General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol Plus or AnVir Task Manager?
« Last post by Curt on January 20, 2013, 02:59 AM »
AnVir installed 3 utilities all of which scan for various things (registry errors, PC performance, outdated drivers) and then asks for payment/install prior to finishing.

I too would  like programs not to try selling me things I didn't ask for. However, I #know# by experience that such practice is commonly used in the software world, so I always watch carefully what I am clicking "Yes/Okay/Next" to, when I install a program. Of course even more if the program is new to me. Don't you? I mean, you too will say that that software trialing isn't for blind or mindless people, right?

You said "AnVir installed 3 utilities". I say, Yes, that is sad, but first you told it to!  ;)

General Software Discussion / SoftMaker eM Client 5
« Last post by Curt on January 19, 2013, 02:13 PM »
The road from eM Client 3.5 to version 5 has not been long, but is at least a free upgrade.

SoftMaker eM Client Professional 5
E-mails, tasks, events, and contacts...

SoftMaker eM Client Professional 5, which is part of SoftMaker Office Professional 2012, competently manages your e-mails, events, tasks, and contacts:

Its powerful e-mail module lets you receive, create, and manage e-mail messages.

Tasks and events are taken care of by SoftMaker eM Client Professional, too. You can keep them locally on your PC, but you can also connect to calendars of friends and colleagues over the Internet.

SoftMaker eM Client Professional stores your personal and business contacts on your PC, but also synchronizes them over the Internet.

The built-in chat program lets you stay in touch with your friends, regardless of whether they use MSN, ICQ, Google Chat, or Facebook Chat.
-SoftMaker

By the way, eM is made in USA, even though SoftMaker is  German:

which is the free web storage service that offers the biggest amount of data?

-you may soon learn that the amount of space is less important than the available upload speed. I had a cheap backup-in-the-cloud for unlimited space, but realized it would take me a year to fully upload, because of the (lack of) upload speed.

« Last post by Curt on January 18, 2013, 06:48 AM »
I also use WinPatrol and AnVir Task Manager Pro (both for control of startup),
and Zemana AntiLogger

-that was 9 months ago. In the long run I got tired of answering so many pop-up questions, so I stopped trialing so many weird programs, and removed WinPatrol and Zemana. WinPatrol is really fine, but - I don't have the energy right now to go into details - I simply like the pro version of AnVir better. Of course it is not alone, I am also running Outpost Security Suite Pro at the same time.

If one is in the habit of testing many "unknown" programs, or visiting many dubious sites, I will think WinPatrol is a little more strict / trustworthy than AnVir.

It seems the problem may also have been caused by the third-party software authors, rather than just by Windows 8:

What is new in version 3.0

Fixed issue that prevented many Hot-Keys from working on Windows 8.  You can once again use WINDOWS+V and many other Hot-Key combinations.

-I only installed Photoshop. Well, at first I also installed Acrobat Pro 8, but it didn't run well, so I removed it and decided not to install the suite. But just typing this is making me think I should install it! I think my main reason for not having done so yet is, that I haven't checked out what Illustrator really is, so I don't know what I am missing...

I wonder how Scribus would do...

-mixed...
Scribus was not able to properly read any of my homemade pdf files. It would open them, but not show any content. These were made with various Pdf desktop 'creators", like Nitro. On the other hand Scribus was doing very fine with a Pdf file created by Wikipedia. Even though the document was written in Danish, it was almost 100% right, and ready for editing. Wow!

Scribus comes in many languages, incl. Danish.

I was somewhat surprised by what you didn't tell, tomos! But maybe your post was made a few hours before Scribes announced version 1.42 later the same day. It has a new engine, so now they also offer a genuine 64-bit version :-)

Edit:
Near-reading the fore-mentioned Scribus version of a Wikipedia Pdf file, I now realize that every "active" (Wikipedia linked) word is missing!

the only usable way is to first calculate the total height (and width) of the two pictures and then click "New..." and put in the new dimensions. And then slowly drag the top picture down. Paint was never meant for more than a single photo, in fact it was never meant for a photo! But thankfully the world is full of "competitors", so tell us why you want to use Paint.

I recommend not updating Greasemonkey at the moment. Version 1.6 has given my Waterfox annoying delays and "does not answer". When I disabled Greasemoneky, the problem disappeared.

