General Software Discussion / Re: More about e-mail web based and other
« Last post by cmpm on June 16, 2007, 09:19 PM »
I have 3 yahoo accounts and one gmail.
Using 3 computers now. I've added another p3 866 and use it for my main computer.

Anyway Yahoo is set as default and so is gmail on all 3 computers.
Funny huh!? Yeah, couldn't get gmail to show up as the email in the start menu, so i put yahoo there. But I do have the send with gmail option on my toolbar.

Can't log into more then one yahoo account on one computer except through trillian. Even then it's just monitoring the inbox and not really logged in. That's what I've tryed anyway. And you can't be logged in to the same yahoo account on different computers without it automatically logging you out of the other you are not using.

With gmail you can be logged into the same account on more then one computer at the same time, and stay logged in on all computers. Not sure about running and being logged into more then one gmail account on the same computer at the same time.

That's my experience so far. I like not having the email on my computer unless i want it there. Just for reformat purposes. Which I do occasionally. I've done it so much I've got it down to about a day to get back what I want setup.

2 hard drives on each system so I have special programs there that can't be found any more and my music and pictures.

O yeah email..lol...the subject...web based is my preference. Cause I don't have to be concerned about backing it up for reformating and reinstalling.

Found this little article-

G-mail at the top of the list, which I use now.

But there are others I've not heard of including Windows and Mac e-mail programs.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to reduce pagefile usage?
« Last post by cmpm on June 07, 2007, 08:10 AM »
I watched a conversation in ms groups for a while on paging file usage and best results. It's really in what you run and need as far as programs.

Some say set the min and max to the same so that ms doesn't have to search for it and resize it when needed, others say 1.5 of memory with min and max, others say make it big but fixed if you are running big mem hogs.

It's a matter of personal pref I guess.

Here's another google on it in ms groups mostly....

hmmmm....what if after 'no paging file' reboot into safe mode-defrag-reboot-then set your paging file.

And I know ms defrag is surely not the best defragger.

Wonder if defrag will run in safe mode, should I reckon...

If you really want to defrag your pagefile, set it to no paging file, reboot then set your paging file to system manged or whatever your preferences are. Reboot. You then have a fresh paging file system.

You can set your scanner to a destination of shared documents on another computer. By creating a shortcut to various computers. At least on some scanners.

Allowing access to the scanned whatever, Though you may need the software for the scanner on each computer.

The logic of sharing a scanner alludes me.
Since what you want to scan would need to be put in the scanner, requiring going to the actual scanner.
Unless it's the same thing you want to scan into a computer that is already in the scanner.
A scanner requires manual input, unless I'm missing something here.

though I haven't tryed these various programs
they could be worth a look-

So the benefit would be, in part, that if their server is down, one could still work on their project and it would auto upload when the server is back online. Or if you are offline you can still work on your project and it would auto upload when back online.

Automatic uploading would be better then manually, for obvious reasons that we do other things as well.

Something like a sync server setup. But I suspect it's just an offline help tool rather then keeping things running that one has setup on the net.

And I wonder, if it's your website would the website revert to the server on your computer if their server is down. Cuz most have always on connections to the internet-subject to your isp's server also.

Or perhaps make server sync an option. That would be helping to keep everything up and running.

And thanks for the 'WAMP' idea. Looked at it, though only learned a little.

Thanks mouser, more credits coming soon fer sur...
Not that that is why you posted, I've never seen a more friendly site for software discussions then DC...

Here's the deal-

"A local server....................without needing to contact a server"

This is the part i don't understand. Would our computer serve as a server or is it something else?

What is Google Gears?

Google Gears is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline. Gears provides three key features:

A local server, to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server
A database, to store and access data from within the browser
A worker thread pool, to make web applications more responsive by performing expensive operations in the background
Google Gears is currently an early-access developers' release. It is not yet intended for use by real users in production applications at this time.

If you're a developer interested in using Google Gears with your application, visit the Google Gears Developer Page.

If you wish to install Google Gears on your computer, visit the Google Gears Home Page. Please note, however, that Google Gears is not yet intended for general use.

Nevermind, it's not ready for me yet...lol....
or I'm not ready for it....

Ok, I know I'm way out of my league with you folks on this site. I'm not a programmer or developer and know very little about scripts. Probably should read more about these things and learn, but this is where I'm at, and posting on here makes me a bit apprehensive.

So if you could bear with me a bit, I have a few questions.

What in the heck are you talking about :) !!

Or more simply, put it in terms that an end-user as myself would see it as and use it for.

How exactly would offline access be used, and what would be it's purpose? Other then downloading e-mails and websites. Which can already be done. How is Google going to make this and more better and quicker and more user friendly?

Are they making space on their servers for us, and access this space without the internet browser being involved?

It seems to me that Google is sharing more of it's extensive knowledge on many things and making it available on the desktop. Or simply sharing what's on their servers of choice for info, productivity and speed.

I would appreciate a clue. Thanks.

And btw, I use quite a few Google programs.

A big question is why and what do they get from this?

Thanks again.

The most reliable Java is from filehippo.com.
I've heard a number of complaints about SunJava's download sites.
Though I believe it's the best Java, where you get it makes a diff.
At least this is what I've heard about SunJava to date.

Check your 'program files' file and see if there is any problems like ? or !.
Delete them. Uninstall java and reinstall from filehippo.com.

Personally I loaded NetBeans also, just for fun.
There is also Java development tools there, as you probably already know.

nite-monkey,

i was challenged to to try ie7pro
so I did
those are the results

and I do like ie7 for a few things
it's a simple browser actually
growing kind of fond of maxthon lately

And Lanux, yeah, I know about those threads too well.
Funny Microsoft has it in top downloaded add-ons.
How typical.....

Still no real end-user reports on ie7pro that i know of,
except this one.
And I found a thread that told another poster not to upload the new beta to download sites yet.
What that means I don't know nor care.

First of all-

all my besktop icons became unusable-no link to anything
a yellow triangle with an ! in it would come and go
click on it right or left, it would disappear
the internet was inaccessable via shortcuts
All shortcuts except 'my computer' and 'my documents' were eliminated

Cleaned it up-
ran my cleanup, registry cleaner and windows scan disk
manually removed all files and registry entries to ie7pro

Icons came back to desktop and are operational like normal

Good thing i loaded it on a computer that is separted from my network

ie7pro is not what it claims, it is a disaster waiting to happen to a computer
fortunately I have some tools to deal with such poor and inexcusably bad programs

Concerning number 3.

Seems to me Firefox should have said something as well, putting that extension on their site. And the author should have said something also. If they know what would happen if Gspace is used a lot.

I'll give Gmail a plus though, it let me send an .exe file. It added another extension to it-.mp3, so that it would go through.

Very possible that attitude give me doubts about how he actually carry out his "tests" of this and that including Firefox which he suddenly dont "like" but my problem - must be careful with accusations.

Nope, sorry dk, never said I didn't like Firefox. In fact I'm using it a lot.
Speaking of attitude, look in the mirror. Unless you are some kind of computer generated response.
