Living Room / Re: Please help me figure out this CD

Have you tried to copy the files over via CLI?  If so, what happens?
-Stephen66515 (June 07, 2017, 10:43 PM)

How? What files? The computer doesn't recognize the filesystem (hence the "1.1 GB Unknown"). It can't read and display to me which files are supposedly on the CD.

I know you said you don't want to enter a location, so this isn't very helpful, but just FYI:

The default clock in Android allows you to add multiple locations, and shows the current time/date at those locations.

Living Room / RESOLVED: Please help me figure out this CD
« Last post by Deozaan on June 07, 2017, 10:38 PM »
UPDATE: I've come to the conclusion that the CD is corrupt (Cyclic Redundancy Check errors), and have told the owner to try to get a new copy from the original source. Original message below.

Someone handed me a CD, telling me it contains photos of her 5-year old daughter's ballet class. She says her computer won't read it and asked if I could get the photos off of it for her.

When I put it in my computer it tries to read it for several seconds but then gives up. It doesn't show up as having anything inserted in it.  Here's the mystery: I opened up the Disk manager to see what it would reveal, and it's showing this:

Big CD.png

Media: CD-ROM Disc
Size: 1.1GB (1,073,741,312 bytes)
Volumes: 1.1 GB Unknown

The CD itself is labeled as a Philips 700 MB/80 min 52x speed CD-R. I'm sure most of those details about the CD itself are unimportant, but I included them just in case.

So... how can a 700 MB CD have a 1.1 GB partition on it? Is there any way I can salvage the data from the disc, or is it a lost cause? Any suggestions or troubleshooting steps I should take to try to get the disc to read properly?

Thanks!

So... I don't use OneLogin, as far as I'm aware. I never even heard of it before this. But maybe some sites I use use it?

Is there a list of affected sites I need to check?

Like this.

The man was ordered to give his iPhone password to police. He insists that he did. But the password he gave them doesn't work. So the judge is holding him in criminal contempt.

A Hollywood man must serve 180 days in jail for refusing to give up his iPhone password to police, a Broward judge ruled Tuesday — the latest salvo in intensifying legal battles over law-enforcement access to smart phones.

Christopher Wheeler, 41, was taken into custody in a Broward Circuit Court, insisting he had already provided the pass code to police investigating him for child abuse, although the number did not work.

“I swear, under oath, I’ve given them the password,” a distraught Wheeler, his hands handcuffed behind his back, told Circuit Judge Michael Rothschild, who earlier in May found the man guilty of contempt of court.

While the headline does sound scary, maybe it's a technicality. Maybe the case is that since he provided a password that didn't work, the judge thinks he's lying and holds him in contempt. Perhaps if he had simply refused to provide any password at all, citing the 5th amendmentw, the judge would not have held him in contempt of court.

General Software Discussion / Re: Still using Chrome? Enjoy being watched.
« Last post by Deozaan on May 31, 2017, 04:23 PM »
The article refers to it as a UX issue multiple times, but it sounds like a UI issue. Am I wrong in thinking these terms mean:

UX: User Experience (what it's like as the user to experience using the product/website)
UI: User Interface (the visual interface the user sees and interacts with)

Often times a poor UI can lead to a poor UX. So it's not to say that it's unrelated to a UX issue. But it sounds to me like it's the UI that should be displaying the red dot to let the user know they are being recorded.

Stop using Chrome. All of you. Now.

While I've become more and more wary of using Chrome and Google products as time goes by, and have been taking steps to reduce (and maybe eventually eliminate) my usage of Google products, it seems like in this case you could just not grant the permission to the site to record you in the first place.

Another reason why it's not always possible (or else it is very inconvenient) to switch away from Chrome is because some sites/services require certain Chrome extensions that are (AFAIK) only available on Chrome. Such as MetaMask.

General Software Discussion / Re: Android Question on app purchases
« Last post by Deozaan on May 30, 2017, 06:17 PM »
As I understand it, you'll have to re-purchase the apps again. Or else maybe you can still access them if you add the App Domains account to your device.

I only have experience with multiple regular accounts on a single device. I've been able to access everything having both accounts on the device, but I'm not sure if App Domain accounts would behave any differently.

