hi wraith,
liking this

there isn't an inbuilt always-on-top option?
or would that be problematic i.e. steal focus?

EDIT// I assigned is a hotkey using skwire's WHAT

Veering off-topic:
1. was the thinkshui + logo inspired by the hamburger menu symbol?
2. when I click on the info button, it says copyright 2012 - or is that for the thinkshui brand?

I don't have always on top... I can add that easily enough.

I'll answer the other when I'm in front of my computer, don't understand how people do this on a phone for longer missives

It doesnt remember tasks on restart here -- should it? or is that planned?
That is planned. It is meant to enforce the idea of tasks per day. That's usually where I have problems- when tasks have multiple days.

The Last Jedi

There's quite the controversy over this, but I think it's a backlash over the extended universe to a large extent, mixed with reasonable complaints.

I enjoyed it for the most part, while acknowledging the failures in writing and trimming of unnecessary plot points.  It's also conflated with different political movements, IMO.

Spoiler
The Finn/Rose detour to the Gambling planet, while cool, was unnecessary narratively. You cut it out, and nothing in the movie changes.  That's bad writing, IMO.  You have to be ready to kill your darlings, and that definitely applies to that whole subplot.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Much better than I thought it would be... especially for a remake.  It's a lot more coherent than the original, with some great turns for the actors, adapted to a new age.

I did take a moment to process it given the wording is different, but I can see getting all of the text to fit is an issue, and having it just say "NEW APPS NEW YEAR" does not bother me personally.

You could make the font on the 'for the' smaller.  Just bothers me from a grammatical perspective lol

A while ago, there was a guy that made his font bigger, and also red.  I'd always assumed that it was just him, but wanted to make the font in a post bigger.

[ size=12pt ][ color=red ]Default when clicking the size button[ /color ][ /size ]

Is there a reason it defaults to red when you click the font size button?

NANY 2018 Entry Information

Application Name PlainTasks
Version 1.0
Short Description Displays 3 tasks for the day, one at a time.
Supported OSes Windows 7 and above (Any Windows OS that supports .NET 4.5.2)
Web Page http://thinkshui.net...software/plaintasks/
Download Link https://my.pcloud.co...dByYFLlveFYTMfYHPkny

PlainTasks
Overview
PlainTasks is a very simple task manager. I start out with the best of intentions, but have a problem maintaining a task list over time and making use of it.

This application is quite simple- a transparent window with the ability to load 3 tasks. At any time, only the highest priority will show. When you mark that task done, it will show the second in priority, and ask you for a new bottom priority task. That has been working well for me as an analog idea, and I just wanted to bring it to the digital realm.

Currently, it doesn't save the tasks- to force the idea that these are tasks to be done immediately, and not to be forwarded or put off. I might add features later, but as the analog version of this only has these features, I figured I should start there.

If you wish an analog version, or just want to see where the inspiration came from, check out The OnTask.

Notes
As I put a lot into software normally, but most of the features are not used, I made this one on the principle of YAGNI.  So, if you use it, and have a feature request, let me know.  Otherwise, I'll assume that this is a good feature set, as it works for me.

Installation
PlainTasks requires .NET 4.5.2.  If you have Windows 10, you probably already have it.  If not, you can get it from Microsoft.

After you download PlainTasks, unzip it where ever you want to run it from, and run PlainTasks.exe.

Uninstall
To uninstall, just delete the folder where you unzipped the archive.

Documentation
As PlainTasks is intended to be rather simplistic, there's not much to using it.  Anytime you run it, it will show a dialog that has three spaces for three tasks.  Enter those, and click OK, and the first Task will be shown.

PlainTasks2.png

From right to left, the toolbar at the top has the following functions:

  • About this Application
  • Initialize Tasks (If you want to start from scratch with 3 new tasks, this is where you start)
  • Complete Task (Completes the current task, shows the next task in the list, and asks for a new task)
  • Add Task (If you have less than 3 tasks, you can enter another one from here)
  • Exit the application

Man of Steel.
My favorite Superman movie so far.  In this case the cliche "action packed" actually applies.  :D

I loved it too, but it appears that the die hard fans don't like it.

Heh.  One thing that bugs me about Superman is how can he claim to be "Super Intelligent" when he flies around with a cape creating immense drag?  That thing should only be worn around the house like a smoking jacket.  :D

Perhaps he flies so fast that the drag is insignificant to him getting where he needs to go? :P

No it's not hacked! Why do you think it's spam?

It was just a web hosting link, here I uploaded it somewhere else:

The prior link had porn on it which is why I agreed with IainB and deleted it.  Archive.is can't interpret this one, so I'd suggest approaching it with caution.

What is this one?  It would help if you'd include a description.

I've recently heard about keeb.io as a source for some of these custom keyboard builds. Anyone here have any experience with them and their supplies?

They are a place that you can get parts from, but they're more geared towards unusual keyboards.  There are a few places that you can get kits and such from, but in many cases they're going to be group buys, i.e. you pay in to buy the parts, they put it into production using that money (Think months, not weeks on this part), then after it's done, they ship it to you.

