I think gothic is also around Berlin by now... let me check...

since he and his wife are in my guest room as i type i can definitively say that is negatory.  he will be in belgium in a week.
19353
ok should be working again.. really goes to show you that not even what you think is the simplest trivial change should ever be uploaded and assumed to work without testing.  :-[

somehow i broke it.. thanks for reporting..
working to fix it now.

who did them anyway?

Nick Pearson (Nudone) of course -- he does all the Cody art.  Though the c-base logo and text is by someone else at c-base.

Of course there would need to be a way to determine it actually NEEDED a fill first, otherwise people would try to keep it under an hour and fill it up to use it essentially for free.
shouild be pretty easy for them to do, they make you enter the mileage of the car when you use their gas car, and they get the bill. (they already have to check the gas usage pretty strictly since otherwise people would abuse the gas card by filling up their own cars with it).

autorun is evil and dangerous.
my view is that no one with the technical skills to read this forum should have it enabled; if you do, time to learn how to disable it.

Living Room / Re: Recommend to me the BEST USB stick to get
« Last post by mouser on May 29, 2009, 12:29 PM »
Quick update:

I bought myself the kingmax tiny usb (that i mentioned here) to put on my keyring.  After a couple of weeks the part that attaches to the keyring is breaking and threatening to fall off.  This is my 2nd attempt to find a tiny keyring usb, so it's back to the drawing board.  Just wanted to warn others looking for same thing as me.  I think next i'll try the Pico-C gold that superboy mentioned here.

Following up on the DC gathering in january (see this thread), gothic (the dc server admin) and his wife traci are visiting me again for a few days, to drop off a cat that i'll be supervising for a few months while they are in Belgium on vacation.

Anyway, i've become a bit of a board game person and we'll probably plan on spending a good part of a day this weekend playing various boardgames.  If anyone is close enough to drive over for the day, I'd like to invite you to come over and join us.

I suppose it's an open secret by now that these DC "Gatherings" are nothing more than when one dc member visits one other (so much for having a massive CodyCon 2010).. But it never hurts to ask, and don't worry if you are the type of person that feels awkward at social gatherings.  Only requirement for this visit is that you have the stamina to get through many hours of playing games you don't really understand.  Just let me know if you'd like to come and i'll get you directions and we can figure out exactly what day it will be.

I just skimmed through the intro video.. And my conclusion is I will watch the full thing -- you've got a very winning way of expressing yourself -- it's fun to listen to your observations and insights.  The part about how you answer people who tell you you are wasting your time on the internet made me laugh :)

Anyway, well done

Of course the technical PHP videos are more interesting to me -- but i think the intro video would be useful to people starting out doing freelance stuff, especially people who are highly skilled and charging *low* rates, and wondering why they are having trouble finding work.  Your explanation of the problem is probably more likely to make sense than reading an academic article on the subject, and is certainly more entertaining.
19363
i think if you have complete control over the usb drive you probably don't care much about this..

the real problem is if you ever have reason to plug *someone elses* usb drive into your pc.  that's where understanding how to prevent autorun from triggering is so damn important.

[probably one of the few scenarios described by cyberwarfare people that actually represents a real risk is the very low-tech approach of planting a virus on a usb stick along with some pictures and "losing" the usb thumbdrive somewhere on the premises of the place you want to break into.. curiousity gets the better of people who should no better, they plug in the drive to see what's on it, and it's game over]

From a review on cnet news:

"The Geek Atlas: 128 Places Where Science and Technology Come Alive" by John Graham-Cumming could be the answer to the yearly Father's Day gift dilemma.

(Although I know a lot of women who would love this book, too.)

Graham-Cumming's book is not of the tacky so-and-so-slept-here variety, but a compendium of locations of true worth in the history of science and tech breakthroughs.

(Credit: O'Reilly Media)The book, which is organized by country, includes latitudes and longitudes for GPS devices, and info like whether a historical site is free or available for a price. It's heavy on U.K. and U.S. sites (it lists the U.S. sites by state) but does attempt to cover the entire world.

Some of the recommendations are little-known science museums that happen to have one or two holdings of great worth, but many are a bit more unusual and creative. Graham-Cumming includes things like the descendant of Isaac Newton's apple tree at Trinity College in Cambridge, England, and the first bridge ever constructed from cast iron which visitors can still walk across at the Severn River in Ironbridge, England.

MakeUsOf.com continues to impress, with a consistent stream of useful and non-trivial howto articles for pc users.

USB flash drives are our personal data carriers, but the way we use it to exchange files also makes them open to viruses.

The Achilles heel which viruses exploit is the autorun.inf file. Autorun.inf file is a simple instruction file present in removable media like CDs, DVDs and USB drives.

...

