Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA ~ Show List of Shortcuts overlaid on Desktop
« Last post by bob99 on September 16, 2011, 09:02 PM »
bob99,

Yes -- this is exactly one of the things i am considering.
Actually i've been planning to add this as a standalone feature of LaunchBarCommander for a while now, and that will happen.

The outstanding question is how can i best support a large user repository of application-specific help data in the best way.

My thought with the LBC variation was basic in nature.  The main bar, with the ability of adding a child for each program and a sibling that would list the hotkeys.  The sibling being more along the line of a notepad page where the user enters the keys in a format like tomos provided in his earlier post.
The free form notepad type view could let each user group the hotkeys to their preference.  Alphabetically, by function, function group, most used...

@mouser:  Is there a way this could be done with Launchbar Commander?  Not perform the hotkey action but provide the list.
ie create a bar with a node for each program and a dropdown sibling with the hotkey list. It's not an overlay per se but if docked to the top of the screen, somewhat similar. Or even use a hotkey to display it  :tellme:

Not able to report on the other fix.

Thanks for the update.

Possibly VueMinder Calendar Lite or Pro ??

I just updated my pro version and it looks like they have added some nice additional features.
Here is the help file section link for Event Reccurence to check out.
They are also open to suggestions in their forum section.

I just checked and looks like it is happening for me also.

Screenshot - 9_9_2011 , 12_33_21 PM.png

Un-checked all three boxes and Accept.
Then exited/closed CHS in tray.  Re-started CHS, looked and all three boxes were checked again.

Any other settings that should be changed to make it stick.

Have you looked at MyLifeOrganized ?
A number of members here have commented on it before.  Search DonationCoder for MyLifeOrganized.

I'll offer an opinion for the "I kind of like like it" side of the road.  The kind of like it part is the screen shown on the 1st post pretty much has everything a typical mouse/trackpad user wants to do is right in front of you. Copy, move, new folder...
But instead of it taking up the real estate at the top of the window I'd rather have that screen pop up at a right click instead.  Just seems to me it would be easier to locate something on this type of screen than most of the shell extenders I looked at.  Seems easier to find something scanning a pop up right & left than up & down a pop up.  Keyboard shortcuts are unquestionably easier. I find myself using them more.  Occasionally though I forget what one or two are and need to revert to point & click.

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: URL Extractor
« Last post by bob99 on August 26, 2011, 10:38 AM »
I am not looking for a downloader program, the URL are for later processing.
Don't overlook downloaders...  I think Internet Download Manager (IDM) can do what you want.  You can clip an area on a Web page, then go Tasks > Add batch download from clipboard.  It gives you a screen where everything is listed, with checkboxes to mark those you do/don't want.  Those required are put into a queue, which you can start at any later time you want.

I currently have Downloadhelper, FlashGot, DownThemAll, Scrapbook, Screengrab and some other add-ons in Firefox.  At one time or another one of them has been able to do something that one of the others couldn't, or was easier with.  Thinking of trying IDM and maybe now Getright.
Could I ask your thoughts on whether IDM or Getright could replace the add-ons I have?
I'd like to try and streamline the number of programs I use if it's even feasible.

Thanks,

HALF a zillion, rjbull ;-)
I am not sure my opinion on software can help any one... My first concern is if the program is easy to use, and stable. Yes, I have tried many and I have disabled them all - except one of course: "CFi ShellToys Clipboard+". I like this one the best.

This is the 1st I heard about CFI.  Looks like it can combine a few different programs/utilities I've been using into one.  Going to try out the trial and see.  Before I do, does anyone know if it will "play well" with XYplorer?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Allow commenting of files in directory listing
« Last post by bob99 on August 24, 2011, 10:09 AM »

Would using the comment field in XYplorer be of help?  I'm still getting comfortable with all of the ins & outs of XY and just started utilizing it's comment field.  XYplorer uses it's own "Comment" field and not the Win Explorer's "Comments" one. But I noticed both are shown while doing a mouseover in XY.  And you can show the comments as a column in the folder/directory listing in XY.  For me, I also like that I can select multiple files in the folder and add the the same comment (or tag(s)) to all at the same time instead of one by one.
May be that some or all of the other file managers listed above can do this also.

Son of a gun.  It's something I can do in PDF-XChange also.  Just never thought about it.  Most of the time I know which PDF/manual I need to go to for reference.  Occasionally though, knowing I can do this will be helpful.
Good luck with your request. Didn't mean to go off topic.

I have a huge number of PDFs, and often I perform text searches across my collection.

Not sure if I'm asking this right...
Are you searching inside each of the individual PDF's in the collection one file at a time or able to search all of them start to finish? Without manually opening each file individually, searching it, opening the next, searching, and so on.

If it's all at once (automatically one after the other) what are you using to do this?

