Developer's Corner / PayPal fee change dust-up
« Last post by mouser on August 23, 2009, 05:42 AM »
This doesn't necessarily seem like a bad thing to me, but it has caused some confusion, and it's definitely something to be aware of if you are sending money to friends and family:

In June, PayPal made a number of changes to its User Agreement and posted an update to the PayPal Blog. At that time, director of product marketing Heinz Waelchli wrote that PayPal had now begun allowing those with business and premium accounts to make personal transfers to friends and family for free. This, in itself, is a welcome update—I use my PayPal account to receive payments for items I sell on Etsy, but now I can send money to my brother from the same account without either of us having to give PayPal a cut.

What PayPal failed to do was inform users of the fact that any transfer having to do with goods or services will be charged the 3¢ + 2.9 percent fee no matter who or where it's coming from. This includes payments sent from personal accounts as well as payments made after someone has sent you a request for payment (even if that request has nothing to do with goods or services).
...
For example, a personal account sending another personal account money for a one-time payment for, say, mowing your lawn was not previously charged any fees on either side, but is now charged the usual transaction fee (the sender gets to decide who pays). The only way to avoid this is by selecting "gift" when making the transfer —something you can't do if you're following through on a purchase or invoice from someone.

i just meant that if you intend to think of them as well-edited, thoughtful, complete articles, then the requirements might be different, and you might aim not for short concise things, but very well organized and structured presentation that only a few people will really read, and less will comment on, but could be a more permanent resource for people who are super serious about the material.  but that's like writing an academic paper and is a lot more work.

Here's one of those very cool one-man development sites filled with useful utilities.  This one is called "the sz".
Some really cool looking network tools and other utilities, and the author seems open to feature requests.  Clearly a very skilled coder.

A quick list of utility names to give you a flavor of the site:
Doro::Free PDF Printer , Last.FM Downloader , York::Network Traffic Trace , Hotmail Email Notifier , Flash Builder/Flash Player , Homedale::WLAN Monitor , PortScan , Yale::Network Usage , Nassau::Network Info , Royal::RSS Reader , SpyEx , Parkdale::SpeedTest  , Carroll::Resolution Per User , VisualCVS , mod_auth_msfix , Bear::GDI Usage , RequestTrace , NetChat , Quartz , Rimhill , CDInfo , CheckSum , PE Header Patcher , SZ_OS

This is donationware, so if you like his stuff send him a donation!

libeco and jammo you are the first 2 to reply.. happy to send off 2 mugs by the way, so no one will be turned away.

keep in mind jammo -- that sample screenshot i sent has too much info on it, and its not just a matter of coming up with a different layout for showing that info -- somehow a cleaner screen is needed.  agentsteal is willing to change things in the code to make it better match a good UI.  so i think best thing might be for me to get agentsteal to contact you guys.

hopefully this coming week.
i've been delayed in updating some of my programs because i've been busy working on screencast videos for them.

Paul,

This is a completely meta critique, but let me PLEAD with you to try to make (much) smaller posts, boiling down your thoughts into pieces that you can make multiple posts from.  I'm just dying to read and comment on this stuff but it's just too much at a time to get a firm hold on and post a cogent reply about.

If you aim for a post that is like a half page long, with just one major point -- then we can all jump in and participate, and you can elaborate in follow ups.

Alternatively..
Instead of viewing them as posts, they could be viewed as articles, not meant so much for discussion but for a thoughtful structured presentation.  If that's to be the case, then what would help is a hierarchical organization of your points in small manageable chunked sections no more than half a page each.

No matter how you look at it, speaking as one who has committed this sin myself innumerable times -- there just has to be a way to organize and post these really thoughtful and valuable writings in a much more concise way.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Output to Farr's memo mode
« Last post by mouser on August 21, 2009, 07:22 PM »
no need for it -- it's built into farr now.
as a test, check out the runcap alias that comes default with farr now -- it's in the systools alias or something like that.
to test it do:
runcap ping.exe 127.0.0.1
then go examine the runcap alias to see how its done.
18516
ok, my mistake then.. sorry :(
didn't realize we were talking about a FF extension called "Launchy" -- I suppose that makes a lot more sense now that it is being discussed in this thread.
Sorry!! I'll go hide in the corner in shame.

I have a bunch of samsung 204b lcd monitors that i've always loved, until in the past few years they started to stop working.
They gradually die, flickering, working for a few weeks, then stopping to turn on with a blinking power light.

Turns out it's a well known problems with these samsung lcds, due to faulty capacitors.

After some bad experiences with samsung tech support, I found this howto guide on the web that tells you how to fix the monitors with a few parts and a soldering iron:

While it wasn't something i felt comfortable doing, john (the dc server admin) and wife is staying with me for a bit and he's a real hotshot with a soldering iron, and he managed to do the repair in under an hour.

Monitor now works as good as new.

Anyone using an external app link launcher alternative to Launchy?

well i mean you really DO have a point --
they keep messing with features that probably get used by 1 out of 100 people, once per year.

where the editing of email text messages happens many times per day by every user -- so it's not so much to ask to get this right.

Without auto-format, I can't go back and edit a paragraph and have it automatically reflow and rewrap. I'd have to use the Alt-L trick to fix the paragraph after I've finished editing it.

that's what i use.
it is a bit annoying i agree.  but it's just a minor annoyance for me.

Joto is one of the funnest and friendliest persons in our irc chat channel.. He brightens up the whole place and you'd be hard pressed to find another with such a friendly disposition.

In fact there is something called "Joto Hour" in the chat channel, which happens at 1am, which is when Joto usually signs on, and there is always much celebrating.

From the Raymond.cc blog today:

Without a doubt that The Unlocker is the best and its one of my must-install software after I’ve finished installing Windows. If you don’t know what is Unlocker for, it is a utility used to determine what file a process is using if a user tried to delete it, and displays a list of processes as well as choices on what to do with the process (kill task, unlock, etc.) along with a list of file function options (delete, rename, move).
...
However, until today there’s no update to support 64 bit of Windows XP/Vista/7. If you’ve been searching high and low for an alternative, look no further because LockHunter does the same thing as Unlocker and it supports both 32 and 64 bit of Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and 7. Most importantly it is free and very light in system resource usage.
