Ow, I overlooked that :-[. Well, that's a start. I wouldn't trust Motherboard Monitor for offering that kind of information though, as that information is provided by the motherboard's sensor chip, and it's not as exact as measuring it with appropiate equipment. I was meaning something like this showed here. You can view the equipment used in the previous page.

I think the article is talking about the low voltage delivered on the +5V and +12V lines. It's always better to have a bit more power delivered on those lines than to falling short. I don't understand the second point, though.

General Software Discussion / Re: Can I uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 ??
« Last post by Lashiec on August 02, 2007, 07:07 PM »
.NET 3.0 installs 2.0 as well. 3.0 is simply the "Vista version", as it installs most of the things used to make native applications in Vista, including bonus files as those involved with XPS. You really need 1.1 around, and Windows Update (the site, not Automatic Updates) lists it as an update. In short, you need a high amount of thrash to actually do something, like testing those crappy little applications programmed by kids who were told by someone that .NET was the new Visual Basic (no offense here, Wordzilla ).

If the .NET world was like Java... although I heard this does have its share of compatibility problems as well, but the proofs I saw were only lots of talking and no real evidence.

BTW, .NET 3.5 is coming.

Try to get as much input on that PSU as possible. Most sites are content to say "yeah, very stable, very quiet" but that's only VERY subjective appreciations. It needs a thorough test using special equipment. It's quite strange that a 300 € computer could bring a good 500 W PSU, as the best ones can go over 100 € alone. Unfortunately, it's quite difficult to find a good site with those reviews, and those there doesn't do as many reviews as they should... :(. I'm saying this because a PSU is quite important for a system to perform as it should, and to get as much life as possible of those components used in the PC.

LG... OK. They're not the best burners, but they're quite good anyway, and if you have a Plextor... :D. Samsung, those HDDs are good, they perform more silent than those manufactured by other brands. It's not that you're going to hear the HDD working anyway. Maxtor... I won't comment those. By the experiences of a couple of friends, I wouldn't buy those HDDs even if they paid me. But that does not have to do something with you opting for another brand. After all, they're owned by Seagate now.

Ah, now I recognize this "guide". It was posted a few months ago in another forum which, incidentally, is plagued by newbies asking everything, though in this case, the site itself is full of FAQs. Anyway, a guy looking for advice is not going to read a 32 page guide, despite it's well written or not, at least not those ones jumping with questions (read: newbies or more precisely, n00bs). OK, enough bashing ;D

Living Room / Re: Article: A Woman's Primer for Building Her Own Computer
« Last post by Lashiec on August 01, 2007, 07:34 PM »
Good read. I might add that it's quite a good article, not only for women, but also for men, which I know by experience they're not exactly masters at computer assembly ;). It's even better if you compare it to those entries Jeff Atwood wrote in Coding Horror recently about assembling a computer for other coder (hah! I told you ;D), which was directed towards those glass-eyed men she mentions at the end (despite making some questionable component-choosing decisions)

The two first paragraphs remind me of a girl we helped buy a computer in another forum. Despite she didn't assemble the system by herself, she really wanted to have the best components for her money, and she made quite a good selection, despite being her first time doing that. With some fixes here and there, she ended up with a helluva computer (better than mine I might say :-[), and went to the shop to do the order. Well, the shopkeeper tried to do exactly what this "Molly" says in her article, dumbing down the system to something not that capable. But the girl stood firm, and was victorious :). Ah, she also wanted to play Oblivion in its full glory ;)

Let us see... if you're going to do some 3D gaming, you'll run into problems with that on-board video chip. For gaming, a good discrete graphics card is what you need, unless you plan to play old games or games with low requirements. In those cases you don't need one. Like f0dder says, an overview of the system future usage will be good.

Also, be sure to have that case well cooled if you plan to go with the on-board video. I heard they heat quite a bit if you stress them.

Could you give us some insight over that PSU? 550W may be overkill for your system, although that's not my main concern but the quality of the components housed inside it. What's the price?

With AMD you get a good system for that price. Despite that speed difference, Core 2 Duo architecture tends to bring higher performance than higher speed Athlons. That said, with that 70 € tag, you're better with the AMD, it's not likely you're going to perceive any difference, unless you overclock, of course.

What's that burner you have in the budget? And one final thing: if your HDD is a Seagate, be sure to remove a little jumper that comes in the far right side, to avoid limiting the bandwidth available for the hard drive to 150 MB/s (not that you're going to fill all that...). The little one is a bitch, so don't give up easily. I think that's all...

Look carefully that PSU, as I see you're opting for a MicroATX case, and you could have space problems. About power, if he is not going to upgrade the machine to something quite powerful in a near future, a good 300W power supply should be more than enough. In 7 years the wattage needed by components didn't escalate that much, despite those insane people manufacturing 1 and 2 KW PSUs (who is going to need that kind of power?)

EDIT: Typos!

I can answer (partially) the second question. There is another IDE based on Dev-C++, but oriented for wxWidgets programming. Appropriately called wxDev-C++, you can find more information here.

As for the other questions, did you look into the DevPaks? The latest version of Dev-C++ (4.9.9.2 beta) comes with an interface for downloading these packages. I understand that some of the packs might contain what are you asking for.

Ahh flames. Whatever Happened to Civility on The Internet?

I think Jeff Atwood doesn't surf the Internet that much. If he thinks that's uncivilized, then I don't know what he would say of some of the forums I go to...

tinjaw: and I hate you too, you stupid git, yo momma's so fat... etc. 8)

YEAH! Flame war!! w00t!