« Last post by bob99 on July 14, 2011, 12:02 PM »

Thanks very much for the suggestion and the link vevola.
Tried it out and it isn't exactly what I was thinking of in my original post.  I've been getting more comfortable with the many features of XYplorer and doing similar to what Winkie suggested above.
But, CopyPath is going to be helpful to me in another way.
I tried a test using the standard file "Open..." in Excel and Word.  After I get to whichever file I'm wanting to open I can right-click and select the copy path and there I have it to paste into any other program I may need to paste it.
I can do this already if I'm opening the file from within XYplorer with DonL's tip above.  But couldn't if it was being opened from within any other program.  Also works with lists of files I access with my Launch Bar Commander set-up if I need it to.
Thanks again!

After receiving feedback about user not being able to put the apps shortcut link in startup folder and Google not giving any simpler explanation, I made a webpage in this regard.

Simplest way to put shortcut of a program into the startup folder.

I wanted the steps to be very simple and common to even non-technical person. I will request all to give comments on it to make it even simpler, if possible.

Regards,

Anand

Anand,

Thank you for this.  These steps are 'old hat' and simple to some, but if a person hasn't done it before they don't necessarily know where to start.  Or what to search for.  ie the feedback you received.  It's not that they can't do it, it's just something new to them.

I bought XYplorer Friday on the BDJ special.  It's great!  I think I may be able to do what I'm looking for with it.  Or use it in place of what I'm trying with a notetaking program.  So this can probably moved to "solved."

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by bob99 on April 08, 2011, 01:20 PM »

I looked through the post & didn't see where this has been asked before.  Is it possible to add a bookmark function?  Or is it there and I just haven't found it?

Along with music I also use Trout to listen to previously downloaded podcasts.  Sometimes there is something I would like to go back and listen to again to make a note of something said.  Now I keep Trout on the screen and jot down the TE or TR for the show I'm listening to and go back later.  If a hotkey could be pressed to save some of the tag info and a TE or TR it would make it easier to find than the slip of paper I wrote it on.

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Copy the "Save As" filepath to the clipboard
« Last post by bob99 on April 08, 2011, 12:11 PM »
Let me know if this isn't the right forum for this.

Like most, over time I have collected a large number of program downloads, pdf's, etc.  Recently I have started "cataloging," as such, some of my new downloads, documents, etc.  I have been trying out a couple of notetaking programs for this.  The ones I have tried have the ability of clicking on a pasted complete filepath link and it will take you to the directory if it is a saved program or for documents load the associated program and the document.

Here are the steps I use now:
From a browser or program (Word for instance) I use the "Save as" selection, find the directory and at times sub-(or sub-sub-sub) directory to save to, leave the file name and file type as it is or change it and save.  Then I have to open a file manager, drill back down through the directories to where it was saved, copy the filepath, paste to the note page I am creating and add any tags/notes.  I also like this way because I can also add a screenshot to the note if I want to.

I'm trying to minimize the steps a little.

After doing the "Save as" I'd like to not have to go back through and find the saved file with a file manager to get a copy of the complete file path to paste to the note page.  Here's what I'm wondering... Is there a way to also send a copy of the complete "Save as" file path to the clipboard (or to Clipboard Help+Spell) at the same time as the file is being saved?  I could then just bring up the clipboard (or CH+S), paste it to the note and add whichever extra is needed for the program to recognize it as a link.

I have searched through the forums here and on some other sites but haven't found anything similar discussed.

Thanks,

Downloading now ;-)  http://sourceforge.net/projects/flashfolder/

But isn't it dead?
The only version I can see at Sourceforge is 1.9.181 from 2008. I have 1.10.227.0 installed from somewhere I don't remember but it changes nothing.
-fenixproductions (February 21, 2011, 06:25 PM)

I saw Ver 1.10.227.0 available for download in this FlashFolder Forum posting on SourceForge.  Here is the link shown in the post. http://zett42.de/_te...er_TEST_1.10.227.zip

Edit: Oops...The link now comes up not found.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to make Firefox Not Open PDF Files
« Last post by bob99 on April 05, 2011, 08:27 AM »
In Firefox 4
Tools > Options > Applications > Application/pdf  I set to "always ask"
There are also other choices here.
Thankyou for that note. I had not spent the time looking at that menu. That seems like quite an improvement in FF4 over the previous versions.

@IainB
The same can also be done in earlier FF versions. Not sure at what version it was implemented but here is a screen shot off an XP machine running FF 3.6.16.

FF 3_6_16 PDF Save.png

It looks a little different than the earlier shot.  The earlier was from Win7 with FF4.  Both work the same.
I wasn't aware of the other methods mentioned above when I found this one.  It works best for me in that if I know it is a trusted source I can go ahead and open it or save it to a folder to virus scan 1st.  If I decide to open it, it's opened in PDF-XChange and not the browser. And I can save it from there if I want.
