Living Room / Re: Death Threats in an Odd Turnabout

They're out to ruin people's lives, and got their own lives ruined... fair enough, even if I don't approve of death threats.

Developer's Corner / Re: [PHP] 'Dynamic variable name' ?
« Last post by f0dder on February 05, 2011, 04:30 PM »
Instead of your idea of "$map$i", you'd use multi-dimension arrays, or an array of arrays... like
Code: PHP [Select]
  1. $ubermap[i] = str_split($line);

Why not use arrays instead?

fSekrit / Re: Development: progress and thougts
« Last post by f0dder on February 05, 2011, 07:19 AM »
#1: I actually do plan on supporting fSekrit "documents" without the executable prepended - but it's not not going to be 100% anonymous, since (contrary to how e.g. TrueCrypt works) the fSekrit documents have a file header. But if you don't set up a file association, you won't get the icon and double-click behavior. It's on my ToDo list.

#2: different people are asking for different things wrt. how read-only should work. You can always manually copy the .exe file from explorer, or copy/paste text into a new document, or use the export functionality :)

fSekrit / Re: Development: progress and thougts

Alternate encryption algorithms isn't something I've planned on implementing in fSekrit, at least not before every other ToDo item has been fixed.

Why? Because I find it extremely unlikely we're going to see Rijndael broken... at least to the level where it's breakable by anybody but the largest criminal gangs or governments (tomato/tomato, I guess). And if those people are after you, they've already gut rubber hose cryptography, which breaks just about anything available today.

Alternative crypt algos will add several kilobytes to the executable, while fSekrit's primary goal after security was to keep things simple & slim. And I can't help ponder that if one of the major block ciphers was severely broken, wouldn't that mean advances in maths/quantum computing/whatever that would also deliver serious blows against the other contenders, considering they're (AFAIK) similarly structured?

This is a fine point in favor of opensourcing, btw - to let other people work on adding new algorithms ;). I'd probably accept such changes into the main distribution, if the patches allowed for easily building versions with/without the extra algorithms, so the main/baseline executable can be kept slim.

Ah, so it opens a blank fSekrit document and pastes the stuff - guess that could be useful for some people.

Developer's Corner / Re: Need Advice on MySQL Server Tuning
« Last post by f0dder on February 03, 2011, 09:42 AM »
Here's the thing... I run one of the problem child queries that I selected for testing purposes while watching Task Manager to see what impact it has on the server's resource usage. While the query is running the server is just chuffing along showing absolutely no sign of a strain.
Does "Task Manager" imply MySQL is running on a Windows server?

If that's the case, how old is the MySQL version?

Iirc, there was recently something about a new version of MySQL that fixed some Windows performance issues - I was shocked to read the announcement, since it revealed that the Win version had essentially used a "BigLock" and only in 2010 been fixed to use more fine-grained locking. In other words, for years and years and years, whoever were responsible for the Windows port should really have been shot, or at least have had a great big flogging.

Don't have a link to the article (wouldn't be surprised if it was on osdev, or perhaps slashdot), but here's a graph showing the consequences of the 5.5 release.

Is it Ok for you if I make an extension for browser so if you select text-right click-on menu click on send to fsekrit, text is coppied into your software automatically (basically, it just opens fsekrit directly from browser and copy text in it) and leave the changelog.txt out of the package (readme.txt and fsekrit.txt will still be there)?
I would prefer if you keep the changelog as well, but you're welcome to rename both readme and changelog to have a "fsekrit-*" prefix or similar :)

How do you plan on making the extension work, btw? Considering that the user has to enter his passphrase before fSekrit will accept pasted text.

  • This weekend the company announced new "Starter" editions of C++ Builder and Delphi, priced at about $200.
...or you could get the (IMHO superior) Express editions of Visual C++ and C# instead, for free. Hard decision, hard decision.

The features Eóin lists are nice and all, but .msi installers always seem so godawful slow compared to solutions - and how do you easily get files out of a .msi package without running the installer?

It looks fun, but what's the parameter used to determine when a new car is generated?

Every contraption I've seen so far seems to "survive" for a mere couple of seconds :( - IMHO the stopping parameter should be "hasn't moved for n seconds", whereas it seems to currently be pretty much random.

Where's the English -> C Gibberish button?
There's none - it parses the text to figure out what you mean (basically, engrish must start with "define" iirc - it's probably been 5-10 years since I toyed with cdecl last :))

memcached?

Open an elevated cmd.exe prompt (THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DOS!), then run cacls "with the correct arguments" to take ownership of the folder.

EDIT: And though I inferred it, just to be clear, it uses C# (or javascript) as the scripting language.
Hrm, C# for scripting?

Would that be some sucky-parsed version, or full-blown C# (and thus any .NET language) through dynamic loading of assemblies?

Actually makes sense, Joker.

A bicycle helmet can save your life.

If you crash badly enough on a motorcycle that a helmet might save your life, you'll probably end up in a wheelchair for the rest of your life - better off dead, then.

Since I'm 100% sure I want the domain before I look, I'll just load the desired domain in my browser. All I want is the .com TLD so it doesn't matter to me if other TLDs are available.
I'd definitely never use one of those "check a zillion TLDs" services, nor a "get a domain name FOR FREE" services - those are surefire ways of getting the domain squatted.
1849
The Danish registrar DK HostMaster doesn't do this, and allows you to search their domains directly.

Living Room / Re: I need advice: which laptop to buy?
« Last post by f0dder on January 22, 2011, 04:24 PM »
Most laptops will allow you to set the fan to stay on through the BIOS, if that's what you REALLY want.  I don't see why you would want the fan running when it doesn't need to be.  The power manager on Lenovo computers will allow you to set the fan to maximize performance, which is a better way to go, IMOH.
I'd rather have the fans running constantly, but at a lower rate, than having the JET EXHAUST NOISE every-so-often :)