General Software Discussion / cloud clipboard €20

but I thought the major feature should interest someone

NEW: CloudClippy 2013: Your Clipboard 2.0

With CloudClippy you can send text snippets, photos or other files from one PC to the next -- all with just one mouse click

CloudClippy allows you to share files directly from the clipboard with family members and friends quickly and directly.

And with CloudClippy you can keep your clipboards between multiple PCs in sync. It allows you "Copy & Paste" between multiple PCs.

This is how CloudClippy works in detail:

    Synchronous clipboards between multiple PCs
Fast sharing of text snippets, photos or other files via a secure web URL
History: Access to previous contents of your clipboard

With just one click CloudClippy creates you a private link which you can share with your friends. CloudClippy even contains an automatic image recognition function. Photos can be easily viewed online via a link.

When working with your normal Windows clipboard you have only access to the last element in your clipboard. CloudClippy creates an extension to that - a "History" of recent entries. CloudClippy remembers selected items from the clipboard. These text snippets, photos or other files can be reloaded at any time to the clipboard.

If several files are in the clipboard, they are automatically archived in a ZIP file in front of the data transfer to minimize the data download.

More information is available at: http://www.abelssoft...net/apps/cloudclippy

I do need to create a draft layout that wont be published anyway, so I might try it, thanks

-of course there is also the 'free' Adobe InCopy / InDesign CS2...

http://www.adobepres...article.asp?p=466357

------------

Adobe desktop publishing software

Adobe InCopy is a professional word processing application made by Adobe Systems. It is integrated to Adobe InDesign; however, it is sold separately and is not included in any Creative Suite edition; the current version is Adobe InCopy CS6. This desktop publishing software is primarily used to publish newspapers and magazines and is used primarily by editors.

InCopy allows the editor to write, edit, and design (style, font, etc.) the publishable copy. The software includes standard word processing features such as "spell check", "track changes", and "word count", etc., and has preview viewing modes for fitting copy to the text layout, allowing the editor to visually ascertain every design element fits in the publication layout format used.

Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software application produced by Adobe Systems. It can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers and books. InDesign can also publish content suitable for tablet devices in conjunction with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.

Graphic designers and production artists are the principal users, creating and laying out periodical publications, posters, and print media. It also supports export to EPUB and SWF formats to create digital publications, and content suitable for consumption on tablet computers. The Adobe InCopy word processor uses the same formatting engine as InDesign.

General Software Discussion / Babylon 10
« Last post by Curt on January 14, 2013, 07:59 AM »
The people behind Babylon translation software have been working on a new version. Now it has been launched, so I downloaded it with great eager, because I was a huge fan of Babylon 6, a modest fan of version 7, a user of version 8, and a disappointed owner of a useless "lifetime" license key to version 9. Now the big question is of course, if this new version will make me a huge fan again?

They have introduced some changes, but I feel certain the changes only apply to the look of the program, the GUI, not the program itself (except that Win 8 now is supported). It still doesn't work with Firefox -  and I don't want to use Internet Explorer.

I can recommend Babylon 10 only if you are using Internet Explorer. edit: I haven't tested the combination.

Oh, I wanted to tell you a lot more about version 10,
but right now I am so disappointed with these people,
that I will stop right here.

@tomos - if the goal is print, not pdf, then X5 is excellent. If Pdf > not really.
I disagree with brotman on Serif's pdf capabilities, prior to X6 (which is fine):
Before X5 it was merely "import Pdf", never "Save as Pdf". X5 was merely Pdf 1.3

Does any one know if this CS2 (from 2005) will install & run on a 64-bit Win 7?

 :tellme:

oh, I've found the answer:

Note CS2 isn't compatible (at least officially) with Vista or later.

I'm still using Photoshop from CS3 on Win7 x64 so hopefully CS2 will still run ok.

CS3 is fully Windows 7 compat - CS2 isn't

I enjoy the benefits of having my Java plugins enabled, and have not yet been given any valid reason why they shouldn't be. And Yes, I've read the linked page(s), but I don't trust people who mistakes a cracker for a nuclear bomb. Secondly, the question in mind was her iPhone, not my PC.

But I thank you all for telling your thoughts on the matter.
