would you want it to sort them permanently on request, in the configuration dialog?
or just dynamically at runtime?

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: Commercial Application
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2009, 12:39 PM »
I know that you can buy such cutters that will shop the page into business card sheets -- i've seen them being used for just this kind of application.  But i'm not familiar with the brands and models.  I don't think they do the collating, but you can set up Flipbook printer to print books in an order that makes it easy to cut a bunch of pages and just stack the sub-stacks, which should make it easy.

--

Please remember that the current licensing for Flipbook Printer forbids its commercial use without my explicit permission.

--

I have actually been discussing recently with people the possibility of selling the exclusive rights for commercial use of flipbook printer.

I get inquiries on a fairly regular basis by event coordinators and photographers about licensing it for commercial use, and I'm simply not in a good position to manage such licensing.  Others have expressed an interest in using it for larger volume promotional printings.

In short, I think the time has come for me to sell the commercial rights to the program, and I expect to do so by the end of the year.

It's possible (likely?) that whoever purchases the rights will want to license it to people who are interested in using the software for commercial purposes; and I'm happy to try to coordinate these interests while figuring out details of any sales.

I'm interested in finding a good owner for the software who can make good use of it, and ideally develop a longer term relationship that would involve improving the program and coding new related tools.

If you are interested in the use of Flipbook Printer you can email me ([email protected]).

Screenshot Captor / Re: Auto scroll problem - open with screenshot captor
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2009, 12:28 PM »
hi robbero, great questions.

ok so let me try to address a few:
1. i'll have to take a look at how picpick does it -- one of the things that makes screenshot captor slower at doing autoscroll is that it's trying a few different methods and doing horizontal and vertical scrolling.  it's not perfect and i've been meaning to see if i can improve it in a variety of ways, i just haven't gotten around to it yet.

2. open with screenshot captor -- i think i know the problem and i'm putting it on my todo list -- if i remember correctly screenshot captor expects folder paths to be passed to it on the commandline, not filenames.  should be an easy fix.

3. you can super easily change the file format of the current image by adding the new file extension for the format you want to the file name part at the bottom left, and hitting enter.  the file will be converted to the desired format and will stay in that format.  (if you want to save a copy with a new format use the "File -> save copy as" menu command).
e.g.:
Screenshot - 9_16_2009 , 12_18_54 PM.png

4. you can change the "After Capture Show" action quickly from a right-click in the Screenshto Captor system tray icon menu.

5. you can disable the autosaving of images. you'll find it as the top checkbox on the "Saving and Loading Files" tab of options.

6. short answer is that the thumbnail panel performs horribly with so many images.  the only current fix for this is to do what i do (and what i think is the smart thing to do for a variety of reasons), which is to create subfolders in your screenshots directory and file things away so you dont have more than a hundred or so screenshots in each folder.  Screenshot captor has a ton of functions to help you auto file screenshots by date or move screenshots around, etc. to make this painless.  Personally i think its a good thing to do to keep things organized.

6. long answer is that in the last 2 weeks i've been working on a related project and finally took the time to implement the thumbnail browser i always intended for screenshot captor.  it looks nearly identical but the internals are completely different, which makes it much much more efficient at handling file system changes and updates.  i still have to test it on huge numbers of screenshots, but it should be a lot better, and i will eventually integrate this into screenshot captor.  it may solve a whole host of these thumbnail panel flickering things in SC.

well that certainly seems like a clear bug, i'll look into that as well.

i *think*, if i remember correctly, that what you are experiencing is that farr/fsscript call onprocesstrigger differently, and a minor change is needed to your code now to test if indeed it should trigger or not.  i believe this is the source of the incompatibilities which is why we need to get everyone updated.  let me talk to ecaradec and czb and see if i cant post instructions on how the change should be implemented.  it's something minor and its my fault.

unlikely.. i've been begging skwire to make screencasts of Trout and he adamantly refuses.

now it will be nice to see if crono can make a web version.. personally i think you could skip the name+share issues for the web version and just track items and expirations.

Living Room / Re: How should I diagnose this hardware issue?
« Last post by mouser on September 14, 2009, 07:33 PM »
it definitely pays to move the memory sticks around -- as memory issues can cause that kind of behavior from what i've seen.
it could also be an overheating issue.

both are hard to diagnose, but Carol's suggestions are all good, and may help you pinpoint the specific hardware causing the problem.  these kinds of unpredictable gremlins can be the most frustrating to try to solve.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2009 / Re: My assignment: The ToDo List of Doom
« Last post by mouser on September 14, 2009, 12:26 PM »
Actually I think the concepts Sarah described are ones that work for me as well -- and i recently found myself thinking to myself about the phenomena.

I can't remember when exactly it happened, since I wasn't always this way, but i have become in the last decade or so, someone who need to have things in my house very much in their proper place and organized.  I can't go long without washing dishes and straightening up.

Now what's important is that i no longer clean up because i rationally think it's a good idea, or because I can force myself to stick to a schedule of cleaning.  Instead, by whatever process, i have acquired some kind of internal cost function that will cause me discomfort if i don't do it, and give me a sense of tangible reward if i do.

It's this creation of a cost function which is so significant because it means that one no longer has to exert "will power" to force yourself to do something -- it's become something that is it's own real reward.

This suggests that rather than try to force yourself into GOOD HABITS of doing what you rationally think you should do -- one might be better off trying to construct these subconscious costs functions that regulate what actions make you feel good and bad.

And it also suggests that maybe when we find it very hard to act in the way we want to in terms of getting things done, what we may be facing is a "malfunctioning cost function."

maybe it would be nice to have an option somewhere to turn off these columns that most users of the software probably wont use (Owner and Share) and remember that if others are going to use it, they probably wont want to be distracted by such features.  just a thought.  also maybe the left hand Food Item column should auto expand its size to fit area?

how about show expiration data as # days (before or after expiration) when you get under 7 day timeframe?
and maybe show the current date in titlebar or somewhere else clear.

this might be kind of hard to do, and i'm not sure if it's worth it.. maybe the correct answer in this case is just "get used to it."  hell that's the correct answer for most problems i've found :)

Post New Requests Here / Re: Idea - Whats in my fridge?
« Last post by mouser on September 14, 2009, 12:47 AM »
i love this idea.

i'm envisioning a really simple interface with a list of items sorted with soonest-to-expire at top, with a column for the label of the item, and the expiration date on the right (maybe expressed as "# days left before expiration" or "# days past expiration" in red).

and then with ability to delete an item, or add a new item.  might be nice if new items could be selected from a list of items taken from a text data file with some preset expiration durations that could then be modified after adding.

for example, the data file might have an entry for "Eggs|6" so when you add an entry for eggs, it would suggest an expiration of 6 days forward, which user could customize at the time if there was an expiration date listed on the product itself.
