General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 14, 2008, 12:11 PM »
From what i understand, you don't need a "similar images finder", all you need is a "duplicate file finder", which is included in serveral alternative file explorers (like dopus) or, alternativelly, you could use a standalone tool, like this one.

disclaimer: i've never used dupfilefinder. It does look good, though :P

Deozaan: if you use opera or firefox, you can edit the search link and add it "&num=100", to have 100 results for the query. Notice that it'll only work when you use the search box or the address box.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA - A different type of computer timer
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 14, 2008, 11:06 AM »
Dshutdown's page has some cool freeware! :D
And DShutdown itself is pretty good work too.

Just to clarify, though, DShutdown only alows for 2 kinds of "wake up":

18. "WAKE ON LAN" to switch on one or more remote computers that support this function. The first time you select this option, the remote computer has to be on, otherwise DShutdown won't read the Mac-Address of the remote computer and it will issue an error message.

19. "WAKE UP" This option "wakes up" your computer from a hibernation or similar state, such as "suspend to RAM". It can be used as a simple alarm clock or to have a complete shutdown also when the local computer is in a suspended state.
-DShutdown's help file
Thus, i think it can't wake the computer from a cold start. (which makes sense, since not all computers have that BIOS timer that jovejupiter mentioned).

Hi misterfloppy.
I'm not saying your problem won't be fixed, but you can use dcupdater to keep up to date with all of DC's programs ;)

Here's the link to the original thread.

Ok, so it's something that will run a random program from some folder, in random intervals, right? (being that there is a max possible interval)

Actually, most of your questions, Carol, have already been discussed in a talk we had on irc.

I'll answer a few:

codeTrucker already can't log in to DC. Almost everything is deleted, though. But of course DC has lots of backups and all his posts have been recovered and are now waiting for a decision on what to do with them.

Regarding the "not change the post after 1 hour", we decided that it isn't that good of an idea, because there are several situations where it's useful to be able to edit the posts. (think minireviews, program update posts, etc).

Regarding the revision control system... Let's all force wordzilla to do it! :D

To each his owh. If you prefer firefox/ie to opera, that's your business. You can't say opera isn't the most secure browser, though. It's more than proved otherwise.

Still, if you only browse in internet cafes, lashiec is very right, you really shouldn't use the preinstalled browsers there.

Here are 2 solutions:
Portable Opera
Portable Firefox

Do you have a google account, chris? Maybe the "country" option unter "my account" / "Edit personal information" is wrong.

Are you in spain? :)

I suppose not, but if you were, that'd be normal.

To get back to the english version, go to "preferences" ("Preferencias"), on the main page, then select "english" in the " Idioma de la interfaz" pulldown menu and press "guardar preferencias" at the top-right. ;)

As f0dder said, you must distinguish between autorun and autoplay.
Autorun consists of reading a .ini file in the drive, and running the executable specified in that file. This is what makes viruses spread.
Autoplay consists of, when a drive is inserted, a dialog comes up with options like "read images", "read sounds", depending on the contents of the drive.

Now, the question here is that usb drives don't have Autorun, only cdroms. Thus, if you close the autoplay dialog, or select anything other than "run program" (which occasionally comes up in that dialog), or disable that dialog, there's no trouble.

Actually, i found the page. It's here.

And i made a graph:

I've attached to this post the .xls version of the graph data, in case you'd like to introduce this new information in your graphs. (if you'd like, i could do that, if you attached the .xls version)

What i really really would like to see would be some statistics on the growth of number of posts per month. I'm almost sure that the "rate/probability" of these words would keep the same throughout all the monts.

To be fair, since i joined DC almost 2 years ago, i haven't noticed any change in tendency or probability of "swear words" on DC.

PS: i believe this was already discussed enough in the other thread, i only made this post because your statistics made me get curious.

But it only displays the top 9 items with no way to "scroll" through the list.

that can be easily fixed. go to the "Options" and check the "Interface" tab then refer to the screenshot..

Also, adding "+sall" (without the quotes, stands for Show All) to your query will show you all the items matching it ;)

Living Room / Re: What kind of tagging system would be appropriate for DC?

At first, i was also interested in the new tagging system, but now, the more i think about it, the more i find it too complicated to really work.

First, it'd take a lot of manpower to implement it.
Second, it'd take a lot of manpower to maintain it (since a tagging system only becomes really useful when lots of posts are CORRECTLY tagged).
Third, i don't quite see the usefulness, since we already have a great search system, it only seems to benefit the "hide NSFW content" point of view, since the DC search is relly powerful (and thus the tagging wouldn't really bring an improvement on that).

My stand on this is: In terms of work/usefulness, a tag system is a fiasco, because more important things can be done with the time it'd take to implement/maintain it.

Thus, unless there's another great use for the tagging system, i wouldn't support it. (UNLESS there's someone that doesn't have much to do and would like to implement the tagging system and rectify wrong tags, etc... Then i'd be all in for it, as i don't think it'd make the forum worse :P)

PS: carol and app don't take me wrongly when i say "manpower", i just couldn't find a better word for it :)

PS2: i also like the "censored smilie" thing, though... I'd love to see posts with lots of those..  ;D ;D

Let's all search for a bunch of stupid domain names on their site (like aksdjhhvooosnnif or kioaoppxiucunt or akkujcmmfosp) to make them spend money in vain! :)

(don't tell me: they don't spend money reserving them)

Ok, done.

I attached a .zip to this post, with the .ahk source file and with a compiled version.

It checks every 5 seconds for changes in the SSID, and if so, it compares the current SSID against a pre-defined list of SSIDs specified in the .ini file, and if it detects the current one is one of them, it launches the associated action.

I think the .ini file is self-explanatory, but if you have some trouble, just post here ;)
