General Software Discussion / Multiple Monitors Question
« Last post by Josh on July 12, 2008, 09:52 AM »
OK Folks, this has been discussed here a lot. Here is my question.

I am currently testing ultramon but I require a program which can dictate which monitor an application starts on as well as allowing the taskbar's tray icons be extended onto both monitors. Is there such an application?

For those that were not aware, we recently announced that effective November 1st, 2008, OEM's will no longer be able to license Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in the embedded channel. Now we all know that it's been long gone in the standard (retail/OEM) channel, but one of the unique things in the embedded business is that we allow the classic OS products to be sold longer than the other channels. it's *finally the end of an era!

I just wanted to chime in with an update. After using this company for about 6 months now, I am happy to report that their services have proven extremely useful and easy to understand.Their servers have always remained online and I have never been without email. I can easily configure almost every aspect of my account from their web gui, although a standalone tool would be nice or even a client plugin for anti-spam rules. Otherwise, it is a very nice service and I recommend it to anyone looking for more than most free email providers can provide.

Am I the only one who finds a trackball to be a very good gaming "mouse"? I have a trackball explorer by microsoft, on my second one, and I have not been able to find a good replacement for it. Nothing comes easier than this trackball. I am looking into the kensington expert mouse which our very own KenR has recommended. Thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 3 Bug
« Last post by Josh on June 28, 2008, 01:15 PM »
Yeah, that has been my experience. However, Jeff (AM List maintainer) has pawned this off as likely being a firefox bug since he is having no signs of this, as is the norm with most bugs I and others seem to report, although the bug completely disappears after changing an option in ad muncher or exiting it completely. This seems to be the norm from my experience.

I just fail to see how the bug could be firefox's fault when ad muncher's options (or exiting) fixes the issue. Can anyone explain this to me?

Mouser or any developer for that matter, from your experience, does this explanation make sense? In my limited development experience (limited to programs suiting my own particular needs) this doesnt make sense. If my program, when terminated, resolves an issue, or enabling an option in my developed program fixes a problem in another, how can this bug not be my programs fault?

Yes I know, I sent an email to the developers and have yet to receive a reply. We shall see. It seems that setting that option fixes the issue but why should it have to be enabled when it didnt have to be previously. Am I required to clear my cache on a daily basis (with each new list update) in order to fix the issue? I should hope not.

Grorgy, can you check to see if the following works for you?

In AM, go to options - caching and CHECK the option "Modify browser requests to avoid caching". Then clear your cache and see if it still occurs.

I am beginning to think its an ad muncher issue as well. Exiting AM and then clearing my cache seems to help the issue. I am working with admuncher's options to find out what is causing this.

To the community,

I am having issues with firefox 3. I currently have the bug posted at Mozilla's Bug Tracker. The issue is this. I have just finished a complete reinstall, deleted profile with no extensions and a firefox reinstall, in an attempt to fix this issue. It appears that firefox is failing to load images on a refresh of a page. This occurs after many pages are refreshed using F5 or the reload button. As such, the pages appear broken and often contain just text with a very broken appearance. Has anyone experienced this? Click the link above for some images of what I am seeing.

Metallica took a stand against an unauthorized distribution mechanism. Now, they are one of the forerunners in embracing digital distribution. Just look at livemetallica.com, metallica.com, missionmetallica.com and the sales for their new album.

FindAndRunRobot used to be such a great application, however, its developer seems to have forgotten about it. Its been in perpetual beta status for over a year and a half. Kinda reminds me of mulberry, the email client :-/

Living Room / Rest In Peace - George Carlin - 71
« Last post by Josh on June 23, 2008, 08:24 AM »

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - George Carlin, the frenzied performer whose routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television” led to a key Supreme Court ruling on obscenity, has died.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, went into St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He had performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. He was 71.

“He was a genius and I will miss him dearly,” Jack Burns, who was the other half of a comedy duo with Carlin in the early 1960s, told The Associated Press.

Carlin’s jokes constantly breached the accepted boundaries of comedy and language, particularly with his routine on the “Seven Words” — all of which are taboo on broadcast TV and radio to this day.

Rest in peace. He was one of the greatest comedians of all time. George, you will be missed.

I don't see media formats as being propietary (minus apple's quicktime format). What I do see as proprietary is DRM. Now, if you are calling for removal of DRM, then I agree. If you are calling for migration to a single format for audio and one for video then I say it wont happen. One of the beauties of computers is that people have a choice in which format they use. As such, people will have needs which change and the formats will change to support this. MPEG (1,2,4) and DiVX (XviD) appear to be the mainstream video formats and have been for some time really. Now, if your major problem is DRM, then please criticize that, if it truly is proprietary formats (of which very few non-open or interoperable formats exist nowadays), then criticize that. Your original post calls for the removal of proprietary media formats however it seems the root of your issue is not the formats, but the DRM attached to the formats. Any format can have DRM attached, it just takes the consumers to adopt it for it to succeed.

What do you mean? Like the key bindings? I.E., changing address field focus from ALT+D to CTRL+ALT+X if you desired? If so, keyconfig has to be updated to fit firefox 3. It currently does not work even if forced

As I said in the IRC channel, this is what firefox 1.0 should have been. This browser now has a plausible default theme, no need for another one in my opinion, it has the needed functionality to make it act like a browser should out of the box. The tagging functionality and history search via the address bar are genius and work beautifully especially for recently closed tabs. The memory usage is far less than its predecessors. I highly recommend this browser now. Yes, opera might have a small edge in speed compared to this, but its not enough to justify using it given opera's other weaknesses and limitations. Great job mozilla. I am now proud to say I am a firefox user.

Lashiec, my posts have nothing to do with being "leet". I could care less what people think about me. My problem is opera and its continued thumbing at accepted practices on the web and their "The way we do it is the only way" mentality. Opera 9.5 is unstable, memory hungry on various sites, and has various glaring issues. All one has to do is read the comments on the opera blog to see that this was simply rushed out in order to compete with firefox 3, which this CANNOT do.

I really dont consider the wand simpler given that opera has prevented you from EDITING passwords. Again, this is overdoing it on the "Protect the user from themselves" mentality that opera has given web browsing. Their browser is fantastic, I love it to death, but I cannot use it full time as roboform is just one of many tools I have sunk money into that I am not willing to blow away on inferior implementations of similar features.