One place that I can recommend is KBDFans: https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/

Their prices are pretty reasonable, they sell kits, and assembly (not sure of the quality of the assembly), and they have a wide variety of stock.  The Orange and Black 75%, and the Gray and Blue one that I just put together have parts from them.  The only downside is that they're in China, so it can take a bit longer to get to you than domestic shops, and both of my orders were stopped by customs for some reason, that made it even slower to get to me.

https://www.aliexpress.com/ also has a wide variety of products, though it's a bit more iffy than KBDFans.  I've ordered from them and it was fine.  However, AliExpress isn't who you will be buying from- they sell store space to a variety of vendors.  AliExpress is just the middle man, which can be off-putting for many people.

There is a chapter on B

Did you intend to write more there? Maybe just "Balance"?
I was going to write out a summary on the chapter that I took the excerpt from, then realized quoting that would probably be fair use.

I don't really care about the box (pips and cards, etc.), but I may be interested in the book. Any idea where I can get a (digital) copy of it? I'm not finding anything on the Kickstarter that leads me to a place I can get it.

The Atlas Games website says the digital version is sold by Gameplaywright, but I can't find The White Box Essays on Gameplaywright's site.

I sent them off a message on backerkit, as it appears that their backer kit is closed, to see about the answer to that question.  I'll let you know what I hear back.

The link on the site to it is http://gameplaywright.net/whitebox/

curious about recommendations for a mechanical keyboard nooby.

I'm interested in getting a tenkeyless board (nothing as extreme as 40%!) but all these switches and options mean nothing to me, and spending $140+ a time to test a keyboard isn't in my budget

The most important things to look at when you get into the Mechanical Keyboard hobby (in my opinion) are the layout and the switches.  You've already said you want a TKL, so you just need to think about the switches.  The easiest ways to differentiate (though a bit simplistic) is tactile vs linear vs clicky and the actuation force.

tactile switches have a slight or pronounced bump on the stem, letting you feel it as you type.  linear switches are smooth from top to bottom.  clicky switches click as you type- like the old IBM keyboards.  The actuation force is the amount of pressure on the keys needed to actuate (activate) it.  There's a lot of keyboard science to them, and a lot is based on personal preference.

You can check this out to see an example: https://www.hyperxga...s/cherry-mx-switches

I like to use Brown (tactile) switches.  They are tactile with an actuation force of 45cN.

As far as boards, it's going to depend on what your wallet can afford.

In the $150 range, I'd go for the code keyboard.

http://www.wasdkeybo...s/code-keyboard.html

It's functional, durable, and a common choice that I see for retail boards.

The Coolermaster is also a good board, and more readily available than the Code keyboards, as in, you can get it from Amazon.

http://www.coolermas...ards/quickfirerapid/

https://smile.amazon...board/dp/B01ITE93K6/
https://www.amazon.c...eyless/dp/B01D8ETGNQ

They're gaming keyboards, but I hear good things about them in general.

As far as the other things, I wouldn't worry about them for now.  In general, they are going to be aftermarket additions, so go with one of the stock switches (I'd suggest clears or browns), and ease yourself in.  If you want to modify it later for silence or better stabilizers, you'll at least know what you're dealing with at that point.

Let me know if you have further questions.

I need to find either the spacebars for this kit, or another set to put on it, as I didn't have the foresight to purchase a split spacebar kit when I got in the buy for these keycaps.

I back kickstarters habitually- more to help worthy causes rather than for the product.  As such, I backed the White Box (https://www.kickstar...gn-workshop-in-a-box).  It has some interesting views on the collectibility aspect as used in games.  You might look at picking it up.  I haven't looked through it, so I can't say for sure it will be useful.  I just thought about it when I received an update from them.  The essays within are from industry veterans.  There is a chapter on B

A short excerpt from the chapter What to Do When You are Worried About Your Game Being Balanced that seems fair use, and might give insight as to whether you want to purchase it or not:

(Not a) Balance Option: Collectible Components
One way some designers try to craft balance is with collectible components.
Mechanically these systems are usually the same as the point or slot systems
discussed above, with added monetary costs. Where they aren’t, they generally
allow players to substitute as much real-world money (or, perhaps, time) as they
want for skill at gameplay.
This highlights the key issue with collectability — it’s a marketing and sales
tactic, not a game design element. While it may well sell more product, from
a design perspective, the sides still need to be balanced apart from rarity,
because if you use rarity as a measure of power, someone can always go buy
or collect as much of a given game element as they can afford, and if this gives
them an unstoppable advantage in play, your game breaks. In collectible games,
having more components should give you more options, not a better chance to
win.
Regardless, adding collectible components makes producing your game a
nightmare. Best to skip it.

I'm thinking about trying it... just found an awesome deal.

Samsung 28" 4K Ultra HD Monitor for 269.99$ through Costco.  I've been looking to switch to a single monitor setup with a secondary one just to use while I'm gaming.  At that price, it's very tempting, though I'd really wanted to go for a 32" or 34" WQHD monitor.  If I pull the trigger, I'll update this thread.
1975
My question is, how do these CCG companies decide what the proper ratio of each tier of card is to the others when printing and selling booster packs? Or in other words, how do they balance the frequency of obtaining the common, low-utility cards with the ultra-rare, high-utility cards, (and everything in between) so that people get just enough good stuff often enough to keep wanting more booster packs?

I think that's proprietary and guarded information; people try to extrapolate it, but who knows how their results line up.  A couple of articles on this:
