Living Room / Re: IRLDD NYC - Martin and app103
« Last post by app103 on February 08, 2012, 01:38 PM »
I am just unsure if i wanted to have asian food, when i'd visit the USA. I may prefer more "american specialities" instead. But every child should get the balloon in the color it wishes, shouldn't it? :)

If/when we meet, I already know what you are having for dinner. Fettuccine Alfredo, and I am doing the cooking. (remember?)

The whole "noodles in a box" thing is something Martin has wanted for a long time (after seeing a photo online) and keeps forgetting to get some. So I told him that when we met I would make sure he got some, and I did (even if they weren't in a box).

Living Room / IRLDD NYC - Martin and app103
« Last post by app103 on February 07, 2012, 11:18 PM »
I have known Martin for about 10 years, and today I finally got to meet him face to face for the very first time.

We had a lot of fun and a bit of an unplanned adventure.

Martin met me at the WTC PATH station and instead of going straight to lunch, we decided to find a place to have coffee and chat for awhile. And chat we did, for a lot longer than we had expected.

Martin in the coffee shop:
PICT0001.JPG

For whatever reason, I am not sure why, we created origami and gave each other some rather odd little souvenirs to take home. He made me a tiny little boat out of half of one of our coffee receipts, and I made him a paper cup/envelope out of the other half. (I also made something else he will post a photo of later.)

By the time we left the coffee shop, it wasn't lunch we were going to have, it was dinner.  ;D

Trying to find the place we had picked out [Koko Asian] wasn't easy. The street it was on ended at the PATH station and the numbers still weren't low enough, meaning the street had to continue elsewhere, probably beyond the train station. We chose to go around the station and turned right when we should have went left.

When you know where you are on your mental map but the map in your head is upside down, you end up walking in the opposite direction than you should. We spent quite awhile going around in circles till we finally found the restaurant, completely by accident.  :-[

The food was good, reasonably priced for NYC, and they gave you plenty of it. Martin's dream of coming to NYC and having "noodles in a box" was almost fulfilled, but rather than it being in a little white take-out box, it was served in a mini wok (we would have had to get it to go if we wanted the box part of the plan, and neither one of us was up to the task of finding somewhere outside, at night, to sit down and eat it.)

Martin at Koko:

Dinner of vegetable Lo Mein:

Got our waiter to take this photo of the 2 of us:
PICT0005.JPG

Martin was quite surprised that I had no difficulty understanding him. He thought his British accent might give me trouble. Before meeting him, I thought it might, too, but it turns out that even though he's a Brit, he really has much less of an accent than I would have expected. He sounds like what one would expect if he had lived in the US for the last 10 years.

About the only complaint I have with it is there's no button or link so I can send it's developers a contribution. There's nothing on the 7zip website for that either.

Have you tried Filebox Extender? Among other things, it adds a little heart on Explorer windows and open file dialog boxes that when clicked gives handy access to a menu of bookmarked folders.

When WinZip moved from 9.0 to 10.0 they asked everyone to pay again. I didn't and continue to use my old 9.0 version, but I only use it to zip files from Explorer's context menu, for distribution on the web. I don't assume people have something else installed to support extracting other formats.

For my own locally stored archives and for extracting stuff acquired elsewhere, I use WinRar from Explorer's context menu, the free anniversary version (3.5) they gave away back around 2006.

If WinRar can't do the job then I reach for 7zip, which has only happened once or twice.

I wasn't too thrilled when WinZip decided not to honor their previous lifetime licenses, and took an approach into scaring people to upgrade. They introduced proprietary technology and attempted to plant the thought in their user's heads that if they didn't pay up that they would one day find themselves with zip files they couldn't open. You were expected to pay and upgrade because "everyone else is doing it".

I knew better and decided not to encourage them. Anyone with any sense in their heads would shun their new proprietary stuff, knowing that not everyone would be able to extract it. Therefore any version of WinZip above v9.0 is a complete waste of money.

Thing about these GOTD programs though as I'm sure many of you have found, is that they can't be reinstalled after a system trash.  Have also found that the reg codes on some programs have mysteriously vanished due to over-aggressive registry scrubbing; my fault I guess.  Best action, of coarse, is to just buy the program at a discount which is often offered.
-Midnight Rambler (February 06, 2012, 04:04 PM)

The XYPlorer that is being given away is portable and nothing is written to the registry except uninstall info, which means once you have installed it, back up the folder and use that to "reinstall" it. The main restriction on the version that is being given away is there are no upgrading privileges. But if you can live with this version as-is, you could get many of years of use from it, across many PCs, until Windows itself progresses to a point where this version is not compatible with the operating system.

