If you want to review board games, i just saw this post at a good site -- so if you are interested in becoming a board game reviewer..

"In a June 2009 column on my approach to writing game reviews, I mentioned that I have stacks of comped games waiting to be reviewed. Rather than have those games sit forever and a day until I have time to play them all, I thought it best to solicit reviewers who would be willing to tackle one or more of these games as well as future releases. What am I looking for in a game reviewer? "

Newsletter for July 27th, 2009
Codename "30 Days of Screencasts"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.  As of this month we are sending out about 70,000 copies of each newsletter by email.  Ok down to brass tacks: What's new on the DonationCoder.com website this month?

Firstly let me tell you about some updates to a few of my programs.  Screenshot Captor, my popular screenshot grabbing tool, has received a major new set of features to provide scanner support.  I hope people will find it useful -- if you do, let me know.  And as usual my Find and Run Robot searching/launching tool has had a few minor updates -- the active community of FARR users and plugin writers on the site keeps me busy adding and tweaking features (either that or it's because every time I fix one thing I seem to break another).  I also ended up getting tricked into completely re-writing BrowserTraySwitch, my program that switches between default browsers.  In order to accommodate the new versions of Windows (Vista and Win7) I had to completely change the way it worked.  Hopefully this will be good news to all ten people on planet Earth that use the program.  Another one of my programs, LaunchBar Commander, has been getting a little more attention lately, and I started a thread where people can post screenshots of it in action; some fun surprises there -- everyone seems to configure it a little differently.

Secondly, we received word that DC member Carl Thorpe has agreed to help out in organizing discounts again for the site.  That's a great thing because I'm bad at it and Carl is great at it.  In section 2 of the newsletter there's a link to a thread where you can let Carl know which shareware programs and companies you'd like to see him pursue for discounts.

Thirdly, hard core DC members and stuffed animal aficionados will no doubt remember that I posted pictures of the very cute Baby Cody plushie we commissioned based on our site mascot.  Well we've decided to send him around the world to visit people on the site who want to host him.  DC member Carol Haynes convinced me to set up a mini forum section for him to document his travel adventures, and as a place where people can post requests for a visit from him.  I think it's safe to say that I am not the only one jealous that he is getting to spend so much time traveling around the world.  If you want him to stop by your house or dormitory, just make a post in his area and get on the list.

Next, let me mention here so you have it in your records, that DC site admin John Sennesael (Gothic) and I set up a backup forum on a separate web server, which can be activated if the main site ever goes down.  You'll find a link to it below.  If for any reason the main DC site goes down, that site should be up with the latest info about the problem.

Lastly, and falling into the "what have i gotten myself into" category, is this.. I have promissed to make 30 screencast demo videos in the month of August, highlighting various features of my programs.  For you mathematicians, that's one video per day, minus 1 as a protest against the idea that months have different numbers of days in them.  I'm also trying to encourage other coders on the site to make and post screencasts of their software, but I doubt any will be as stupid as me and try to do one per day.  I hope you'll at least stop by and see if I manage to stick with it the entire month without succumbing to exhaustion.  Wish me luck and help me spread the word please! They should serve as a good way to learn about the programs and various unusual features.

2. Your Participation Requested

We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to jump in.

3. Giveaways and Discounts ending this month - only a few days left

Because of the lateness of this newsletter, you have only a few more days to take advantage of July's discounts on Sufulater (website snippet manager) and RecentX (file finder and recent document manager).

4. DonationCoder Updates

There have been a number of updates to DC Software since the last newsletter:

5. Coding Snacks and DC Member Stuff

The Coding Snacks Section is where people can request small utilities to be coded while they wait.  Since the last newsletter we've had a *LOT* of new requests that have been filled -- several forum members are on fire lately!  We've also got a few new member mini-reviews this month:

6. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into to sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

7. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

8. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

9. Developer's Corner

If you're not a developer, don't let the title of this section scare you away. There is probably something of interest to you on the Developer's Corner. It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  And it's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last few months -- keep it up people!

10. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar produces wonderful weekly summaries of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  We're still wondering how he keeps up the pace and when will he collapse from exhaustion?

let me ask -- if you manually start moving the mouse to the right in the scroll bar area -- at what point does the sidebar pop up -- before the mouse hits the right edge of scrollbar area?

It's also the kind of thing you might be able to hire someone to do.

Ironically, often the most difficult part of hiring a programmer for a task is not the actually coding but in figuring out exactly how the program should work and behave and look and feel.  But if you have some existing code and just want it upgrading or translated into a different language, it's much more of a straightforward task.