I agree with iphigenie. The internet was empty of respect far before forums were born. But it's also part of the whole mix, and you can't deny it's quite hilarious how things turn up sometimes. tinjaw, share with us a link!

That is quite strange. I've used Opera with tons of tabs open in a 128 MB machine, and I didn't had problems with the resources. Maybe because my computer was disconnected from the Internet?

I don't remember any app like that. Resources usage in Windows is quite random, for my monitoring experience, and some apps consume resources in a progressive scale, like PowerTools, and they only release them when they totally close. Others, like browsers, I think they change depending on the graphical load of the page rendered.

Yeah, since Zaine announced XYplorer version 6 on his blog, I started to think in setting up a divorce demand from xplorer², and engaging with XYplorer. A visit to its website didn't do any good, and this once happy relationship is in a turmoil right now. I might start up saving for a XYplorer license, instead of the xplorer² one I intended.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: SendMessage Plug-in

Seems like an arrogant bastard... wouldn't use any of the guy's products.

HAHAHA! f0dder, I think you didn't catch the joke. There's this joke going since a lot ago in the forums that basically Ian is a medieval lord ruling over the 'English' land from his Luck castle. He is a ruthless lord, albeit thoughtful, and the only way to request something from him is by force. Basically, if you want something implemented either in BASS or XMPlay, the more people requesting it, the better. The explanation is a bit made-up, partly true, partly my interpretations on the matter. The guy did accept lots of request on the past, even some ones from me, although I'm not exactly a regular there, but exactly the reversal.

Lets hope you're not using foobar2000 either, same deal with its author if you ask me.

Peter Pawlowski is worse in that regard. He does accept requests. You post an idea in the forums, and if you're lucky, next foobar2000 version will have that feature implemented. But you don't have a mean to know if Peter will do something about it or not, and that's including comments on the matter. Ian doesn't comment everything, but at least he make some input. Peter is totally silent.

Of course, foobar2000 is practically user-programmable, so Peter only sets up the basics. It's up to plugin coders and foobar users to shape up the player. And plugin coders does accept suggestions. I mean, they live on that ;D

Lashiec, let us know the thread you post to, so people can add themselves to your mob :)

Sure thing. The usual thing done there is once a new version is out, a new thread with requests for the new version is started. Much more like the thing we do here with FARR, but instead of requesting BEFORE the developing phase, we do it DURING the developing, to prevent mouser for releasing the new version before the next Windows version or something >:D. Oh yeah, the link

WHOA! I think I got carried on a bit...

The particular way of requesting features in Un4Seen land works like this:

If you have a suggestion for a new feature, then the accepted way of getting it added is to form a mob armed with pitchforks and flaming torches, and march on Castle Luck. Popularity of new features is gauged by mob size, and accuracy of thrown pitchforks.

I'll post something on the forum's request thread later. I need to assemble some new suggestions to add to the unaccepted ones in the last version.

Yeah, this is quite strange. Although I'll be more than happy to use the fix for future problems prevention, I never saw this bug, neither in XP, neither in Windows 2000. A friend of mine, who does his share of web development, usually worked with Dreamweaver, Paint Shop Pro, the three major browsers, eMule, BitComet and a share of other programs in a 256 MB RAM XP machine, and he never told me anything like that. I myself worked with Visual Paradigm (Java resource hungry app) and Opera with tons of tabs open in a 512 MB Win2000 machine, and no problems as well.

Apart from a high unresponsiveness, of course ;)

Thanks a lot f0dder! I'll give it a try. Most of the software that will use the feature save their window position, so it's a one-time job. And I see it has a resize feature. Neat!

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Feature request for GridMove
« Last post by Lashiec on July 27, 2007, 07:32 PM »
So this have been troubling me for years, but 'til I asked Wordzilla about it, I didn't found a possible solution, which would be GridMove. OK, so the problem is that I want to fit in the exact center of my desktop a window of any given size. Yep, no resizing (at least for now). A shot to explain the problem.

2007-07-28_021053.jpg

See that "Fusion 3.51 - blablabla" window there? I want to move that window (960x720, but should be extensible to any window size) to the exact center of my desktop (1280x1024, but it should be extensible to any other resolution). Essentially, it's a math job that sometimes I did using a ruler (no kidding), but with some other windows it was a nuisance. If all windows could be maximized without side effects, there would be no problem, but giving some of the software I handle, that's no possible, either because the software was designed to have the window like that, either because it looks terrible on full screen (this is the case, for example).

Well, I think that's all. I hope I expressed my problem/request clearly so you could understand what I'm asking. Feel free to flame me if the written expression of my thoughts is terrible, the request is unrealizable, if I'm a tiny little perfectionist.. well, you see the point ;D
1999
I think that'll involve some kernel tinkering, and probably no one would want to get his hands on it. Maybe the guys on the MSFN forums would do it, but they probably had to reverse-engineer or disassemble the kernel, and Microsoft would go medieval on their asses (in modern age, lawyers sinking them under a heap of lawsuits).

I'll tell you that it was quite difficult for me to run into those limitations, and that's even trying to reach them.

Um, good idea, Wordzilla. I won't be as radical as mouser, removing the second option, mostly because as the board grows, people will want to refine the search (unless the mod performance really escalates well as the size grows). The drop-down box will remove one step, the one for accessing the advanced search. Besides, the possible choices mentioned are well thought

Also, one of my crazy ideas, that I briefly discussed with Wordzilla: an alias for searching the forum with the same options as the drop-down box
