying http://www.tiddlywiki.com/ - seems to be most easy of 'em all to install, because you basically just - locally - edit the wiki, which is a rather simple html file in your browser. No need to install Apache first.

Its concept is quite different from Wikipedia, so let's see if I can get used to it.  :-[

Hi,

I need to organize a lot of (simple) text in a way where navigating within one document won't becomes a mess anymore. Scrolling up and down and just using the search to jump around doesn't work well here (>2000 lines of text) anymore. ;)

If I recall correctly I once read about an approach where you can add internal 'hyperlinks' in a simple text editor: like adding an overview somewhere in the file with simple links that jump to a given paragraph. And next to that paragraph you can add a link back to the overview.

Any ideas? I still need to be able to update the text easily, so creating a PDF won't work for example. Since this solution has to work offline, would some simple kind of local wiki work? (I just recalled that in wikipedia you could simply use "== XYZ ==" to create such links (as headlines).) Which wiki is free and easy to install, easy to use? The only feature I probably need is an ability to adjust the font size (in the editor and when viewing the result).

Wow!  :-* Thanks to all of you for this wealth of information.

StickySorter (http://www.officelab...r/Pages/default.aspx) impressed me because of the flexibility. In a way it could be used as a *GTD approach* when you use groups of stickies as lists, each sticky becoming a task on that 'list'. (I love when software comes with a nice video, like on http://www.officelab...r/Pages/default.aspx: "the many ways you can capture, organize, and display your notes with Sticky Sorter")

Memo (http://www.autohotke.../~Drugwash/misc.html) looks interesting too as a minimalistic alternative, will try it too.

Stickies (http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/) is free too, and according to the screenshots at http://www.zhornsoft....uk/stickies/ss.html it has an option to send stickies to sleep for a period of time, which would be helpful for me.

Both Samurize and Notezilla seem to be 'too big' for my current needs, and todo.txt doesn't resonate for some reason.

Thanks for the pointer! His main reasons in that thread for leaving Ditto behind don't bother me though. And since I'm now following a keep-it-if-you-don't-miss-anything approach (vs. the try-it-if-it-sounds-cool approach in earlier years 8) ) to software I'll stick with Ditto, at least for the time being.

I'm also too lazy to migrate all my important entries from the Ditto database.  :D

Hi,

I tried several approaches to keeping notes visible on the desktop(*) in the past, but none really worked for me. The best so far is keeping different win32pad (a lightweight txt editor) windows on my second screen and moving them around as needed, but that's not perfect because when Windows crashes I lose them all (so I have to always save them to the clipboard (where I use Ditto as a clipboard extender, see https://www.donation...index.php?topic=9013). Also, once I reach 10 opened editor windows, it gets messy (and probably isn't so lightweight anymore).

I'm sure there MUST be a better way - I just haven't found it yet... any ideas?

(*)my brain likes visual reminders, so seeing the notes (or at least the most important ones) works better than not seeing them hidden away somewhere... and yes, I wonder how to integrate this into a GTD (see http://en.wikipedia..../Getting_Things_Done) system I plan to set up in 2012

Just thought I'd update this thread. :) I've been using Ditto for at least a year now (prob. more), and LOVE IT! I tested a few clipboard extenders over the years, and before Ditto I used ClipX (which was pretty cool too, but had some flaws, mostly stopping functioning properly when I would not reboot Windows every few days... needing to restart ClipX manually to make it work again).

Ditto has lots of features, my fav. one being that you can easily set a clipboard entry to "never auto-delete", so over time Ditto can serve you with the stuff you need again and again - ever there's a lot of time in between.

If you are looking for a very powerful clipboard extender give it a try!

Another feature I imagine would be nice is a combination of "always pop up if stream matches..." with "never pop up if stream matches..."

Anyone interested in coding it, maybe even as part of the NANY thing?

Might even take less than 1% of the time skwire put into Trout so far.  :D

YES, thanks!

Too bad they only have it for one galaxy. Lots of other great images on that site though.

Living Room / NASA / Hubble: comparison images of galaxies?
« Last post by brotherS on November 05, 2011, 04:46 AM »
Hi,

I once visited a web site which displayed/compared different kind of 'views' on the same galaxy:
- gamma radiation (only grey and black... not much to see here = boring)
- visible light (a little bit better but... still more or less boring)
- electro-magnetic combined with something else (awesome colors = WOW!!*)

*picture something like this Antennae Galaxies image:

Now I can't find that site anymore...  :(

Who knows where to find something like that?

Hi,

a little idea for the thumbnail column (the left side of SC): when editing a filename, make TAB behave like in Windows Explorer. When you press TAB key while editing a filename there, the next filename (of the file below) is edited. I saw that other programs behave like this too, would be great if SC would too!

Screenshot Captor / feature request: enhance the icon mouse-over info
« Last post by brotherS on October 20, 2011, 04:21 AM »
Hi again,

a feature request: enhance the mouse-over ('system tray' icon) to not (only) show "Screenshot Captor", but (also or instead) the file name of the most recently captured image (if you captured one since starting SC).

That way I could check if I captured something already without opening SC's GUI first.

A related idea would be an option to show the just captured image for x [customizable] seconds on the screen, maybe with some kind of lightbox effect (like http://webworkblog.n...htbox_2-beispiel.png).

« Last post by brotherS on October 20, 2011, 02:42 AM »
Hi,

I'd like to be able to reduce SC to one third of the desktop's size and then capture other windows, to always be able to see if the last capture looks ok. But when I do that, SC (after hiding itself for the capture process) always resizes itself to full screen size. I'd appreciate if it would remember it's previous window size.
