General Software Discussion / Re: Is there a decent youtube downloader?
« Last post by Curt on January 05, 2013, 04:12 PM »
@helmut85, you say you are willing to install Firefox if need be. I encourage you to do so. Then install the small addon DownloadHelper (and do the settings). When you are on a YouTube page, middle-click on a video in the right column, and it will open in a new tab. DH will automatically find the best / highest resolution. All it takes from you is the initial middle-click, to open a new page, and a second click (on the DH icon in Firefox's Add-on bar) to download the best video, without further actions needed. When you see that the download has begun, you may close the new page, and voila! you are still on the initial page.

edit:
I forgot the download of playlist requirement. I simply don't think this feature is available anywhere. It has been my impression that YouTube made it so far impossible.

What was your biggest disappointments, Curt ?

-PagePlus' former lack of proper pdf handling. It's okay now in X6, but pdf handling was almost completely absent in X4, and merely a semi pseudo feature in X5. Hmm... now I realize X6 may be just fine! "Oh, it's not you, it's me", but recent is listing only 4 files (room for 16), so maybe I should stop complaining and start using my PagePlus some more. Yeah, now I see it: When I open PagePlus X6, I feel I have paid PagePlus X4+X5+X6 + PhotoPlus X3+X4 + DrawPlus X4, for it, so it's bound to score low on value for the money. Maybe it really is (my lack of resistance to) the luring pile of adverts in my mailbox, that is disappointing, not the program itself.

I think I am the prototype on the thread's subject. I have purchased hundreds of useful programs that weren't useful at all - at least not to me. And then I upgrade to the new version, because now I have it, so I must upgrade it, or the initial purchase would seem wasted...

Just like our DC member Darwin I have now changed my ways. I am down to 145 programs installed, and haven't made a single purchase.. ehh... more than a couple of purchases since November. Hello, my name is Curt, I am a softoholic...

1931
@Steven, I think you should know that Serif will mail you more offers than Ashampoo...

I have PagePlus X6, and is disappointed. Mostly because I also had version X4 and X5, and was disappointed with them as well, and because Adobe PageMaker 5 from 1995 in my memory still is better than a brand-new Serif. But you know, all these fantastic offers they keep mailing me...

General Software Discussion / HowTo repair Win 7's zip? (solved)
« Last post by Curt on January 04, 2013, 05:12 PM »
I was just writing a very frustrated letter to a company because each and every zip folder from them were rejected by Windows 7 as being not-valid, when a bell started ringing in the back of my head. I aborted the angry letter, right-clicked some of the zip containers, clicked "7-Zip... Unpack to "...", and voila! the zipped containers were all just fine.

So, my (64-bit) Windows 7 (Home Premium) unzipper has broken down, and I have absolutely no idea what to do to repair it. The file association is still okay; "Open in Explorer". I have never used Windows to create a zip container, but I use it every day to unpack single containers. If I have more containers, I always use 7-Zip, but for a single container, I always use Explorer.

Any suggestions on what to do (to repair it), please?  :tellme:

i always go to check the serif products website but i'm in shock when i see their apps weight are sized in hundreds of megabytes.
Probably the size is because of all the clipart, fonts, textures, tutorials, etc.  The apps do use up a lot of RAM when running, but they load fairly quickly.

I know PagePlus is written in C++, so... maybe it really isn't that big?

I think the biggest problem for Serif may be that the trade people see Serif as entry level products. Today's "90% off" offer could be compared to the long abandoned Adobe PageMaker 7 still being on sale for $500 (!!!).

General Software Discussion / Re: Any virtual printer for .doc or .rtf?
« Last post by Curt on January 03, 2013, 11:40 AM »
If you just want the text on a page, you could just select and copy, then paste to a Word document after running your clip through PureText to strip out everything that isn't text.

PureText can be downloaded here: www.stevemiller.net/puretext/  8)

After 6 years a new version of PureText seems to be coming!:

Note to Windows 8 Users: The default hotkey used by PureText 2.0 (WINDOWS+V) is now claimed by Windows 8 before PureText starts. I'll release a new version soon with a fix. In the meantime, you'll have to pick a different hotkey if you use the hoykey feature.

https://windowssecre...off-isnt-really-off/

With Windows 8, “off” isn’t really off

Win8′s default shutoff and startup processes are unlike those of any previous Windows version. Completely shutting Win8 down — or doing a truly cold boot — requires a few extra steps!

Windows 8 doesn’t really shut down when you click the shutdown icon (or go to Power via the Charms bar/Settings). Instead, Win8 goes into a sort of ‘deep sleep’ mode, similar to hibernate.

You must hold down the Shift key while clicking the shutdown icon — and continue to hold Shift until the machine fully powers off. Only then was I able to enter the BIOS during system startup.

http://www.freewareg...us-articles-of-2012/

One of the articles was a surprise to me and many others:

Do copy acceleration utilities actually lower file transfer speeds?
Our tests say yes!

by Samer Kurdi

We’ve featured several file copy acceleration utilities on this site. Recently, however, we went in and did a head-to-head test to discover which of the many free options was the best at increasing copying speed. The results surprised us greatly: all of the tools we tested actually took longer for the file transfer than Windows Explorer.

Edit:
Given the fact that TeraCopy hasn't been updated for well over a year, I am now going to remove my pro version, because of this article. However, it feels weird that the fastest third-party copier is FF Copy which hasn't been updated for nearly 6 years!! I really like these extra features that came with Tera. What am I going to do? Time will tell.

Regarding my former angry words:

I really don't care how good this program may turn out to be - I will not recommend it! I am totally certain  that the author is a former member of Stasi, KGB, FBI, or similar. I have NEVER before seen so much double quadro confirming this-and-that information before ever getting inside of the program. I cannot even be bothered to tell how much it was - life is too short!  >:(

-I need to clear my wording: It was of course only the first time / at the first launch, that all this happened. Everyday-use is easy.
