General Software Discussion / Re: XP or Vista user — take the poll!
« Last post by nudone on July 23, 2007, 02:35 PM »
xp here, until i have to use vista - which i don't think will happen. 2010 sounds like a better time to change from xp. maybe linux will run what i want by then - or something just as good. whatever, i would assume there'll be some funky ways of using virtual operating systems by then so things might be a bit blurry.

can't wait for the same business model to be tried in running sweatshops.

nah, it's not slave labour - they're all just playing a game. financial reward would ruin their enjoyment.

i don't understand the topic but i love the production of the show. i hope it becomes very popular.

i'm half way through finishing the tower for the main splash screen or whatever it is. when that is done i'm more than happy to get on with other things - just provide a list of images (or send me a quick scribbled sketch).

as for the user interface - i don't mind lending a hand with that - you'll have to provide me with the direction to go in. but, of course, if someone else is willing to cover this area then i've plenty to be getting on with elsewhere.

if you want quick concept sketches to fill the blog up with then, again, just give me an idea of what it is that is required and i'll have a go - i haven't got much to work with at the moment as things haven't really been decided upon - have they?

you are right about it being that clip. i apologise to all mac fan-boys.

i guess my comments just show how biased i am against apple stuff.

i think the web 2.0 law states that lines have to be diagonal. it's subtle but that is perhaps why the DC stripes run horizontally - who knows what horrors would be unleashed if the lines were ever to slip 45 degress.

just writing my first film script (i'll announce it when the film is in production  :D ) so this looks like an absolutely ideal resource.

thanks for revealling it, mouser, and thanks to Thomas for creating it.

i'd never have know anything about the blog without seeing it here.

kind of like watching the real transformers when they get past retirement and start finding their hip replacements a little wobbly.

i live in the UK and that sounds about right - or, at least, it doesn't really surprise me. but then that sounds like a clear definition of the law - afterall, it wouldn't be fair to have a law that you could merely accuse someone of being a burglar because they were standing in your house - it would be open to abuse.

(my comment above may be a perfect example of how i have been brainwashed into thinking that the law is unquestionable - i honestly don't know anymore.)

Looks like a really interesting setup.

Could you help the ignorant among us and tell us how you set up running Linux and Windows on the same desktop.

i'd appreciate a step-by-step also.

as you say, not a promising sign. perhaps they are flexing their muscles ready for when they feel a change of philosophy is due and move into more profitable areas.

i'm curious as to what is painted on their fronts  :P

(i also like pink floyd - after syd and before roger went.)

i admit my first reaction was to suggest that SMF was dropped completely in order to use some other open source forum setup. i didn't say that because i realise it's impractical - but if i could wave a magic wand i would make it so.

i hope you find out that 'they' are more understanding and that 'they' don't all share the same hardline approach to the rules they love to enforce.

again, i don't know the back story to the search problem with SMF but so far it sounds like they've been upset by a few things - 1. that their search method is crap, 2. that they are incapable of rectifying their crap search method, 3. that someone had the cheek to make a search method that worked without any of their input - because they are so crap, 4. their personal pride has been destroyed because someone now wants to rub their noses in it by distributing a better search mod, 5. etc.

some people just can't take constructive criticism and get all defensive about their work when you try to help - but threatening legal action makes me wonder if there are other things provoking their reaction. perhaps they've had several occasions already that they felt the need to state their ownership of SMF in a legal manner and so the newly submitted search mod caused a reflex negative response.
1991
ah, i see. thanks for the explanation, wordzilla.
1992
i confess i don't really understand what this problem implies - does it mean DC is allowed to use wordy's brilliant search mod or not?
1993
i'm very pleased you like it, app.

i wonder how long it will be before cody and laggy are seen together...

great idea. i still use a pentium 2 laptop - plenty good for browsing, etc. so i look forward to the blog.

it turned out a lot better than i was expecting. very good music and flash actually.

the other stuff by the band seems pretty original/amusing also - i wish them every success (if they don't already have it).
1996
perhaps this is the first step in trying to 'tighten up' the internet - in a typical ham fisted manner. i wouldn't be surprised to see such a law spread across europe.

whatever happens i would hope that human ingenuity finds away around or through it.

fantastic!
1998
i'm in the UK so i really don't know what is happening over there but perhaps you are overreacting at the moment...

as you've mentioned that the law targets tools that are designed to "commit a crime" then it sounds like they need to be more specific - how many tools are designed solely to commit a crime?

and if this applies to the individual then does that not also mean that they will need to prove that your intention was to "commit a crime". simply possessing a particular tool doesn't automatically mean you are going to do something criminal with it.

if it litterally means you'll be done for merely 'owning' something then i see many software programs quickly changing their names - or changing there names every month.

just trying to calm the waters - it might not be as bad as it sounds.

1999
anyone remember 'interfaces' on all the 'happening' websites - where are they now?

in a years time... "remember all those web 2 stripes and reflections and glossy buttons - where are they now?"

Living Room / totally pathetic comparison about apple and microsoft
« Last post by nudone on July 05, 2007, 03:55 AM »
i saw this video whilst browsing someone's design blog (i won't mention who they are as their topic is unrelated to my post here).

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=0pXL5_RvGrs

the clip is meant to be funny and oh so clever - how the ipod would be packaged if designed by microsoft.

i assume the clip was put together by a mac head as i can't see anyone else wasting that amount of time on something that completely misses the point.

apple can get away with minimal design on the packaging because EVERYONE on the planet already knows what the product is about without having to read the box. the box could be completely faceless and just have the word ipod and apple stamped on it on the underside where no one will see it and the product would still sell.

how witty to totally miss this point and show how microsoft would have to resort to actually putting useful information on the box to make it clear what is inside - BECAUSE they don't have the media hysteria and fan boy love for the plastic box they manufacture.
