General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis Backup
« Last post by Curt on December 23, 2012, 04:17 PM »
Renegade was once saved by Acronis, but I am joining the choir of this thread...

... Poof! BSOD!
I just about could have cried...
...
Long & short, I was able to pull out a backup from the Acronis non-stop backup. Phew~! Lost some of the audio, but I at least got the lion's share.
It's good to hear that somehow is having a much better experience with Acronis than I have had. In the end I got so disappointed that I uninstalled my licensed Acronis TrueImage2010.

Today I received an old-fashioned snail mail from my Internet Supplier, promising me unlimited backup for a mere $5 per month. I will take the offer. But still I too am searching for a good backup for the system files. I will however not give praise to Paragon; their habit of launching major upgrades every year, instead of calling it a subscription, (or at least offer an automatic subscription), is not acceptable to me. The way Paragon is doing it is a guarantee that minor improvements (or any changes but no improvements!) will be labelled "new year => new version => major upgrade!" :-(

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Anti-spyware.
« Last post by Curt on December 23, 2012, 09:23 AM »
I have Norton Internet Security. Recently purchase Spyware Doctor. It's hogging my Windows 8 Pro. Just uninstalled it. Now want a good anti-spyware. Commercial ones will do as well. Which one to choose?

It has been several years since the last time I tested security programs in general, because I am so pleased with my Outpost Security Center. Now available for Windows 8, also with extended HIPS for 64-bit. Until new-year you can even have it with a genuine lifetime key for the normal price of just one year's license!

The story has already been posted another place or two on DonationCoder's, but here it is even more relevant:

A cursor indicator. Hovering over hyperlinks will show a different cursor based on the targets file extension.

So? Enable the status bar and watch the hover text. Done.
I have to admit. I thought it was a cool idea. Until I tried it and saw the icons. Would be a lot cooler if the icons looked cool.  But it was easier for me to read the status bar text than to squint and see that little zipper that meant it was a zip file.  :)

-ehh? You must have tried the very first original version, back then. The original version made me write him and suggest much larger icons - which he gave it, as seen on above picture. Surely you were not thinking about these big icons when you said the icons were too small?

-------
What does the Link Alert icons look like?
It is weird that there are no pictures, not even on the homepage!  :(

wow, this video has made people's water boil! And this to such a degree that they are making the exact same fault, they are accusing him of doing! I am really not impressed. But at this low level there is clearly no reason to even try to reason. But of course, just like the video guy I have merely tried 8 Metro for half an hour in a shop, so... guess what? I am on his side! I never managed to do anything with Windows 8 Metro; it was useless to me. Useless.

Note that the update from version 8 to 8.5 of Power Desk Pro is considered a paid upgrade. Major BS as, AFAICR, there were no free incremental updates between versions 8 and 8.5.

Stay away!

-wow, a post from Darwin!  :-* Indeed only his seventh in almost seven months!
On seasonal holiday leave, Mike?

Regarding Avanquest; I only deal with them if both the price really is a bargain, and it doesn't matter too much if the program ever is updated. Burned fingers...

never mind, I've found a better resolution version on YouTube:

I cannot believe I haven't already told about my most used extension for Firefox. I guess it is because I see it so often that I forget it is not standard default, and because it is not called an extension, but a user-style. It was even created by our own Supporting Member Winkie:

Cursor Indicator On Link Hover - with large icons - userstyles.org

A cursor indicator. Hovering over hyperlinks will show a different cursor based on the targets file extension.

Edit:
I am using 64-bit Waterfox 16 on 64-bit Windows 7.
Can somebody tell if this user-style works on Windows 8 and Firefox 17, 18,...?

Visagesoft is the manufacturer, while rumor has it that when the trading company Avanquest is entering the scene, it is because development has stopped. However, in some cases life has proven this to not be true. AudialsOne, is one example. Hopefully, Visagesoft Expert Pdf is another. But time will tell.

Dear pessimist. You can find the answer in the thread:

I believe that when Outpost was first offered they gave a lifetime license - does anyone know if they are still honoring it or not?
Yes, my lifetime license is still working since December 2001.

I already have a lifetime key for the Security Suite (for my desktop pc), but this offer is too good to miss; I totally want to take the offer, simply to already have a "free" suite when (if) I also get a laptop!

I am very satisfied with my Outpost Security Suite.  :-*

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Artensoft Collage tool 70% off today BDJ

today all free!

http://www.giveawayo...photo-collage-maker/

The -70% offer is still on via the same link.

However:

Mis-named as a ‘Photo Collage’ maker, this software is in fact a ‘Mozaic’ making software, which is totally a different kind of photo software. This probably due in part to the fact that the words ‘Mozaic’ and ‘Mosaic’ are in copyright dispute in the U.S. by another software company. Yes, thousands of years after the Romans invented it, some U.S. company patented it. This dispute is still ongoing.

Easy to install and register, Thanks,

As well as Asharif’s review, I must add what I think is the most important part of any software, and that is the OUTPUT quality.

The output of this particular software is well above a million megapixels. You may not notice it too much on an A4 page, but if you have a larger printer or your printer has the ‘posterize’ function, then that is where the quality shows.

Posterizing your image to 9 or 16 pages, then sticking them together will give a good sharp mozaic of images. Remember the more imput images you use, the better the output, so use hundreds of images for imput. I also use different coloured blank images in the mix. This will help fill up areas of same colour such as the sea or sky etc.

looks like this has been updated again.

-yes, 7.4 came 5 weeks ago, but it was merely because of minor fixes.
Because of Win 8 a major update is (slowly) approaching. false rumor? ShellToys already is working with Windows 8

--------------
I believe Dmex is a similar program: http://www.andrerueb...d.de/dmex/index.html It's free.

DMEX has been useful for many years - I used DMEXbar on XP. But I gladly paid for the vast number of extra features in CFi Shell Toys. DMEX is of course both fine and free, but I really like CFi's huge number of available features.

surely, if you are running a laptop, you must have the opportunity to exit the security program(s), and test if things are improving by this way. Your problem #sounds# like the one I had some years ago when my Agnitum Outpost / Eset NOD32 security combination wasn't working well together.

Also, it sounds as if the laptop needs some more / new / better memory.

When I launch Silvernote, I get an error:

[ Invalid Attachment ]

When I had a similar problem (with another program), the only way out of it that I could find, was to run a so-called "cleaner" program, and this way find & delete the empty link. Yes, these cleaners can be terrible, but for this problem a cleaner is very useful.

-------------

It would be nice to know how pleased you are with SilverNote. I was about to test it 3 months ago, but lost interest because of the Pro version's normal asking price. Now re-reading the thread, I am reminded that he gave us a free license (APJA0C0H00GH19CM872D331QHXZDVR) for the expensive pro version, so maybe I should test SilverNote again.
