Finished Programs / Re: DONE: automated mp3 rip from video clip
« Last post by ewemoa on April 28, 2011, 01:09 AM »
I was thinking it'd be nice to hear some sound when Video2MP3 completed, so I tried something like:

Video2MP3.exe somemediafile.avi && mplayer.exe somemediafile.mp3

but didn't have much luck -- mplayer.exe starts up before Video2MP3 finishes.

Any ideas on getting this sort of thing to work?

Developer's Corner / Article: Writing Forwards Compatible Python Code

While looking into Sage (which appears to use Python to "glue" a whole lot of math/science-related software together), noticed one of their eventual goals was Python 3 compatibility.  Wondering how things were going on the Python 2 to 3 transition, came across:

Writing Forwards Compatible Python Code

Any Pythoners have any comments on the content?

FavLoc sounds interesting -- FWIW, I've been using Automatic Save Folder, perhaps with somewhat similar goals in mind.

If you mount the holder vertically, it ends the argument. Arguing about the end on the left or right isn't quite the same and doesn't carry the same passionate beliefs.  ;)
Brilliant!

FWIW, I tested with FF4 and IE8 successfully (CHS v2.00.01).  I see copied images via the pop-up menu as well as in CHS' main window.

Don't know of an easy way.  May be something at the following will turn out to be of some use:

Although I haven't used the following:

  http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/

it appears there is an API (Windows Messages) for getting it to do various things:

  http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/api/

There also appear to be various utilities for working with it -- on first glance it looks like there may be some kind of command line interfacing mentioned too:

Perhaps it doesn't happen for portable versions of Chrome...

I got the following sort of thing trying to take a look:

I have a dock item for Video2MP3 in LaunchBar Commander on to which I drop video files, but then to look at the results, end up opening the directory containing Video2MP3.exe.

Thought it might be convenient for the created audio files to end up somewhere else.

Two obvious possibilities:

  • the directory containing the video files (my preference)
  • some user-specifiable fixed location

What do you think?

There was a Wikipedia page related this subject:

Perhaps all of the articles mentioned at its end have already been posted, but FWIW :)

A bit late to the party...

Did anyone get around to trying it out?

This is a summary of getting PortableApps' Opera 11.10 to work with Voice.  (Inspired by the Text-To-Speech Freeware? topic.)

  • Install PortableApps' version of Opera 11.10 -- assuming below in a directory named 'OperaPortable'
  • Start OperaPortable\OperaPortable.exe
  • In Opera, navigate to Settings > Preferences > Advanced > Voice
  • Enable, disable, and re-enable "Enable voice-controlled browsing" via the corresponding checkbox
  • If asked whether to download some file, answer in the affirmative
  • If after downloading, failure is reported, use a packet sniffer (e.g. SmartSniff from NirSoft or Wireshark) to determine a URL for the aforementioned file (the file name may look something like: 20110330.1.vxm_win_full_11.10.zip)
    • Download the file in question
    • Under OperaPortable\Data\profile, create a voice directory
    • Extract the content of the zip file in the new directory (so the new directory should contain files with names including vxm.dll, vxmplugin.dll, etc.)
    • Via Opera's address bar, access opera:config#VoiceXML|VoiceXMLEnabled and ensure it is checked
    • Similarly, access opera:config#VoiceXML|VoiceXmlPlugin and ensure it refers to OperaPortable\Data\profile\voice\vxmplugin.dll
    • Save preferences if necessary
    • Restart Opera
  • Select some text in a page displayed in Opera, right-click to bring up a context menu, and choose the "Speak" item

Tested (only the reading aloud portion) with Windows XP SP3.

Perhaps it will work with a 3.x series of VirtualBox...
I uninstalled 4.0.4 and installed 3.2.12 instead.  Importing worked with 3.2.12...

Best Text Editor / Re: jEdit is worth a closer look, too, meanwhile

Although it's a bit late perhaps, I offer my thanks for this topic.

I am looking at jEdit again and it definitely seems worth consideration.  The speed definitely seems to have improved considerably.

Thanks!

I tried Paragon Go Virtual here on a Windows XP SP3 machine with VirtualBox 4.0.4, unfortunately without success so far.

In VirtualBox, during an attempt of the File > Import Appliance ... sequence, I got basically the same result as in the following post:

http://forums.virtua....php?f=7&t=40673

Failed to import appliance -- snipped --.
Storage for the medium -- snipped -- is not created.
Result Code:
VBOX_E_INVALID_OBJECT_STATE (0x80BB0007)
Component:
Medium
Interface:
IMedium {9edda847-1279-4b0a-9af7-9d66251ccc18}

Perhaps it will work with a 3.x series of VirtualBox...

Any insight from others?

I've tried Dolphin HD once but found it slow compared to the stock browser.

Just tried Dolphin and I like it better than the stock browser, a lot easier to use, speed is about the same - thanks for mentioning it  :Thmbsup:
Trying out Dolphin recently too and have been finding its tab-related behavior preferable to the default Browser (nice to be able to switch tabs quickly with the volume hardware keys too).

A number of applications seem to use F11 for full-screen mode (e.g. IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, jEdit, SpeedCrunch, VLC)...it seems like it might be developing into a kind of convention.

General Software Discussion / Re: Java code help

FWIW, to use things like System.out.printf, String.format, and friends, I had more luck with beanshell2 than with ordinary beanshell:

http://code.google.com/p/beanshell2/

System.out.printf("num is %.2f\n", Math.PI);
System.out.print(String.format("%.2f", Math.PI));

May be it makes more sense to learn the printf format strings as they are used in other programming languages too...