Strange.. does it have anything to do with where your mouse is when you initiate the capture?
Your hidden taskbar.. is it a built in windows type taskbar or providing by some other utility?
What might be causing it to pop up -- is there a hotkey that might trigger it or does it normally only come up when the mouse is in a certain location?

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Opening files through LBC
« Last post by mouser on July 26, 2009, 12:26 PM »
Thank you very much for the detailed bug report BG12 -- I'm going to try to correct the problem in LBC.

In the meantime, can you try this to solve the problem with space in the file path: enclose the entire path in double quotes.
In other words, in the argument section, put something like "C:\My Documents\My Folder\My File.xls"

Let me know if that works.

I definitely think you would be better off upgrading the code to a current version of VB or whatever langauge you are going to use.  Trying to use it in such an out of date development environment is only going to cause you pain.

Screenshot Captor / Re: New scanner features for Screenshot Captor
« Last post by mouser on July 26, 2009, 01:27 AM »
Some more info on the new scanner features, from the help file:

There are plenty of utilities designed to help you scan images with your scanner and manipulate them, some free and some commercial (e.g. Paperport).
And most modern scanners come bundled with a scanning utility or two.

So why add scanning functionality to Screenshot Captor?

Screenshot Captor is designed to stay resident in your system tray, and make it easy for you to take lots of multiple screenshots with little intervention.

The scanner functionality in Screenshot Captor follows the same philosophy -- it aims to help you do very quick scanning of multiple documents.

It's also designed to perform the common image corrections, and includes special functions for automatically and manually detecting the foreground of scans, cropping, and adjusting for small rotation alignment problems.

The program also makes it easy for you to do things like:
  • Save in different formats (including PDF).
  • Print images.
  • Email images.
  • Configure hotkeys to start a capture.

To enable scanning functionality in Screenshot Captor, go to the Scanner Options tabs in the program preferences, enable the scanner features checkbox, and choose your scanner.

Screenshot Captor supports both TWAIN and WIA scanner interfaces, and can be configured to use the native scanner dialog for your scanner or bypass it completely.

Screenshot Captor registers itself as an official imaging application in Microsoft Windows, so if you have buttons on your scanner, you can configure these buttons to trigger an automatic scan inside Screenshot Captor (or manually configure a shortcut that passes the -scan commandline parameter).

I'm really interested to hear from people who use the scanner functions.. bound to be some rough edges still.

EDIT - I split off discussion of scanning functions to this thread: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=19324.0
Let's have discussions about scanning features there.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.107.04 beta - Sep 23, 2012
« Last post by mouser on July 26, 2009, 01:04 AM »
minor release:
Version 2.75.01 - July 26st, 2009
  • [Minor Feature] Attempt to speed up first display by pre-checking file existence in history.
  • [Minor Feature] You can now use the dolaunch alias command (which launches a result without user having to hit enter), to restart the search, and simulate them pressing enter using \n.
  • [BugFix] The dolaunch alias that was used to show an html page was clearing the page before it could be seen.
18770
Latest release:

v2.70.01 - July 26th, 2009
  • [MajorFeature] Full support of scanning functionality -- you can now use SC as your scanning tool of choice.
  • [MinorFeature] Discarding an image from quick popup now clears the image display, and doesn't perform any postcapture stuff.
  • [MinorFeature] Image Effects/Color Dialog is now forced to a large size over the original image.
  • [Feature] New second-instance commandline option passing; you can now pass commandline arguments when you call Screenshot Captor, and if an instance is already running -- these arguments will be passed to the FIRST instance while the second silently exits.
  • [Feature] New commandline arguments to begin a scan or initiate a capture.
  • [Feature] Screenshot Captor now registers itself as a potential target of Windows WIA/ImageCapture services -- so scanner buttons can be programmed to launch it and initiate a capture (or call with -scan on commandline manually).
  • [BugFix] The %file% parameter in external commandline tools was being cleared on startup.
  • [BugFix] Print configurations (margins, stretch) were not being properly saved and restored.
  • [BugFix] The post-capture popup dialog was sometimes not selectable without using alt-tab or keyboard to bring it to focus.
  • [BugFix] The post-capture popup dialog was hiding the save as and print dialogs.
  • [MinorFeature] Added support for custom commandline args in external file explorer/image editor, by using $$1 where file/folder should be specified.

SC now registers itself as an application that can handle scanner button requests (unless run in portable mode), so you can trigger SC to scan when you push a button on your scanner.