"Always pay cash or use credit card(s) in different name(s)"

It's unAmerican not to take every opportunity to drive yourself deeper and deeper into debt. How dare anyone avoid interest charges by paying cash for anything, in this modern day and age of banking cartels controlling our government! How dare you poor people not have any credit cards of your own. How dare you loan your credit card to a teenage child whose last name differs from your own. You are all terrorists, the whole lot of you.

Happily, there is a new extension that's even better: Custom Buttons.

THANK YOU!  :-*

I have been a user of CB2 for a long time and didn't know that my existing buttons from that were compatible with the original extension. I installed the original and disabled CB2, restarted my browser and didn't have to recreate my buttons. They were all still there and working.

I also did not know that the original extension was still in development. CB2 is not and was one of the many reasons why I have resisted upgrading.

Would you happen to know if button sharing is supported in the original? I have code saved as a local .html file, for one-click installation of the buttons, which serves as a backup for my button code and I have resisted publishing it on my website due to the CB2 extension not working with newer versions of Firefox and no hope of being updated. (last update was Sept. 2009)

Perhaps change the I-Beam cursor to something else that is easier to see?

My personal favorite is an animated one that just cycles through some color changes that makes it easier to see, regardless of the color background that is behind it.

Try the jc-i-beam.ani cursor from the set attached to this post.

This is a very old set. The creator's website doesn't exist any more, but the readme in the zip did say redistribution is ok.

So... I waited another year ... When they decided to repeat the same friggin stunt, again...and raised the drinking age to 21. Needless to say, I was pissed.
So, you really hadn't waited at all  ;D

Hey, I did the same thing, then gave up drinking when I was 20.  :D

What other birthdays matter?

Your child's 18th birthday, when you can legally throw them out of the house. Which is why parents that can't remember their own age, tend to remember the ages of their children (at least till they move out).   :P

Hardly surprising considering some emoloyment studies have shown that access to social sites (i.e. Facebook) during work hours is more important than total financial compensation to many 20-somethings entering the labor pool. Supposedly, many have taken lower paying jobs just to get it. And savvy employers are taking advantage of that.

No, no, no! You take the higher paying job...the one that will allow you to afford an internet capable mobile phone, and then use the mobile version of Facebook and Twitter till you get home. Screw the company's internet policies! Carry your own in your pocket if you need it that bad. What is wrong with people?  :tellme:

My middle name has been Rice Krispies (snap, crackle, pop) since I was a teenager.  :-[

And in less than 6 weeks, you'll have enough extra to buy yourself a microwave for your office, and another 6 weeks after that to afford your own mini-fridge, both of which you get to keep (or sell to another employee) when you terminate your employment.

(If you are allowed to do so...)

True, but the point is that you can afford it whether or not you can actually do it, and that wouldn't be the case if you let them manage your money for you.
1896
When you accept a perk over the cash equivalent, you are in reality making a deal to let someone else manage your money, with no say or control over how it is spent.

They may very well claim that the breakfast they supply you is worth $8/day, but that's only if you are letting them spend your money for you. You can supply the same bagel and cream cheese for $3.50/week if you manage your money yourself, leaving you with an extra $36.50/week in your pocket.

Don't be afraid of supermarkets. They offer a better deal than your employer. And in less than 6 weeks, you'll have enough extra to buy yourself a microwave for your office, and another 6 weeks after that to afford your own mini-fridge, both of which you get to keep (or sell to another employee) when you terminate your employment.

Don't let other people manage your money for you unless you know you can trust them, will be in full control, and can revoke their access at any time...and get that in writing.

Asutype was the first and only text expander I have ever used. It's primary usage is as a spelling corrector, but it has text expander capabilities. It fails in usage with GTK applications, so I can't use it with Xchat, and since I can't use it for spelling correction in that, I really don't have a use for it any more. Almost every other app I use has a spell checker built in, and I only really get fouled up when using a chat client.

Google just petered out. Their effort was just f*****g lame.

I was rather frustrated that they didn't even make an effort to make it easier for those using their Blogger service to opt in to blacking out their blogs. They couldn't add a blackout option to their control panel to make it easy? I don't think I was asking too much from a company that voiced opposition to SOPA and had the means to do this.

I was rather angry that I had to go through the trouble to code a special template to do it. I shouldn't have had to do that.

However, I was amused by this
Someone released a tiny little piece of javascript code that bloggers could add to their existing template that would redirect their visitors to my template demo page, rather than having to apply the actual template itself.  ;D