I've actually wanted to migrate myself to another Google account for a few years but the fact that all my purchases are tied to the old account is the primary thing holding me back.

i'd love to see some video of the game.

We finally made a video for the game:

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: My NANY 2017 submission: EOLConverter.

Hi Dayna,

I just ran this on a directory and this time the following warning popup telling me that all files will be overwritten and that I'd better make a backup first gave me second thoughts.

EOL Converter Warning.png

I decided I'd rather not go ahead with the process so I could make sure I had a backup first. So I clicked the X in the top right corner, and EOL Converter happily continued with the process and converted all the line endings to all the files.

May I suggest that clicking the X should cancel the process so it doesn't go through with it?

General Software Discussion / Re: YNAB moving to a subscription model
« Last post by Deozaan on May 23, 2017, 12:34 PM »
I have to hand it to the folks at YNAB! They just updated the "Classic" mobile app so that it would be compatible with changes Dropbox is making to their API in June. They only committed to supporting the "legacy" version of YNAB until the end of 2016, so it's nice of them to have made this change for those of us who still aren't happy with and haven't changed over to their subscription model.

DC Gamer Club / Starpoint Gemini 2 - 48 hour giveaway on Steam
« Last post by Deozaan on May 22, 2017, 12:54 PM »
Starpoint Gemini 2 is free (to keep) for the next ~48 hours.

If you're thinking What are you guys smoking? the answer is Not a thing, amigo.. Our next game in the Starpoint series, Starpoint Gemini Warlords is coming out on May 23rd, 2017 and what better way is there to celebrate this (and to spread the word *wink* *wink*) than to offer Starpoint Gemini 2 for free?

We hope you like the game. And if you do, maybe you'd be interested in that Warlords thingie I mentioned above ;).

How are we supposed to tell whether Microsoft has fixed the vulnerability on individual computers?

The linked article says:

To check whether your Windows PC has been updated, head to "Windows Defender settings" and note the Engine version number. 1.1.13704.0 or higher means you've been patched.

DC Gamer Club / Mount & Blade - 48 hour giveaway on GOG
« Last post by Deozaan on May 19, 2017, 11:43 AM »
For the next ~44 hours from the time of this post, you can get Mount & Blade for free (and DRM free!) on GOG. And all the other Mount & Blade games are 75% off as well.

Supposedly M&B: Warband is the best of the bunch.

I've played quite a bit of M&B (the original) but haven't really played any of the expansions/sequels.

And here's a roundup of some mods for the game which should give you plenty to do:

Thanks. I already had it on Steam, and probably DRM-free on Humble, but I prefer GOG's DRM-free offering.

I wish Humble Bundle would team up with GOG to redeem DRM-free games on GOG.
1847

Dungeons 2 is free on the Humble Store for the next 2 days as part of their Spring Sale. Note that this purchase has to be redeemed to a Steam account within a couple of weeks. I don't remember the exact timeframe.

Eador: Genesis is free on GOG for the next 2 days to celebrate the launch of Gremlins, Inc from the same company.

They keep spamming this forum over and over again  We just remove the spam posts so you don't see them.

[In fairness -- the program is relevant to this discussion so it wouldn't be so bad to have one relevant post about it here with an explanation from the poster.  But they keep making multiple spam posts about the tool in various inappropriate places on the forum and that needs to stop.]

Sounds like it's time to use the banhammer. Leave the one post here if you want, but ban the spammer to prevent further spam. That's what I'd do. :)

(And IMO, a spammer doesn't deserve the benefit of leaving one post behind advertising their product or whatever they're shilling.)

Hi Antony,

Welcome to DonationCoder! Some initial feedback:

  • I'm scratching my head wondering what benefit there is to be gained having a simple encryption program be able to tell you about your system information.
  • While the interface is simple, it's a little unclear how to use it. I see two file pickers. One says "Broswe..." (note the typo!) the other says "Change..." But what do they do? What am I browsing for? What am I changing?
  • Nice logo. :)

For the benefit of other readers here, I have had the Kryptos zip file analyzed by various anti-virus software using Jotti.

Jotti reports no viruses.
