It contains security updates, and thus it seems it should NOT be removed (I wonder if CCleaner touches these ones). More information

Phew! I thought you were upgrading your main computer and so I was fearing I recommended you such card. I doubt so, it'll run but I suspect it won't be as capable as your 7600, just starting by the memory (DDRD2 vs. DDR3, faster the latter), and then staring at cold numbers (memory bandwidth and fill rate) shows that the 7600 beats the 8500 by a x2 factor. But well, you can test it yourself when you assemble the computer ;)

(On a side note: Hooray! 500 posts!)

Yeah, but in 5 years you'll be running a computer with 320 cores ;D

Macrovison owns Realtek? Or do Macrovision develop the software used by Realtek chips? *Hugs his Analog Devices chip*

I've just read your comment about Gothic 3 on tinjaw's giveaway post, and so I just logged to ask something: are you planning to use this new computer with the card I recommended you to play Gothic 3?

(No, you aren't, no, you aren't, no...)

Expensive, it's better do what you suggest. Thanks anyway!

Wait, wait, wait, are you telling me that you arranged all the icons in your desktop in a heart-shaped menu? Groovy! :P

So, although a hint of my desktop was published in another thread (a tough guy and some hilarious looking thugs blocked part of it), let's publish the latest version. It's still WIP, most of the icons will head for Recycle Bin Village, some software is not running as I have to configure something here and there and the desktop theme will change. The background also changes in every boot, thanks to Wallpaper Master.

Slashdot is another victim of the whole Internet meme. No, not a new meme, I'm talking about the Internet itself. If you remember that post of Jeff Atwood two weeks ago with tips to make a good blog, one of them talked about copying and rehashing things you heard about in other blogs. Well, all tech sites are more or less like that, a visit to one or two is enough to be in sync with the current news. Heck, even a visit to the major newspapers will suffice most of the times. So Slashdot have to find another way to be 'cool'. Sadly, it hopped the Digg bandwagon (it's not that I read Slashdot before, anyway ;D)

tinjaw, if there's some way of shipping packages outside the USA for those $4, even if they take years to reach their destination, I would gladly relieve you of some games ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Stay Away From Microsoft VISTA
« Last post by Lashiec on September 01, 2007, 06:05 AM »
A shadow copy? I thought Vista implemented the file redirection via symbolic links, if they have that feature in the SO, why create a new copy for every file a program create in its own directory? For antivirus software, that could be a nightmare, but I suppose Vista editions of those apps will do things right.

EDIT: After reading some things about the capabilities of Windows Vista filesystem, I have found out that there is no way to use folder junctions for files, the only way to implement what I thought I was talking about up here. So forget about the first paragraph, as I believed that symbolic links was a completely different thing that, as I say, does not exist. Basically, Microsoft made a mess IMO with the new possibilities they introduced for Vista filesystem, have a look here for more information. You have everything, including the kitchen sink, but not the essential feature that would made file redirection work as it should, that is, file junctions.

The ASUS card head on. It's the best of the three, better than the Leadtek because of the company, and better than the Gigabyte because it's DirectX10 compliant and does not sport the infamous "Turbo Cache". Both are silent so... the only thing you're missing with the Asus is the "Xpand Rally" game that comes with the Gigabyte, but don't worry, I have a copy if you wish :)

My friend, your question really puzzled me. It seems that you don't have to worry, apparently that connector is used when you're running a SLI combo, and was used to power high-end AGP cards (not that it's used here) as well.

Anyway, if you buy a somewhat powerful card, most need a 6-pin PCI-e connector, so the lack of that connector is out of question.

Ah, the whole thing is complicated ;D

One has 20 pins in the connector and the other 24 ;D

OK, enough jokes. The 24-pin connector is the most current specification, ATX v2.2. The extra 4 pins were added to give enough power for the PCI-Express slot, for graphic cards that lack the 6-pin PCI-e connector. In "older" motherboards, there used to be an extra 4-pin connector, that was rectangular, not squared like the one used for the ATX extra connector (the little one located near the purple printer port in the ASRock mainboard)

That is true, but most software don't play nice with the shell. And probably you'll have to pay for that software, while most of TC's addons are free, that's a huge plus. But well, you're the developer of xplorer², so you know more than me about interaction of your software with Windows, I'm a mere user.

(Hmmm, and this is turning into a discussion about file managers ;))

Hmmm, Dr. Windows installed in the right computers could make a tech support guy rich. Hey, wreckedcarzz, if that app is "green" (that is, it doesn't leave any trace in the filesystem or the registry, as it's self-contained in its own folder) I might throw it around via IM...

Use Total Uninstall to monitor installations and removing the crap afterwards. You have to learn how things work in Windows before being able to use it correctly, but it's worth the effort. Since I began to use almost three years ago, computers ran as fast as they should. BTW, if you give it a try, monitor only trivial software, like games and apps, forget about drivers and Windows updates, as it could do more harm than benefit.

General Software Discussion / Re: Free Download Manager 2.5 released
« Last post by Lashiec on August 29, 2007, 09:59 AM »
Just for clarification, the site is flagged as harmful because of the content hosted at its download section. Apparently, the guys wanted to develop a Download.com-like site, but without taking any measurements in the software included. So avoid that particular section like the plague.

Me too, my mainboard is using a nForce 570 SLI chipset, and it performs wonderfully, but giving lanux conditions, this is the best he can get without investing 200$ in that Asus mainboard. VIA gave me good results in the past, they're not up to the level of performance of nVidia chipsets, but they do a decent job. Some blame could be put onto Intel and AMD, particularly Intel, which VIA accused time ago of being bastards when it came to provide license renewal for they can produce chipsets for the Core 2 Duo.

General Software Discussion / Free Download Manager 2.5 released
« Last post by Lashiec on August 29, 2007, 09:07 AM »
After a beta testing phase, the guys in charge of Free Download Manager released a new version of their well-known software, including new and surprising features, as well as a nice touch towards clearing the reputation of their software.

What’s new:
  • Flash video download
  • Audio / video files converter
  • Bittorent support
  • Easy file sharing
  • Remote control
  • Portable mode
  • Metalink support
  • General Public License
  • Multilanguage support (desired language may be chosen during installation)

It seems the guys want you to use their software for all your downloading needs ;D. The most important part is the use of the "General Public License", or the GPL, which means the source code for the software is available, and hosted on SourceForge. So now everyone can take a peek at the code to see if something suspicious is lurking there (the software, or more precisely, the page was flagged as harmful by SiteAdvisor in the past).

Living Room / Interesting article on OSS licensing
« Last post by Lashiec on August 29, 2007, 08:54 AM »
Now that the software developing world, and OSS in particular, is in a turmoil thanks to the the imminent release of the GPLv3, I thought it would be a good idea to share this article I discovered time ago, but I forgot to post about. His author, byuu, is a skilled programmer, famous for his contributions to the romhacking scene (including his tough but delightful work in the hacking part of Der Langrisser) and his accurate SNES emulator, bsnes, which its license choice prompted him to write this article, where he share thoughts about the two major OSS licenses, BSD and GPL, the freedom that the two give both to the original programmer and those who want to use the code for their own works, the community behind them, and how the compromises you have to made choosing one or other inclined him to use a custom license to accommodate his needs and ideas on the subject.
