General Software Discussion / Re: Q: Java for Safari on iPhone4?
« Last post by Curt on January 12, 2013, 08:47 AM »
Thank you, Renegade, for the answer. It never crossed my mind that iPhone wouldn't support Java - the very idea seems unthinkable! The reason is the simple one that in Denmark we use the Internet for communicating with the authorities, and to log in to our personnel tax account, and of course to use net-banking, etcetera, and each and every one of these services takes that the user has Java! Right now I am not too sure if Steve Jobs must be the idiot, or if the Danes are the idiots, or both.

General Software Discussion / Q: Java for Safari on iPhone4?
« Last post by Curt on January 12, 2013, 06:00 AM »
I expect (but doesn't know) millions of people must have Safari on their iPhone 4, because my girlfriend's phone came with Safari by default. So how come Java is not available for it? What do all these people do when Java is a must? Or more to the point, what should I tell my Safari-on-iPhone 4-using girlfriend to do, when Java is required? Or is the problem maybe only her phone? I am really in the dark here, just navigating on her iPhone is a huge problem to me, her phone has really made me a smart phone hater! How can these micro people even talk about progress? This "small-is-good" technology is all one step forward and two steps backwards!!

I stumbled across this - DataTap. It looks promising. I will report back it if is any good.

-no, that's not how this thread works: You have to buy a license, and then come back and tell, the product is no good!

I presume that means that their's is not safe with passwords (?)

It doesn't offer password protection, which suites me fine.

-but IainB, isn't that just like Lazarus?:

The stored text is then dropped when its form is submitted.
-Textarea Backup

Anyway, my reason for now using Textarea  Cache is my habit of starting to write, change my mind and go away, change my mind again and come back. In such situation Lazarus didn't help, but Cache does.

Edit: Arhgh, now I see I paid too little attention to the words "when its form is submitted"
Hmm... I might soon test your TB.

Edit2: But no updates for almost 4 years?

I have a couple of times been using Lazarus, but never became a fan of it; too many situations when it didn't save what I wanted it to save, because there was no crash but just me closing the page and changing my mind. Now I have found a better solution for my needs:

>Textarea Cache :: Add-ons for Firefox<

Save automatically the content in Textarea.

This means that a large amount of text is saved, but there are of course also options for auto-deleting the cache.

-I wanted to updated to the new version 2.9.5 via the homepage, because 2.9.5 not yet is ready at Mozilla's, but was met with this very unusual message:

RightToClick 2.9.5 Homepage

but I never get up that early!   :(

This claims to be able to do so for $15, but I have not tested it:

accessory: Smart Edit ("Editing Software for Novelists & Creative Writers") - for any editor.

-such an editor could be Tree Notes 3, coming on sale tomorrow at Bits du Jour for $10 instead of the normal $45: http://www.bitsdujou.../software/tree-notes (homepage: http://www.dextronet.com/tree-notes).
Notize: "Tree Notes 3", not "TreeDBNotes".

I know nothing to answer your question, but I have a few for you! It is one of their free 2GB accounts, yes? I think their prices are ridiculous; if I backed up to their system, my price would be at least $600 per year (for 600GB), instead of the $60 I have been paying ($5 per month) for unlimited space!!

What I really wanted to ask is, what is your upload speed? The reason I now have ditched the aforementioned $60 solution was because of an insulting low (lack of) upload speed available, (measured in kilobytes!); it would take me a year to upload 1TB! - thus killing the very meaning of the word "backup" - so I am in the market for a better solution.

I am certainly no 'google insider' or techie, but I use the feature in mention every day, so I can speak from experience. And I really think that Google uses an advanced but otherwise identical technique as any desktop "Find duplicate or similar photo"-program.

- learned something new, thank you! (You can't google for pictures if you don't have some search term, now you gave me the search terms needed for finding!)

Now learn something "new": Go to Google Images, drag a copy of my picture and drop it on the search box, and without typing any search terms, you will instantly get this:

or, install Google Reverse Image Search (for Firefox).

Off-topic: I've always admired your "Norwegian" symbol - earnest: your own, or copied somewhere? Not really important, it's top-class in either case.

-the program's full name is PageFour - Software for Novelists and Creative Writers and has nothing to do with a personal informations manager.

Have you tried the 'pro' version of AskSam? I think its search functions may satisfy you.

General Software Discussion / Smart Edit (for Novelists & Creative Writers)
« Last post by Curt on January 06, 2013, 07:21 PM »
I am very fond of the humble PageFour ("Software for Novelists and Creative Writers"). Now the same company, (Bad Wolf Software, Manchester, U.K.), has launched a stand-alone piece of accessory: Smart Edit ("Editing Software for Novelists & Creative Writers") - for any editor.

However, the price is $70, so I haven't yet tested it...

Smart Edit

SmartEdit is new software, first released in December 2012. Though minor upgrades are free to licensed users, the software is sold ‘as is’, for what it does today, not for what it might do in the future.

SmartEdit Checks:

    Repeated Phrases List
    Repeated Words List
    Adverb Usage List
    Monitored Words List

    Dialog Tag Counter
    Cliché List
    Separate Dialog & Prose Checks
    Misused Word List
    Foreign Phrase Usage List

    Profanity Usage List
    Suspect Punctuation List
    Proper Nouns List
    Acronyms List
    Sentence Start List

    Sentence Length Graph
    Smart & Straight Quote Checker
    Dash and Hyphen Checker
    Word, Character & Page Count

What Does SmartEdit Do?:

SmartEdit runs a series of 20 individual checks on your work and highlights areas that might need to be looked at. These checks include: highlighting repeated phrases and words, producing a list of every adverb used, flagging possible misused or misspelled words such as “complement” instead of “compliment”.

SmartEdit also examines your sentence structures: highlighting common phrases you use to begin sentences, monitoring sentence length, as well as flagging possibly incorrect punctuation, such as multiple exclamation marks (“!!!?”), or inconsistent use of smart quotes and straight quotes.

What Does SmartEdit NOT Do?:

It does not tell you to remove or replace a word. It does not make any automated changes for you. It does not tell you whether your work might be good, bad, or somewhere in between.

These decisions and interpretations are yours, and only yours to make. Software cannot make them for you, and should not even try. After all, how many repeated phrases are to be found in Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech? Would that speech be remembered today if Dr. King had removed all but one of those “I have a dream” phrases in response to a software prompt?

What's this Uniblue scam?

-probably an exaggeration in the heath of the moment? Serif is also a trading company selling many "not too new" programs like Uniblue Driver Scanner from year 2010.

Something to try with a couple of Firefox addons:
BYTubeD - Bulk YouTube video Downloader
updated version: http://msram.github....version-1-1-2a1.html

-wow, I am impressed. I had no idea such a useful addon was available (of course I hadn't, otherwise I wouldn't have said, what I said, to helmut85!). Really useful, AND it surely must be The Answer to helmut85's request! I have already picked up my first playlist.

Well, good luck finding what you want. If you know up front what you want to download, there are options like http://www.abelssoft...tube-song-downloader . It is quite good, but not for YouTube's playlist format.

... My initial reaction would be to assume that the ZIP files are the real culprits, and that 7-zip simply has better error checking than the default Windows zip program.

-this seems to have been the right answer. Nothing is wrong now.

Thanks to all of you for trying to help.