We have to find ways to short circuit the automatic execution of programs (good or bad), so that a hidden malware does not penetrate our system.

they should give some kind of reward when you fill up a tank that is below the 1/4 level.. i think that would help solve the problem of no one wanting to be the one to fill up the gas.

it should work on all -- let me ask vitaly to look into it.

Just checked it myself and discount code seems to work on every version, so i'm not sure why it was giving you that error.

Let's continue this discussion on the discount thread though.

Newsletter for May 29th, 2009
Codename "Hello Mr. Heatwave"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings all, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.

Way back in 2005 I wrote a comprehensive review of desktop email client applications, and ended up picking RITLab's TheBat as my program of choice.  I'm still a happy user.  Last week DC member Innuendo wrote a mini-review of a spam blocking tool for it and the developers were nice enough to donate several copies for us to give away and extend a big discount to supporting DC members (see section 3 below).

And finally, this is your very last minute reminder that if you are going to be anywhere near Germany on May 31st, you need to find a way to get to the DC meetup in Berlin at the c-base geek bar/club that DC members housetier and gjehle help run.  It's a very cool place, and most importantly we've sent ahead some very cool, and very rare, custom DonationCoder Cody Spaceship mugs that will be on hand to be given out to DC members who show up.  These are going to be collector's items one day so don't miss your chance to get one now! See the post below and let housetier and ghehele know if you will be attending.

2. Your Participation Requested

We'd love to have you participate on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge, or how long you've been a DC member. See below for some links to some good places to jump in and make your first post.

3. DC Software Giveaways and Discounts This Month

There are still a few more days for you to qualify to receive one of 10 copies of Total Commander, the famous file explorer, that we have to give away.  DC member fenixproductions, who also arranged a TC discount for DC members, has said that he's giving them out to new mini-review writers this month, so stop by the mini-review section and write up one of your favorite programs to get a copy.  We also have some new discounts and giveaways coming up for June, including a few more DC mugs, a discount on the Custom Handwriting font service YourFonts.com, and a generous discount and giveaway of the cool spam blocking tool AntispamSniper for TheBat email client (and MS Outlook/Express), due to a nice mini-review by DC forum member Innuendo.

4. DC Software Updates

A bevy of minor updates to some DC Software since the last newsletter, along with a few interesting tips and tricks from the forum.

5. Coding Snacks and Member Mini-reviews

The Coding Snacks Section is where you can request small utilities be coded while you wait.  Since the last newsletter we've had a *LOT* of new requests -- several forum members are on fire lately! Also, check out the mini-review section of the forum, where people can post short reviews of programs they have tried or use regularly.  We only require that the reviewers not be associated in any way with the program, service, or company being reviewed.

6. Sites, Services, and Articles on the Web

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?

7. Software Discussion

Below are some interesting threads about software posted to DC since the last newsletter.

8. Fun and Games

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

9. Developer's Corner

If you're not a developer, don't let the title of this section scare you away - there is likely something of interest to you here! It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last few months -- keep it up people!

10. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar produces a wonderful weekly summary of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  How is he able to keep up this pace? When will he collapse from exhaustion? We are all waiting to find out..

i believe that this feature can be implemented within SC.

not sure what you mean -- are you just confirming it works, or asking that a better way to do it be built into SC?

« Last post by mouser on May 28, 2009, 01:43 PM »
is this on a new install, or just started happening when it was previously working fine?
do you get it every time you run it?  if you exit and restart do you still get the error?

Addnote was never intended to be a final solution.. someone needs to make a better note plugin with searching.

But you could do what you want by disabling the default addnote+viewnotes aliases and making your own.

Here is commandline options for addnote (see the -f option for specifying notefile name and path):
E:\MyDocs\Programming\CodeGear\FindAndRunRobot\Helpers>AddNote.exe --help

USAGE:

   AddNote.exe  [-o] [-r] [-m] [-p] [-d <string>] [-t <string>] [-f
                <string>] [--] [--version] [-h]

Where:

   -o,  --open
     open notefile after completion

   -r,  --report
     report operation result with messagebox

   -m,  --bottom
add note to the bottom of the file

   -p,  --top
add note to the top of the file

   -d <string>,  --dateformat <string>
Format for time/date stamp (uses c strftime funciton formatting, see
     readme)

   -t <string>,  --text <string>
Text to add (enclose in double quotes)

   -f <string>,  --file <string>
     Filename to write to

   --,  --ignore_rest
Ignores the rest of the labeled arguments following this flag.

   --version
     Displays version information and exits.

   -h,  --help
     Displays usage information and exits.

The addnote+viewnote aliases are in Aliases\Installed\Core_Aliases\Core-Helpers.alias
So easiest solution would be to copy that alias file to your Custom alias directory, rename it, then disable the normal core-helpers one and edit yours.
