Screenshot Captor / Re: SC v2.56.01 - Expand canvas to fit objects
« Last post by mouser on June 15, 2009, 04:31 AM »
let me investigate -- the other possible cause of problem is that its not taking into account the size of the text box above the arrow.

Is there a way to manually expand canvas?

absolutely.

go to the Edit->Resize dialog, and check the box that says expand canvas:

ahh i see now.. let me investigate that.. there is no excuse for the setup program not running properly.
thank you for the report.  anyone else seeing this?

maybe could you try redownloading the setup program using a different browser (sometimes the download gets corrupted)?
can i ask what language+version of Windows you are using?

UrlSnooper / Re: no network adapter detected
« Last post by mouser on June 15, 2009, 04:11 AM »
i was just going to suggest that.. you read my mind.
as you guessed, you should probably just turn off auto network adapter detection and forget about that -- if its not shown in the drop down adapter list, auto network adapter detection wont help, only confuse things.

the real question is why the list is empty..

you are on xp, so that should go smoothly and not even deal with admin issues.

how about trying to reboot windows and try again? some winpcap installs may require a reboot.

maybe you unchecked the option or canceled the install of WinPcap that should get installed automatically when urlsnooper setup installs?

or maybe you unpacked manually and you are saying we should add a note that the user should remember to run the winpcap installer when they unpack manually.

strange.. let me upload a new version and let's make sure.

download and install:
https://www.donation...ads/MiniCapSetup.exe

if you still get the error -- try it without the resize arguements and without the -exit and please make sure its really running v1.16.02.

UrlSnooper / Re: packet.dll missing :(

i think the problem is simply that you need to run the winpcap installer that comes with url snooper in order to to install winpcap, which is a network library that url snooper needs.

General Software Discussion / Re: When does it just become too much trouble

I find that the biggest stress is just remember all the things i do to a system to customize it.
Keeping a good record of everything is 95% of the battle when it comes to configuring a new pc, at least for me.

LaunchBar Commander / Show us your LaunchBar Commander Screenshots
« Last post by mouser on June 14, 2009, 05:45 AM »
I'd love to see screenshots of how people have their LaunchBar Commander configured.

(i don't mean screenshots of the configuration tree -- I mean of your desktop with your LaunchBar).

Here's mine, pretty plain:

It's set to autoslide on right hand side of screen.

Thank you for the push to add context-sensitive help buttons/links -- i really need to do this in my programs, and no program needs it more than FARR.

Regarding suggestions (1) -- good idea, will add.

#2, ok will clarify.

LaunchBar Commander / LaunchBar Commander Idea: Submenu from commandline tool
« Last post by mouser on June 14, 2009, 04:00 AM »
So i was thinking of adding a feature to LBC that would let you create a node whose contents would be built when clicked, by hidden shelling a commandline tool and grabbing the output.

It would let the commandline tool output a filename list but also use some syntax for making submenus/separators.

As an example use, you could have a commandline tool that generated a system MRU list, that showed most recent documents, etc.

It could also be used for generating purely informational info -- for example user clicks a button and it shows various info in the submenu popup.

Any thoughts?  Anyone actually have use for this? Would anyone write any commandline tools for it if i added it?

LaunchBar Commander / LaunchBar Commander Beta with "Tab Nodes"
« Last post by mouser on June 13, 2009, 04:48 PM »
June 13, 2009

For those who were hoping when they saw this topic for some new cool look, i'm sorry to dissapoint -- this new beta feature does not add any new look to the program.

However it does add an interesting new ability to LBC.

You can now create "tab" submenu nodes, which are meant to hold a collection of child submenus, which can be switched between.  By placing such a tab submenu on your dock you can easily click to switch the configuration of your docking bar icons on the fly to different sets of buttons to suit your needs.

For example, you might have one submenu with all your graphics tools, and one with all your programming tools.  Putting these submenus under a "MyWorkflow" tab node, you can now easily switch between these two groups of buttons on your main dock.

Ok, so you never use public attributes in classes unless speed is absolutely vital?

if your question is:

so one never uses public attributes in classes unless speed is absolutely vital?
then the answer is: correct.

if your question is:

then the answer is: no comment.

the "About" window shows it as version 1.99.01.  Another typo?

sometimes i make a change so minor that i dont want to bother the people who just downloaded a recent update, so i upload the changed version but dont tell the updater about it.

anyway, a new version:

v1.100.01 - June 13, 2009
  • [BugFix] Attempt to fix annoying behavior where dock would unslide twice in rapid succession.
  • [MinorFeature] On Windows7 (and in no-border mode) there is now a right-click menu item to toggle resizeable border mode to adjust size of docked bar temporarily; this is another way other than shift+cursor keys to resize docking bars.
  • [MinorFeature] Added larger icon to program.
  • [Feature] Added background image mode to dock display properties.
  • [BugFix] On Windows 7 and Vista the non-docked launchbars were not resizeable.

Developer's Corner / Re: Accessor methods vs public variables
« Last post by mouser on June 13, 2009, 04:51 AM »
Modern programming practices tell you to always use accessors when manipulating or retrieving variables from outside of the class itself.
In general, a class should not allow anyone to mess with its insides directly.

This makes good common sense as well -- an object/class should be able to implement whatever gatekeeper or background functions that it wants to, with complete confidence that it knows when people are reading its values or changing them, and has the opportunity to intercept such requests if it needs to.

The only exception to this would be if you were working with code that absolutely had to be as fast as possible and you couldn't be sure the compiler was going to optimize the accessor access code.

Thanks for all the help everyone..

What we've learned is:
1. keep track of where you bought things if you like them.
2. save the last bit of any favorite tea so you can more easily identify it.
3. chinese people are very secretive about their teas.
